 Jesus lived about 2,000 years ago in ancientPalestine when the Roman Empire was at itszenith.He was not conceived in the usual way,butwas implanted in the womb of a young womannamed Mary.God simply commanded,“Be”and hewas.In this sense,he was “a word”of God and aspecial sign for humanity.In fact,he was the last inalong line of religious guides sent to the Jews.
MARYTHEBLESSED
Mary was a righteous woman.Her mother dedi-cated her to God’s service even before she was born.As a child,she lived a life marked by healthand righteousness,which others pointed to inadmiration.She was raised by the wise Zechariah,who instilled in her,abeautiful sense of faith inGod.When she had become a young woman,Marysought to purify herself further before her Lord.Knowing that the hustle of life in the towns wasdistracting,she withdrew from her people to asanctuary in the East.There she could meditate inseclusion and peace.Suddenly,on a day thatseemed no different from the rest,an angel of Godvisited her,disguised in the likeness of a human.Afraid of so strange a sight,Maryprayed forprotection,but the strange being reassured her anddeclared that he was a messenger from the Lord toannounce the glad-tidings of a faultless son.Mary,astounded,asked how this was possible seeing thatno man had ever touched her.But the angelreplied,“Your Lord says,it is easy for Me …”.Butwhen she felt the little child within her,she fledher sanctuaryout of fear of whather familywoulddo or say when they heard the news.Mary,howev-er,was not to face hardship.When in her despairshe cried out to God for oblivion,avoice soothedher and she found shade and a cool spring.Underadate-palm in the warmth of late summer,shemade her dwelling and there bore the child unlikeany other in human history.Shortlythereafter,Mary returned to her communitycarrying the child who was to be called Messiah, Jesus,and son of Mary.When her people saw herwith the babyin her arms they couldn’t believetheir eyes,let alone accept her word.They refusedto believe when she told of an angel who came andtold her she was chosen above all other women tocarrythis burden.They accused her of infidelityand implied thatshe had ruined the family name.Mary,being overwhelmed,simply motionedtowards the child meekly.
Some people say he was a prophet,others call him a god,while others sayhe was a very wise man.But whatever your idea is,one thing remains certain:he was not your ordinary man.
