THE SABBATH AND THEGOSPEL

Hebrews 4: 9 – 10

9 There remains, then, a
Sabbathrest
for the people of God;10 for

, just as God did from his.
 Today we are going to have a Bible study on Sabbath,but I am going to
present
it in a different way than we Adventists usuallydo it.I will try to
explain
to you the truth about Sabbath in the light of thegospel.
Revelation 14
I want to show you the proof that we shouldpresent the truth about Sabbath in the light of thegospel.In the 14
th
chapter of the book of Revelation
weread about the three angels message
.It is the message which is to be proclaim by us allover the world.
Revelation 14: 6-10 (NKJV)6 Then I saw another angel flying in the midst of heaven, having the
everlasting gospel to preach
to those who dwell on the earth…7 saying with a loud voice, "Fear God and give glory to Him, for the hourof His
 judgment has come
; and worship Him who made heaven andearth, the sea and springs of water."8 And another angel
followed
, saying, "
Babylon is fallen
, is fallen, thatgreat city, because she has made all nations drink of the wine..."9 Then a third angel
followed
them, saying with a loud voice,"
If anyoneworships the beast and his image, and receives his mark on hisforehead or on his hand
,10 he himself shall also drink of the wine of the wrath of God…Look at verse
 
verse 6
 
please and tell me what accordingto this verse should be the
 
foundation
of thethree angels message? The
common ground
of all the messagesshould be what? The
everlasting gospel
of course.It is so because the first angel has the everlastinggospel.
But, please notice also that the
 
second and thirdangel don’t go separately but theyfollow
the first one.
Greek word
 
translated here as
“followed”, means“
to accompany
” or “
to join
.”So it is obvious that those three angels
gotogether
 
and that the foundation of all their messages is what? The common ground of those three messages is the everlasting gospel orthe truth about salvation by faith in Jesus.
Now,
what does it mean?
 
It means that
 
if we don’t present the truthabout
 
Sabbath
, which is the
part of thethree angels message
,
in the light of the gospel
, do we present it correctly?
No!Well, may be
 
this is the
 
reason
why oursincere brothers and sisters fromevangelical churches are still not willing toaccept the truth about Sabbath?
Unfortunately, I know
only one
Adventistpastor and theologian, by the name
 Jack Sequeira
,
who always presents the truth onSabbath in the light of the Gospel.Not long ago I could listen to him again
in theCentral London Church
where he saidthat one day
certain Pentecostalpastor
asked him, “
How it is possiblebrother that you preach the gospel truth sowonderfully and at the same time you keepthe Sabbath
?”
 To this question pastor Sequeira replied, “Do you want me to answer yourquestion privately or in front of all your congregation?”An he gave a series of Bible studies on Sabbath in front of 
 
800members
of the biggest
Pentecostal church in AddisAbaba, proving that the Sabbath is Gods seal of righteousness by faith andmemorial of the gospel.As a result of that the whole Pentecostal congregation (800 members)started to keep the fourth commandment and they also changed theirname. Since that time their name is the
 
Seventh DayPentecostal church
.Ok. Now. First of all we must keep in mind that theHebrew word „
Sabbath” literallymeans „rest
”.
And it is very interesting that also thesalvation through faith in Christ is often described in the New Testament bythe same word “rest”.
 The second important fact concerning Sabbath wewill find if we answer a very simple question:
When the
Sabbath was given forthe mankind?
It was given before thefall or after the fall?
It was given before the fall
.
 So, what does it mean?
It means that
if, Adam and Eve didn’tfall would we still be keepingGod’s Sabbath as a day of resttoday
?
 Yes, there is no doubt we would, because it was given before the fall as asign of an everlasting covenant!
 
 The next fact we should be aware of isthat the
first thing we discover aboutSabbath in the Old Testament, is that
itdoesn’t belong to man
but to who?It
belongs to God
:
Exodus 20:10“the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God.”In Exodus 31:13, God says:“my Sabbaths ye shall keep.”Isaiah 58:13“my holy day . . . the holy of theLord.”
So, knowing that the Sabbath belongs only to God,
it is
unbiblical
to
label
it as the
 Jewish Sabbath
, as someChristians do
.
 Yes, the Sabbath was made for
man
, but it does not belong to any manincluding Jews.
 
Pastor Sequeira
was once
accused
by one of evangelical ministers
 
of keeping the Jewish Sabbath, so he said to him, “Show me one text, wherethe Bible says that the Sabbath belongs to the Jews.”Well, after four or five months this evangelical minister looking quiteembarrassed came and had to confess that he couldn’t find even one textto prove his point. So pastor Sequeira said to him,
“Brother, please,
don’t you ever
 
accuse me of keeping the Jewish Sabbath. Iam not keeping the Jewish Sabbath. I am not keeping the Adventist Sabbatheither. I am keeping God’s Sabbath. And I keep it under the new covenant.”
Having established the fact, that the Sabbath wasGod’s day of rest; now we must ask,
why, does the almighty God,
who
never gets tired
set aside theseventh day as
His special day of rest?
 The answer is found in
 
Genesis 2
:
1, 2
.We read here that God, or
Christ
(becauseGod created us through Christ
)
rested
because His work of creation was completed
,
perfect
 
and
finished
.
Genesis 2: 1-3 (NIV)1 Thus the heavens and the earth were
completed
in all their vastarray.2 By the seventh day God had
finished
the work he had been doing;so on the seventh day he rested from all his work.3 And God
blessed the seventh day and made it holy
, because on it
he rested
from all the work of creating that
he had done
.
