A HISTORY OF THE RELIGIO OF JUDAISM500 TO 200 B.C.BY ARCHIBALD DUFF, LL.D., D.D.EMERITUS PROFESSOR OF OLD TESTAMET THEOLOGYI THE YORKSHIRE UITED COLLEGE, BRADFORDLODOJAMES CLARKE & CO., LIMITED9, ESSEX STREET, STRAD, W.C.2Made in Great BritainDEDICATED TOMY WIFEMY DEVOTED HELPER Sine qua nonPREFACEI UDERTAKE this task, too large I fear for mypower, for several reasons. First, after fifty yearsof strenuous toil in Montreal and in Bradford, inteaching to many what the Old Testament is,I feel that it would be wrong to throw away unusedthe mass of lectures I prepared for my classes bya great deal of busy search ; so I publish some of

my results now.Secondly, I am eager to see the Old Testamentused. To say that actually it is almost unused isno exaggeration. I know this disuse is caused bymistaken theories and methods. Only the historicaland critical method can bring men to use it ; forit is a work of men, and only the Divinely humanestimate of it and use of it will induce men toknow it and to love it. Many ministers are afraidto use it : afraid of its difficulties, afraid of " funda-mentalism." Let us play the man. Some unwiseminister wished publicly a few days ago that thisgreat Literature might be destroyed, buried in theocean ! That wish cannot be fulfilled, else JESUSwould be destroyed ; for that Literature is partof Him. When the wonderful beauty and genuinehumanity of its writers are seen, then its romancewill win everybody. Since JESUS was the Childof the Jewish People, therefore we cannot knowHim really until we know the Old Testament.Thirdly, I am deeply convinced that so-calledChristianity has done untold injury to the Jews. Our dense ignorance of their pre-Christian storyA History of The Religion of Judaismis to be blamed. When we come to see their deepspirituality in the ages when they were producingJESUS let us say, when GOD was producing Himby their lives when we see the PSALMS, ISAIAH,the whole, as it poured from Jewish hearts, thenwe shall prize this Literature. Finally, I am sure that only such knowledge of JESUS will save our Churches from their presentsad helplessness.

I owe unmeasured thankfulness to many. Pro-fessor Duhm of Basel University has been for longyears my inspiration and my leader. Of my othernoble teachers I must mention with glad gratitudeEduard Riehm, Paul de Lagarde, Julius Wellhausen,T. K. Cheyne, W. Robertson Smith, B. W. Bacon. These have been verily prophets of GOD for me.My students of the past half-century have allcheered me on. Of these especially, the Rev. G.Stanley Russell, M.A., of Clapham, has revised andrewritten many a page for me ; while the saintedDr. J. H. Jowett was Russell's counsellor in suchrewritings, as well as he was my strength by manya eracious word to me.A.D.8COTETSCHAPTER PACK PREFACE 7SECTIO ITHE BASIS OF JUDAISMI.
