New York’s
Top Twenty
Downtown
Poets
By Stephen Wolf

T
he top twenty of anything is subjective unless
numbers are determinates: the best batting
averages or tallest buildings. But irrefutable
facts aside, each of us with a love and some knowledge
of poetry will conceive a list bearing many of these
same poets listed here; the hard part is listing only
twenty. For nowhere in New York has poetry flourished
the way it has downtown, in part because that is where
the city began nearly four centuries ago, but more
significantly because poets have always sought haven
and camaraderie, cafes and bookshops in the streets
below Fourteenth, east side and west side, often settling
in those neighborhoods because other poets have settled
there before them. Each poet listed here has had a distinct
and intimate relationship with the city –sometimes with
love, sometimes hate, and occasionally with both in the
same poem, a tradition that continues to this day, and
they have left enduring imprints on the city by writing
of the city’s enduring imprint left on them.

This list was created by Stephen Wolf, editor of I Speak

of the City: Poems of New York (Columbia University Press),
the most extensive collection of poems ever assembled about
New York City. Beginning with an early piece when the city
was called New Amsterdam and continuing through poems
written after 9/11, the collection features poets from more than
a dozen countries and captures New York’s defining moments
and infinite transformations: Henry Hudson’s arrival, Peter
Stuyvesant’s prejudice, the city’s astonishing growth and
gentrification, the thrills of a skyscraper’s observation deck,
the privations of teeming tenements, the immigrant experience
at Ellis Island, decay, fear, unexpected kindness on a subway
ride, on sidewalks, in taxis, and poems about Central Park.
Whether writing sonnets, epics, experimental or imagistic
verse, each of these poets has been inspired by the marvels and
madness, humor and heartbreak of New York.

Edna St. Vincent Millay (1892-1950)

S
ettling in Greenwich Village in 1917 after
graduating from Vassar, Edna St. Vincent
Millay was the quintessential new woman –bold,
audacious, sexually liberated and often preferring to be
called Vincent (her middle name chosen by her father
to honor the Greenwich Village hospital that saved his
brother’s life). She lived poor but happy at 139 Waverly
Place, then 25 Charleton Street, and finally 75 ½
Bedford Street. She acted, directed, and wrote for the
Provincetown Players, and her poem “First Fig” (“my
candle burns at both ends, it will not last the night;/
But ah, my foes, and oh, my friends—/ It gives a lovely
light!”) became the motto of her restless generation.
Often written in traditional forms despite her own
unconventional life-style, her poems expressed sexual
pleasure and erotic delight (“What lips my lips have
kissed and where and why I have forgot…”), and in 1923
she was the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for
Poetry. “How sweet the sound in the city an hour before
sunrise,” she wrote in “English Sparrows (Washington
Square)”,/ “When the park is empty and grey and the
light clear and so lovely…”

generation of New York School inspired collections, offering new
poets, Ted Berrigan used specific angles and takes on the classic
time and place in his poetry, form. He lived at 101 St. Mark’s

E. E. Cummings (1894-1962)
R
esiding at 21 East 15th before
serving in France as an ambulance
driver during The First World
War (his experiences as a prisoner told
in his novel The Enormous Room), E. E.
Cummings remained in Paris after the war
as part of the expatriates misnamed ‘the
Lost Generation’ by Gertrude Stein. Upon
returning to the city he settled in Greenwich
Village, moving in 1923 to his much-loved
4 Patchin Place off W. 10th Street and
Sixth Avenue. One of the 20th Century’s
most innovative and experimental poets
yet capable of reaching many readers, his
work is romantic, satiric, angry, bawdy,
and written in his characteristic style of
oddities of punctuation, capitalization, and
inventivenesswithtypographyandlanguage.
While not considered a poet writing of
New York, the city appears throughout his
work in juxtaposed and dream-like ways:
“at the ferocious phenomenon of 5 o’clock
i find myself gently decompos-/ ing in the
mouth of New York… In the soft midst
of the tongue sits the Woolworth building
a serene/ pastille-shaped insipid kinesis
or frail swooping lozenge…” In another
poem, while lying in his bed, “my eyes are
fond of the east side/ as i lie asleep my eyes
go into Allen street the dark/ long cool
tunnel of raving colour….”

and currently a professor of languages and of things we know for sure,/ Followed by
literature at Bard College, Ashbery wrote art musical evenings.”

