Offshore wind is an emerging industry, which mainly has tasted success inEurope. Further, with land acquisition and environmental clearances issuesonshore, offshore wind farms are fast emerging as preferred choice fordevelopers globally. Offshore wind development started in early 1990s.Since then, the sector has grown significantly with total installed capacityreaching 5410 MW as on January 2013. European Union is the leader inoffshore development with installed capacity of 4995 MW. Further, anadditional 3300 MW of capacity is under construction, scheduled to becommissioned by 2014.The offshore wind farms generates more energy than the onshore farms asthe wind that blows over the ocean are much more stronger and haveconsistent wind velocity. As a result offshore wind farms at times do reachcapacity factor of up to 50%. Further the unit sizes of turbines are muchhigher in offshore, resulting in high capacity installations and maximumutilisation of resources.
