A 65-year old Brantley County man whose body was pulled from apond at the back of his property last week apparently died of naturalcauses, according to Brantley County coroner Richard Fox.Fox said Walter Allen Shellhorn, 65, just happened tobe near the edge of the pond when he died.The body was discovered lying face down inthe water, according to Brantley County Sheriff’sDepartment reports.Deputy James Mercier reported that the bodywas found by Timothy Landon Davis, 47, on thevictim’s property on Knox Road near its intersec-tion with Hightower Road.Fox also dispelled rumors that the victim’s bodywas burned or decomposed beyond recognition.“He was in a normal state with very little decomposition,” he said.

The city of Nahunta has lost aleader.Although he was born in WareCounty, Joel Chambless was asmuch a native Brantley Countianas anyone, injecting himself intothe fabric of the county — and thecity of Nahunta — in countlessways over his 49 years, most recent-ly as the owner of Joel ChamblessFuneral Home and a member of theNahunta City Council.Joel was the son of GuyChambless, who along with his wifeRuth established the Guy Chamb-less Funeral Home in Nahunta in1957 and, like other members of thefamily, grew into the family busi-ness, graduating from the Cincin-nati College of Mortuary Sciencein 1981.He was the youngest coronerever elected in the county — arecord that still stands — and heldthat post for three terms.He was a member and formerchief of the Nahunta VolunteerFire Department and a member of the Camden Masonic Lodge #391

F&AM.After the death of Guy Chambless his wife ran the familybusiness for a time then turned it over to daughter AllisonChambless, who became the sole owner in 1994, renaming thebusiness Chambless Funeral Home. She operated the funeralhome until she was diagnosed with terminal cancer in July2000.She died three months later, and long-time employeeErnest Frye and his wife Virginia took over the business,changing the name Chabless-Frye Funeral Home and laterFrye Funeral Home.Joel, unable to stay away from the funeral home businessfor very long, opened his own business in Nahunta in 2000and operated Joel Chambless Funeral Home until 2006, whenhis health began to fail.During the same time, Joel was elected to the NahuntaCity Council, which began a stormy relationship with othermembers of the council, whom he described as unable to evenfollow their own rules just before he resigned his post in pro-

Joel Chambless
Mr. Joel Miller Chambless, 49, died Sunday (June 7, 2009) at hisresidence in Nahunta after an extended illness. He was a nativeof Waycross, but he has been a lifelong resident of Nahunta. Heretired as the owner/operator of Joel Chambless Funeral Homefrom 2000-2006. In 1977, he graduated from Brantley County HighSchool and graduated from Cincinnati College of Mortuary Sciencein 1981. He served the Nahunta community as volunteer and formerchief of the Nahunta Volunteer Fire Department, and he servedthree terms as Brantley County Coroner being the youngest coronerever elected to office in Brantley County history. He was also amember of Camden Masonic Lodge #391 F&AM and was affiliatedwith the Baptist faith. He is the son of the late Guy Chambless, Jr.and Myrtle Ruth McCurdy Chambless. He is also preceded in deathby his sister, Allison; and brother, Guy Chambless III. Survivorsinclude his wife, Teresa Rhoden Chambless of Nahunta; threedaughters, Megan Boyett (husband Brent) of Waycross, MirandaLaRoche (husband Jamie Kicklighter) of Waynesville, and JenniferBalze (husband James) of Nahunta; four sons, Derek Chambless(wife Brittany) of Brunswick, Steven Chambless of Nahunta, TylerChambless of Nahunta, Matthew Chambless (wife Shannon) of Ft.Hood, TX; nine grandchildren, Zack, Hailey, Kaylie, Carrie, Peyton,Emma, Brady, Emily and Brooklyn; three sisters, Susan Hickox of Nahunta, Kay Hickox of Nahunta, and Marilyn Guerry (husbandLee) of Cordele; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives. Afuneral service was held at11 a.m. Tuesday (June 9, 2009) at FirstBaptist Church Nahunta. Burial followed in New Hope Cemetery.Memorial contributions can be made to Nahunta Volunteer FireDepartment, Neighbors helping Neighbors or Southeast CancerUnit. Walter Allen Shellhouse, 65, of Nahunta died suddenly at hisresidence Wednesday (June 3, 2009). Born in Randolph Co, hisparents were Luther and Mamie Lee Carswell Shellhouse. He is alsopreceded in death by his brother, Richard Shellhouse. He workedin Pulpwood as a logger. He loved fishing, horseback riding, takingcare of the birds and was a outdoors sportsman. He was of theBaptist Faith. He is survived by 2 sisters and a brother-in-law, JeanWoodham of Alabama and Betty and Sam McGarrity of Nahunta;a brother and sister-in-law, Tony and Donna Shellhouse of Blakely;several nieces, nephews and other relatives. Memorialization willbe by cremation.

Representatives from Waycross College(WC), Albany State University (ASU), localand state government, along with locallaw enforcement gathered on the WaycrossCollege campus recently to celebrate WC-ASU Partnership Day. The event providedthe opportunity for those in attendance tolearn more about the bachelor's degree incriminal justice being offered through ASUon the Waycross College campus.Joyce Archie-Williams, liaison/instructor for the ASU Criminal Justiceprogram, said she was pleased with theoverall event and excited about the supportfor the program from government and lawenforcement officials."This was a good day," said Archie-Williams. "A partnership like this needsa lot of community support and thatwas evidenced by those who came toPartnership Day. The 2009 nominees were D. L. Brannen explained that each yearOTC nominates at least one manufacturerfrom each of the six counties in its servicedelivery area as a candidate for the GeorgiaManufacturer of the Year award. In orderto be considered for the award, nominatedmanufacturers must complete and submitan application to the state office.Varn Wood Products was recognizedwith a certificate of appreciation.

State Troopers from theWaycross Post of the GeorgiaState Patrol investigatedseven traffic crashes duringthe month of May in BrantleyCounty. Sergeant First ClassJackson said the trafficcrashes resulted in fourinjuries and no traffic deaths.SFC Jackson saidtroopers from Post 22 alsoissued 138 traffic citationsin the county during themonth. The total includesfive arrests for driving underthe influence, 52 citationsfor speeding, 14 seat beltviolations, and three childrestraint violations. Troopersalso issued 102 warnings.