Marianne Moore (1887-1972)

I
n 1918 Marianne Moore took a Greenwich Village apartment
at 14 St. Luke’s Place and from 1921 until 1925 worked at the
Hudson Park branch of the New York Public Library right across
the street. Although she would later move to Brooklyn and have a
special fondness for the Brooklyn Dodgers (in 1968 she threw out the
first ball on opening day at Yankee Stadium), she became one of the
central poets in Greenwich Village after World War I, publishing in
and later editing Dial, perhaps the most important journal of the arts
in its day, its office at 152 West 13th Street. Her Collected Poems (1951)
won the Pulitzer Prize, and The Poems of Marianne Moore was edited
by Greenwich Village’s treasured poet and teacher Grace Schulman.
When crossing into Manhattan from Brooklyn Moore always took the
Manhattan Bridge so as to get a better view of the Brooklyn Bridge,
“synonymous with endurance,” she wrote, “united by stress….”

30 COMMUNITY HANDBOOK 2008

Jack Kerouac (1922-1969)

K
nown less for his poetry than
his novels On the Road (first
draft written at 149 W. 20th
Street) and The Subterraneans (set in San
Francisco but describing the jazz clubs
of New York and the ‘Paradise Alley’
neighborhood of East 11th Street),
Jack Kerouac influenced a generation
as much by his life-style as he did with
his writing. Born in Massachusetts
and attending Columbia on a football
scholarship where he befriended Allen
Ginsberg and William Burroughs,
Kerouac along with poet John Clellon
Holmes was instrumental in the
emergence of the Beat Generation
which gave a voice and identity to the
outcasts, disaffected, independent, and
self-reliant of his age. As popular to his
generation as Scott Fitzgerald was to the
youth of the 1920s, Kerouac also wrote
poetry, his Mexico City Blues (published in
1959) and his posthumous Scattered Poems
demonstrating a variety of styles from
the freest of free verse to the structured
sonnets and haikus but infused with
what Ginsberg called a “spontaneous
bop” inspired by jazz. In his poem
“Macdougal Street Blues,” Kerouac
writes of “The goofy foolish/ human
parade/ Passing on Sunday/ art streets/
Of Greenwich Village…”

Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849)

A
lthough born in Boston, Edgar Allan Poe made
a permanent place— or rather several— for
himself in our city. He moved here with his young
bride (and cousin) Virginia Clemm in 1844, residing first
at 130 Greenwich Street, then a dismal back room at 195
East Broadway the next year. In time the couple moved
to 85 Amity (now W. 3rd Street) where Poe began “The
Cask of Amontillado” and published “The Raven.” Apart
from inventing the detective story, writing immortal tales
of horror and the supernatural, and a renowned poet
whose work influenced Stéphane Mallarmé and Charles
Baudelaire, Poe worked at the New York Evening Mirror and
edited the Broadway Journal. Eventually Virginia’s fragile
condition (she was suffering from tuberculosis) led Poe
to move them to the Brennan Farm near Broadway and
West 84th Street, then finally the Fordham cottage in the
Bronx. Although having never written a poem about New
York, he declared in Doings of Gotham that “roaming far
and wide over this island of Mannahatta...to me it conveys
the sublime.”

C.O. BIGELOW’S
Nation’s Oldest Pharmacy Delivers Modern Health Care

For more than 150 years Bigelow’s, the nation’s oldest pharmacy, has been deliv-
ering the highest quality pharmaceutical and medical equipment and supplies.
The pharmacy (located at 414 6th Ave.) has been a Greenwich Village staple so
long that Mark Twain can be found in its records.

Leader in Pharmaceutical Products

Today Bigelow’s is in the forefront of medical care filling prescriptions 365 days
a year. Six registered pharmacists are on hand to answer questions and fill patients’
needs. Bigelow’s stocks one of the widest range of pharmaceutical products including
the most unusual and some still-effective formulas that are no longer generally avail-
able. Bigelow’s even makes special liquid compounds of prescription medications for
patients who have a difficult time swallowing pills. Bigelow’s is an established leader
in homeopathy — or “natural healing.” Bigelow’s stocks one of the largest inventories
of self-treatment remedies as these remedies surge in popularity and being accepted by
physicians. A comprehensive catalog of hundreds of homeopathic remedies is avail-
able from Bigelow’s.

