To make a selection within aselection, hold down the optionkey while dragging. With theobject selected, hold down thecommand key or select themove tool and click inside theselection and drag and drop theimage onto another file.

Throughout thisdocument, “Command/ Ctrl” means Commandon the Macintosh andCtrl on Windows.

Three New Features Overview

Open an image in AdobePhotoshop that has an object toselect. From the Tool paletteselect the magnetic lasso tool,found under the lasso tool.Click once and begin draggingnear the object; the magneticlasso tool will distinguish theedges for you. To finish off theselection, place the tool over thestarting point and click. Yourselection is made.

Double-click on themagnetic lasso in thetool box to access itsoptions.• Lasso width is thedistance from thepointer at which thelasso will detect edges.• Frequency is the rateat which the lasso setsfastening points (ahigher value anchorsmore quickly).• Edge Contrast is thelasso’s sensitivity toedges (a higher valuedetects high contrastedges).

The image is placed on a newlayer and can now be scaled androtated using Free Transform(Command/Ctrl+T). Once theimage is placed as you wouldlike, press the Return/Enter keyto set the transformation.

Next, let’s add text to theimage. Select the type tool andclick approximately where thetext should be placed. Move thedialog box so you can make useof the new Preview option.Notice that you can now high-light part of your text and applymultiple styles and sizes as wellas control the leading. You alsohave the ability to change thecolor of the text while in thedialog box. Click OK once yourtext is as you would like it.

You can add some new layereffects with the text layer stillselected. Here we are going toadd the Bevel and Embosseffect. I’ve used an Inner Beveland then tried different modeand opacity settings to achievethe effect I like. I even specifiedthe shadow color by clicking onthe color box.

Transformation

Yet another newfeature in version5.0 is the ability totransform selectionsfound on the Select >Transform Selectionmenu. This allows youto transform a selec-tion only and not theimage underneath.

Moving type

While in the Type Tooldialog, you can nowclick outside the dialogand move our typeinto position–just onemore feature thatmakes working withtype in Photoshop 5.0that much easier.
