2009 District of Columbia Family Education Expo

Call for Presenters
OverviewThe DC Family Education Partnership, a collaborative of local and stateeducation agencies, will host the 2009 DC Family Education Expo for familiesand caregivers in the District of Columbia. The Expo is a community event,where families will gain valuable information about education and educationalprograms for students of all ages.InvitationWe invite presenters to submit a proposal to present a workshop or discussion atthe Expo to be held on September 12, 2009, at Bell Multicultural High School. Thetheme for the Family Education Expo is “
Education Excellence: All Students. AllParents. All Families.”
We are searching for education and community basedpresenters who represent diverse backgrounds, roles, responsibilities, andexperiences in serving children, adults and families.All presentations will be
60 minutes
. Submission of a proposal is not a guaranteeor acceptance that your presentation will be included in the final Expoprogram.A review committee comprised of community stakeholders including programstaff and community members will assess each proposal. Consideration will begiven to such factors as program balance and space availability.We encourage presenters to use technology to engage participants.AudienceWe anticipate over 750 attendees from across the city. Parents, students,educators, early childhood specialists, universities, health care practitioners,advocates, and others will gather at this conference to learn and shareinformation about how their work and effort has impacted and continues toinfluence education in the District of Columbia.Presenter BenefitsEach presenter will receive a table in the exhibition hall for their organizationand recognition in the program book. We encourage presenters to waive their fees as an in-kind donation.

Presentation Content Areas
Please consider the following criteria when developing your proposal:
All presentations will respond to best practices, effective strategies, successfulprogram models, or research in the following content areas:
1.
 
College & Workforce Readiness
The College & Workforce Readiness content area will give parents andcaregivers useful information, tools and resources to support postsecondaryeducation for their children and themselves. Learn about college selection,college prep and financial aid to pay for college and training after the highschool age.

Education & Youth: Taking Charge in the Hall, Classroom and Dorm
This youth-specific strand will focus on the attitudes, strategies and behaviorsyouth need to take charge of their education, college success and lifegoals. Students will get advice from peers who have met challenges andwho are pushing themselves to get the best education they (and you!)deserve.

Special Populations
The special populations strand will address the issues that impact theeducation of students with unique challenges, i.e. students withexceptionalities (both academically gifted and those with disabilities),transient domiciles (“homeless”), returning from foster care and those re-entering the community from juvenile justice system.

Parent and Child Together
The Parent and Child Together content area will provide an opportunity withparents whose children are too young or who prefer not to stay in theChildren’s Pavilion sessions they can attend together. Sessions will modelworking with your child and teaching in fun ways everyday.Concurrent SessionsEach concurrent session will last for one hour (60 minutes) in length and willaccommodate 25-30 individuals. Each content area will have at least onesession with an advocacy component and a technology component.All presenters will be responsible for the duplication of the session’s handoutsand materials. Information about estimated attendance will be provided to thepresenters closer to the date of the expo.

Presentation Formats:
(1) Q and A Discussion:
A discussion-based session could be used by presenterswith a strong background on the topic and knowledge of adult learningprinciples. Presenters are expected to involve participants throughout thediscussion. Topics that have no easy answers or challenge us to think outsidethe box are excellent for this type of session.
(2) Educational Presentation:
Presenters share lessons learned from bestpractices, innovative activities, research studies, or personal experience.Presentations should focus on practical, useful information or perspectives,which the participants can apply to their respective situations.
(3) Panel Discussion:
This is a discussion by experts with different experiences ona related topic. This format will be determined by the Expo program committee.You will be notified in advance of the decision.
(4) Workshop:
This session is well suited to the presentation of training materials.The workshop format will involve participants in group work, hands-ontechnology and other engaging activities. This is not a “sit and get” session.
Please keep in mind:

The presentation, discussion or workshop should appeal to a diverseaudience, including, but not limited to: age, profession, educationalattainment, experience, and knowledge of the subject.2.
 
The presentation, discussion or workshop should be no more than 1 hour inlength.3.
 
The presentation, discussion or workshop should be limited to a maximumof 3 presenters.4.
 
The presentation or workshop should be innovative, interactive, andengaging.5.
 
The presentation, discussion or workshop should not be used to advancea particular program or product.6.
 
The presenter(s) should provide resources such as bibliographies, articles,and other handouts aside from presentation notes.
