Web 2.0 technologies are changing the way we interact witheach other, and harnessing the opportunity of onlinecollaboration is the foundation of open innovation.
Technology is secondary, while collaboration is essential.
The concept of open innovationsuggests that organizations need toteam up with, customers, employeesand other organizations in developingand refining ideas, services andproducts. Most people in the fieldhave a management background, which explains why businessstrategies and organizational changeare the focal point of interest. Thisfocus has undoubtedlyadvanced ourunderstanding of innovation processes, not at least by showingits multifaceted nature. However, despite thatmost of us agree onthat technology is of importance inopen innovation practices, we stillknow very little about how varioustechnologies can be used to enableopen innovation. We believe that online collaboration isa key enabler of open innovation.Influential scholars, such as HenryChesbrough, acknowledge thattechnology is of importance in openinnovation processes. Our next step isto move from acknowledging the roleof technology towards a deeperunderstanding how onlinecollaboration can be used to enableopen innovation.Dodgson and colleagues (2006)suggest the promising concept of
innovation technology
. They focus onhow data mining, simulation, prototypingand visual presentationcan support openinnovation. While thesetechnologies are useful,we believe thatcollaboration tools, suchas online communities, wikis andother social media, have even greaterpotential in making innovation open, since ideas are generated by people, not by systems. Mining systems canbe a valuable complement to supportcreative idea generation, but are not -from our point of view - the mainenabler of innovation.

“We believe that onlinecollaboration is the key enabler of open innovation.”

We are currently in the process of reviewing all/most availabletechnological systems designed tosupport open innovation.Interestingly, we have found most of these systems to supportcollaboration. The most common wayto support collaboration is by makingit possible for users to comment anddiscuss the ideas of peers. These[technically] very simple featuresoften unleash collaborative creativityin exciting ways. Online innovationbecomes user-driven, continuous andgeographically unbound. The Internet opens up newcollaboration channels due to itsubiquitous presence and changes theboundaries of the boxes in which weare innovating. Previously we had theneed of tools to help us think “outsidethe box”, but with the access of thousands of external creative mindswe are now getting tools to helpTHEM think “inside of OUR box”.Online collaboration truly becomesthe foundation of networkedinnovation. Open innovation is notonly B2C and B2E, it is also P2P.
