If Wi-Fi was the solu-tion you have been looking for,here’s one reason to be happy about.Technology solutions and servic-es-to-enterprises and technology firm Zylog Systems on Sunday madeits foray into the consumer retail ser-vices with the launch of ‘Wi5’ servic-es in the city. Adyar, Besant Nagar,OMR (Madhya Kailash to Siruseri), Ashok Nagar and parts of T. Nagarare among the pockets that will be Wi5-enabled as part of phase I of itsnational reach. In the next 12 to 15months the service will be extendedto the entire city and by the 24thmonth to all major metros.Now, what does that mean for youand me? Wi5 removes all the clut-tered wires you need to get or avail of a broadband connection. Also, it willenable one access high-speed (1mbps, 2 mbps and 4 mbps) wirelessbroadband connectivity through your laptop or mobile phone even when you are on the move.To enable connectivity, it hasadopted “mesh network architec-ture”, which it calls “metro Wi-Fi”. Addressing the media at thelaunch of the service, RamanujamSesharathnam, Managing Directorand Chief Operating Officer, saidthat Wi5 will bring freedom from wired limitations. “Our mantra is of-fering value for money, plus mobility – be it at home, office or while one ison the move.”Performance is the major chal-lenge for Internet service providersand Zylog Systems will be targeting the existing broadband users fornow.“There will be around 20 nodesper sq km – the key point that willenable wireless transmission,” saidJanakiraman R., Chief Operating Of-ficer and Director, Zylog Systems.Currently, 250 Wi5-enabled nodeshave been installed across the city.

Today, as an IAS rank-holder, he proudly says, “I feltthis is the best way to thank Si-vakumar sir, who helped meachieve this feat.” At the award function held atSouth Indian Film Chamberauditorium on Saturday to cel-ebrate 30 years of yesteryearactor Sivakumar’s Sri Sivaku-mar Educational and Charita-ble Trust, Veerapandyan wasthe special guest of honour.“As a paratha seller outsideMadurai railway station, I hadno option but to bury my dreams of becoming an IAS of-ficer and discontinue my stud-ies. Born in a poor family, Icouldn’t think of higher stud-ies,” remembers Veerapan-dyan. But with hisself-confidence and support of Sri Sivakumar Educational andCharitable Trust and other phi-lanthropists, Veerapandyan isnow an IAS officer, securing anall-India ranking of 53.Sri Sivakumar Educationaland Charitable Trust has beenhelping many such deserving students over the last threedecades. This year Sivakumar’sson, actor Suriya, distributedcash prizes of Rs. 10,000 each to30 deserving class XII pass-outs. The deserving studentsincluded state rank-holders,students from Tamil Eelamcamps and visually challengedstudents from Little FlowerConvent. In addition to this,funds were also given to orga-nisations that impart educationto the deprived. Addressing the event, Siva-kumar said that the SivakumarEducational Trust was foundedin 1979, when he did his 100thfilm. From then, for the next 30 years, he has been contributing to the cause. Since the last five years Suriya has taken over andis continuing the noble deed inthe name of Agaram Founda-tion. The trust takes care of de-prived and underprivilegedstudents. Agaram Foundationhas also set aside Rs. 25 lakh forthe educational developmentof the underprivileged. Actor Suriya said the trusthas tied up with Isha VidhyaSchool to educate 50 childrenof fishermen this year. Suriyaalso urged people to come for- ward and help these children in whatever way they can. ActorKarthi assured that he wouldalso join the cause from this year. Vazhai, a NGO that takes careof rural students’ welfare, re-ceived praise. Vazhai and Isha Vidhya Trust received a chequeof Rs. 2 lakh and Rs. 3.5 lakhrespectively for the uplift of de-serving underprivileged stu-dents. The event also launcheda series of advertisement cam-paigns to improve publicawareness on the importanceof education.
