Elite Triathletes in Town for DC Leg of Dextro Energy Triathlon -- ITU World Championship Series

Four of North America’s top elite triathletes, in Washington,DC to race in the Dextro Energy Triathlon -- ITU World Championship Series, will take part inan event on
Friday, June 19 from 10:00am – 11:00am at Turkey Thicket Recreation Center(1100 Michigan Avenue, NE)
with Mayor Adrian Fenty and youth from ACHIEVE Kids Tri,Inc. and Arlington Triathlon Club’s programs.Simon Whitfield from Canada, and Sarah Haskins, Matt Reed and Jarrod Shoemaker from the United States will join Washington, DC Mayor Adrian Fenty, DC’s Department of Parksand Recreation (DPR) Director Ximena Hartsock, International Triathlon Union (ITU) and USATriathlon (USAT) officials to work with youth groups who participate in summer triathlontraining programs for a work out and triathlon training demonstration.Washington, DC is the only North American stop in an eight-city Dextro EnergyTriathlon -- ITU World Championship Series. The winners will share a prize purse of $150,000and the opportunity to become world champion at the series finale in Gold Coast, Australia. The65 elite men and 65 elite women triathletes will compete in an Olympic distance race on Sunday,June 21, 2009 that includes a 1.5k swim in the Potomac and 40k bike and 10k run that windsthrough Washington, DC’s monumental corridor. The race, which will be broadcast live in someregions via Universal Sports, is expected to attract a global audience.Also on June 21st, USA Triathlon (USAT)-sanctioned age group non-draftingcompetitions will take place, featuring an Olympic distance race (1.5k swim, 40k bike, 10k run)and a shorter, Sprint distance race (750m swim, 20k bike, 5k run). The age group competitorswill finish in the same finish arena as the elites.The young people participating are part of the Arlington Triathlon Club’s summer programs and ACHIEVE Kids Tri, Inc., a Washington, DC based 501(c)(3) organization thatdesigns and implements youth-based triathlon training and fitness programs in Washington, DCand Houston, TX. The ACHIEVE program, developed in partnership with the DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR), takes kids through a 6-week instruction and training program, provided free of charge, insured and monitored by experienced and trained coaches. The 2009ACHIEVE summer camp will take place June 15-July 24 at three sites in Washington, DC:Turkey Thicket Recreation Center, Kenilworth Parkside Recreation Center, and Benning Park Community Center. The program runs Monday through Friday from 9:00 am – 12:30 pm. Onthe final day of camp, July 24th, kids will compete in a USAT-sanctioned triathlon
