Raising Rigor and Engagement – 4 EasySteps to Reach Your Goal

Is your top priority to raise the rigor and engagement in your classroom? Are you pressured to increase student achievement? Doyou wish your students were more self motivated? Here are four simple steps that will lead your students to success.
Step 1Raise your expectations.
Don’t mistakenly confuse high expectations with high standards. Standards arewhat we think students should learn. Expectations are what
we
believe students
will
learn.Expect the best of your students and act accordingly. If you want students tobelieve that they can succeed, then they must know that you, their teacher,believe that they are capable. When every other voice in their head says, “Noyou can’t,” you, their teacher, must counter with, “Oh yes you can!” Examine as an observer what you say and do as you interact with variousstudents. Are you consistently positive with all students? Your words andactions mirror and reveal your beliefs to students. If you don’t like what youobserve, change your beliefs.
Step 2Involve your Students.
The biggest mistake teachers make is that they work too hard and then wonder why their students sit back and won’t participate and won’t take responsibility.They don’t have to. The teacher is doing everything for them. Never say or doanything that a student can say or do. Remember, you are the guide on the side,not the sage on the stage.Involve students by giving them choices and responsibilities to plan, direct, andmonitor their learning and assessment. Use teaching and learning strategies thatrequire students to interact with each other and to take part as an active member of a community.
Step 3Guide your students.
So you’ve raised your standards and you plan activities and assessments thatrequire high order thinking. Good. Now, stop and think about how you will get allof your students there. How can you scaffold and differentiate your instruction togive everyone a personal route to success? Are you addressing multiple learningstyles? Are you using peer teaching and cooperative learning activities? Are yousupporting students by teaching them the learning and study strategies that will
