Welcome to our beautiful city and to thetenth edition of the second season of“The Sibenik Times”. When will Croatiafinally enter the European Union? Andcome to think of it do we really wantto be a part of the union? There aremixed feelings coming from the pressand the public in general about actu-ally joining. It’s probably a question of“better the devil you know” syndrome. My own opinion is that we do needto enter, but not at any cost. Enteringinto the elite group would offer Croatiamore pluses than negatives, not only infinancial terms but also in human terms. The right to be able to work and travelfreely in other member states couldbe a double edged sword but netherthe less a sword that is needed, if onlyto make the whole country more com-petitive. The ease of being able to usethe Euro as our official currency wouldimmediately bring bonuses. This yearhas seen Croatia become a full mem-ber of NATO and although there weresome negative reactions to this I believethat in the long run it’s a positive step. Ilook at entry into NATO as an insurancepolicy for the country, sure we’ll have topay around 3 million Euros a year, butthat’s a small price to pay for security. So joining the EU would also cost thecountry, but the benefits far outweighthe costs. As we depend on tourism forthe growth of our economy and as thecast majority of our guests come fromEuropean Union countries you don’thave to be Einstein to see the advan-tages. Anyway, at the end of the day,it’s only a matter of time before we doenter this European club. And it’s muchbetter to be inside rather than standingoutside and looking though the window,of what is a huge window of opportunityfor Croatia. Latest rumours, if we are tobelieve them, say that by 2012 we’llbe finally inside. That day for me can’tcome soon enough.

An analysis of the water in the Adriatic Sea off the coast of Croatia has shown that it is generally of very-high quality. The analysis at a number of points off the coast found the water to be of thehighest quality at 1,144 locations, of good quali-ty at 16 locations and of quality deemed suitablefor swimming at nine locations, according to theofficial website of the ministry of environmentalprotection (http://www.mzopu.hr). The analysestook place from the 1st to the 26th of May at 904locations and from the 25th to the 29th of May at265 locations. Analysis of the quality of sea waterhas traditionally been performed at 15-day inter- vals from the beginning of May until the end of September.Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader is makingan official visit to the USA where he has met withEU Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn and USUN Ambassador Susan Rice. Sanader and Rehnreportedly agreed Croatia and Slovenia wouldfind a way to resolve their border dispute bloc-king Croatia’s EU accession negotiations, Croatiannational television (HRT) has reported. The twomen said the negotiations might end this year. Ri-ce said Croatia and the USA had been cooperatingin exemplary fashion in the UN Security Coun-cil. Rice added the US government appreciatedits partnership with Croatia in NATO and the UNand expected bilateral relations would continueto intensify. Sanader will also meet with UN Se-cretary-General Ban Ki-moon.Croats have come up with some new jobs thatmay help them survive the recession. One of themis the job of a “nightlife guide.” There are two kindsof such jobs. The first is that of guides to eveningparties, and the second is that of guides dressedin historic costumes who take tourists around acity and relate its history. It is hoped such jobs willhelp reduce unemployment and increase tourismrevenue. The daily Vecernji list has reported Cro-ats in such jobs cannot count on a steady income, only on the generosity of their customers, oftenmeaning how much they are willing to pay for agood party. Other new, unusual jobs in Croatiainclude those of trampoline coaches and foundersof pet-only airlines.Croatian football star andKarlsruhe player Dino Drpic’s wife Nives Celsius has been voted the world's 15th-sexiest woman by German FHM (ForHim Magazine) readers. Thefavourite men's magazine ratesCelsius, 27, as one of the world’s100 sexiest women. Celsius leftother beauties such as AliciaKeys, Rihanna and Gisela Bun-dchen in the dust. First on thelist is 19- year old singer Mandy Capristo. Celsius is very pleased with her rating, especially sinceit comes from German readers, according to the daily Jutarnjilist. For Celsius, it is proof shehas been noticed by the Ger-man public. Celsius is planningto make use of her celebrity sta-tus. The first foreigner to write acolumn for German tabloid Bild,Celsius wants to record a songin English. According to Celsius'manager Kristijan Lopac, she isnegotiating a deal with one of the most-popular German pro-ducers. Austrian MEP Hannes Swoboda, theEuropean Parliament (EP)’s Rapporteuron Croatia, believes Croatia will enter theEU no earlier than in 2012. Swoboda saidin an interview in last week’s edition of the Vienna newspaper Die Presse: “If Croatiaresolves its border dispute with Slovenia,it can enter the EU no earlier than in 2012.That is because we will be able to end ne-gotiations with Croatia only in 2010, and we will then need to start a ratificationprocess for which we will need arounda year and a half,” Swoboda added. The Austrian MEP said he had once been moreoptimistic about Croatia’s earlier accessi-on. Swoboda also said Croatia’s accessionto the European Union entrance shouldnot mark the end of EU enlargement.

Four Croatian food products have won Su-perior Taste Awards 2009. The products arePodravka's Plum Jam and its Sardines in OliveOil, Sirena - Mala Sirana’ Pag cheese and Zagre-backa pivovara’s (Zagreb Brewery) Ozujsko beer. The Superior Taste Award is a symbol of excellen-ce that is awarded by the International Taste &Quality Institute in Brussels - the leading worldorganization for the evaluation of the quality of food products. The award ceremony was held atthe end of last week in Brussels. The competitionfeatured 796 products from 58 countries, of which525 won awards. A British historian is claiming King Arthur wasburied in Croatia. Historian John Matthews hastold the Croatian daily newspaper Jutarnji List hebelieves the gravestone found in the southern Cro-atian village of Podstrana is really King Arthur’s."If proven true, this theory will cause huge dis-content in the UK. When we were working onJerry Bruckheimer's movie about King Arthur, many Brits called me a thief. They accused me of trying to steal King Arthur from the UK. There isno doubt it would be useful to do proper archa-eological research in Croatia's southern provinceof Dalmatia. Who knows what we would find,"Matthews has said."Mother Teaching her Child to Pray" by Croati-an sculptor Ivan Mestrovic (1883-1962) has beensold for 99,650 GBP at a Sotheby's art auction. The auction in the category 19th and 20th Cen-tury European Sculpture occurred last week inLondon. The sculpture is emblematic of a centraltheme in Mestrovic's art, motherhood as a sublimemission. The woman's features recall those of thesculptor's second wife Olga, with whom he hadfour children. Mestrovic's first visit to the UnitedStates took place in 1924, when he exhibited at theBrooklyn Museum of Art. His "Mother TeachingHer Child to Pray" was modelled there in 1925.The bronze sculpture was purchased by Lady Cowdray in 1930 or 1931. After her death, hergranddaughter Joan Acton took possession of it.Slovenians holidaying away fromtheir home country last year were mostlikely to choose Croatia as a travel de-stination, official figures have revealed. According to the Survey on TourismTravels of Domestic Population by theStatistical Office of the Republic of Slo- venia, 57 per cent of those who had afour-night-or-longer trip outside of Slo- venia went to stay in Croatian accom-modation. This was some way ahead of the other most popular countries for aholiday, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Italy, which each attracted seven per cent of the holidaying Slovenians. Six per cent visited Austria and four per cent headedto Germany, while Greece and Serbiaattracted some tourists. Last month, the Austrian Times said that many Austri-ans enjoy taking a vacation in Croatia. The newspaper stated that Croatia wasone of the “favourite summer holiday destinations” for people from the centralEuropean nation
