Midnight Whispers

Deep in the night my body craves quieting,
not of the surrounding sounds,
whisper of the fan,
breathless whir of the tube,
but aches the stillness others find,
when the muscles all relax at once,
and their body unfolds between the muslin,
sweet smell of fresh linens,
hugging up the pillow,
trotting off to neverland.

I run the disquieting gauntlet,
wherein my striated tendons alight,
electrical charges transmitted from the brain,
or echoed off unheralded light posts,
that keep the spasmous cramps rolling,
glutes, calves, forearms, too weak to roll over,
or pull the covers past my face,
cannot lift a water glass,
I’ve begun to eschew my meals,
preferring gauntness,
to immobility,
hoping if I get low enough,
my body will cease,
the rolling lightning strikes,
that make the bed tremor when I wake,
or buzz me like a cell phone,
strapped inside my ribs.

Will anyone answer the midnight whispers,
of the pleas inside my dreams,
where I kick the covers to the ceiling,
when my left leg feels the jolt,
or the dream where,
I’m laying in the middle of a busy road,
sitting up just in time to be hit in the chest,
by a speeding car,
knees recoil to my chin,
the guttural umph as the vehicle carries onward,
and my eyes search the darkness,
wanting meaning,
realizing my body was setting up a logical reason,
my mind could grasp,
for the muscle shock it was getting ready to give me,
or the missive a fortnight hence,
when I was wrapped in a blanket,
and thrown into the trunk of a sedan,
ala mafia burial,
only to be instantly sliced in half,
the long way,
by an unseen machine,
again the ‘lectrics went to work on me,
I screamed into the nighttime air,
nothing more,
before I died, than a
midnight whisper.

My rational self needs an irrational explanation within a dream context to understand the lightening strike it is about to deliver to my muscles while I sleep.