Surgical and Home Care Products

Bigelow’s offers a complete department of products for physicians and their patients.
The pharmacy is headquarters for diabetic blood monitors and supplies and offers free
demonstrations and consultation with patients. Bigelow has a complete home care
department including ostomy supplies, surgical walkers, commodes, appliances and
durable medical equipment.
Bigelow’s circa 1895

Edward Field (b. 1924)

N
ew York is “a people paradise,” wrote Brooklyn-born Edward
Field, where “the big event here/ is the streets, which are full of
love.” Since the 1963 publication of Stand Up, Friend, With Me, the
poet has also written novels (The Villagers: A Novel of Greenwich Village), edited
the poetry anthology A Geography of Poets, written a memoir of Greenwich
Village bohemia (The Man Who Would Marry Susan Sontag), and most recently
After the Fall, a collection of both old and new poems including the haunting,
epic title-piece of more than 200 lines telling of our city’s great loss. Infused
with strong political fire as well as the broad concerns of the common
man, his work is topical and timeless, particular and universal, written in a
natural, accessible voice filled with anger, heart-ache, humor, and humanity.
In the tender, wise, self-effacing poem “The Last Bohemians,” he writes,
“Leftovers from the old Village, we spot each other/ drifting through the
ghostly/ high-rental picturesque streets, ears echoing/ with typewriters
clacking and scales and arpeggios/ heard no more…”

Richard Howard (b.1929)

“N
ot hell but a street,” Richard Howard wrote
in his poem “209 Canal.” “not/ Death
but a fruit-stand, not/ Devils just hungry
devils/ Simply standing around the stoops, the stoops.”
Born in Cleveland in 1929, winner of the 1970 Pulitzer
Prize for poetry for Untitled Subjects, Poet Laureate of New
York State from 1994-1996, former Chancellor of The
Academy of American Poets, Howard was instrumental
in bringing French poetry to English-speaking readers:
his 1982 translation of Charles Baudelaire’s Les Fleurs du
Mal won an American Book Award. His Alone with America:
Essays on the Art of Poetry in the United States Since 1950 is a
critical analysis of 41 American poets originally published
in 1969 and reissued in 1980. A former editor for Paris
Review and teaching at Columbia University, Richard
Howard in his poem “The Old Men Playing Boccie
on Leroy Street” writes that “The old men play until I
think/ Their laughter is the bravest sport/ I ever listened
to in nature.”

W.H. Auden (1907-1973)

T
he poetry of English-born W.H. Auden is
more closely associated with academia and the
intellectuals of the West Side than with the Beats
he lived among while residing quietly for twenty years at
77 St. Mark’s Place from 1953 until 1972. A parishioner
at St. Mark’s Church, editor, translator, anthologist, writer
of verse plays, theological treatises, travel memoirs, and
literary criticism (The Dyer’s Hand collected his lectures
given while Professor of Poetry at Oxford), Auden
influenced a generation of poets with his ironic tone,
measured stanzas, and, some believed, as the successor
of T.S. Eliot. His influence was so pervasive that some
Beat poets wrote as a reaction to his writing style. His
often anthologized “September 1, 1939,” set in New York
City on the day Hitler invaded Poland, circulated widely
and was frequently broadcasted after the terrorist attacks
on 9/11: “Waves of anger and fear/ Circulate over the
bright/ And darkened lands…/ The unmentionable
odour of death/ Offends the September night.”

Walt Whitman (1819-1892)

N
o poet’s name is more
intimately associated
with New York
–perhaps all of America— than
Walt Whitman, who moved from
Brooklyn to Manhattan in 1841,
living in various boarding houses
including one at 12 Centre
Street. Printer, newsman, editor,
medical assistant during the
Civil War, and father of modern
poetry, Whitman observed with
delight and wonder as New York
grew from a harbor town of
50,000 to become, when he died
in 1892, the largest city in the
world, a symbol of the Industrial
Age, home to more than 2.5
million people, with another
million before the decade was
out. He loved walking the street
of lower Broadway where he
observed “endless humanity
in all phases,” and his radical,
innovative, influential Leaves of
Grass (1855) was composed “out
of my life in Brooklyn and New
York,” He remains the great
influence on other poets writing
of New York and a model for
poets today, and his bronzed,
majestic words emblazoned upon
a low fence along the esplanade
at the World Financial Center
–a poem composed when the
city foresaw the epic role in the
world it would soon hold—are
as timeless now as when written
nearly a century and a half ago:
“City of the World! (for all races
are here. All the lands of the
earth make contributions here;)
City of the Sea! city of wharves
and stores! city of tall facades
of marble and iron! Proud and
passionate city! mettlesome,
mad, extravagant city!”
