Action of Meds.
Prevents bacterial cell wall synthesis during replication. Bactericidal.

Adverse Effect
Dizziness, fatigue, insomnia, reversible hyperacidity, urticaria, maculopapular to exfoliative dermatitis, vesicular eruptions, erythema multiforme, skin rashes, itchy eyes, glossitis, stomatitis, sore or dry mouth or tongue, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain or cramps, epigastric distress, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, rectal bleeding, proteinuria, hematuria, hyaline casts, platelets, basophils, cholestatic jaundice,total proteins and uric acid, hyperthermia.

Contraindicat ion Hypersensitivit y to penicillins, cepfalosporins or imipenem. Not used to treat severe pneumonia, empyema, bacteremia, pericarditis, meningitis and purulent or septic arthritis during acute stage.

Nursing Responsibilitie s -Obtain patients history of allergy. -Assess patient for signs and symptoms of infecton, wound characteristics, sputum, urine stool, fever, WBC count. -Assess patient for previous sensitivity reaction to penicillin or other cephalosporins. -Obtain C & S before beginning drug therapy for assessment. -Assess bowel patterns: bloody diarrhea, cramping, possible pseudomembra nous colitis. -Monitor for bleeding:ecchy mosis bleeding gums, hematuria, stool guaiac daily if on long term therapy.

Drug to Drug interaction Contraceptives , oral: may reduce efficacy of oral contraceptives. Tetracyclines: may impair bactericidal effects of amoxicillin.
