Brown trout is native to Europe and westernAsia and was frst introduced to Australia in1864. Fisheries agencies in the Basin havesubstantial stocking programs or this andother trout species. Vic and NSW fsheriesagencies release approximately fve millionsalmonids each year; and private hatcheriesalso make releases. Brown trout is widelydistributed in the cooler upland streams oVic, NSW and the ACT, as well as a smallnumber o streams in SA. It is not present inQld. There is a tendency or Brown trout tobecome the dominant species in lakes anddams where both Rainbow and Brown troutare present.
