Volume 9 Number 38
The Danger of Making the Wrong Choice
By Joe Lightfoot, Pastor of Adult Ministries
A couple had been debating the purchase of a new auto for weeks. He wanted a new truck. She wanted a fast little sports-like car soshe could zip through traffic around town. He would probably have settled for any beat up old truck, but everything she seemed to likewas way out of their price range. Finally she said, “Listen, I want something that goes from 0 to 200 in 4 seconds or less and my birthday is coming up, so you can just surprise me.” For her birthday, he bought her a brand new bathroom scale. He clearly made the wrong choice!Last Sunday Pastor Mike taught that, based on our commitment to Jesus and the guidance we receive from the Bible, our characteris transformed through the choices we make. This is true in the area of moral purity and the other four areas in the discipleship model. From the letter to the Church at Ephesus (Ephesians 4:17–5:21), 16 positive choices (“Go” Commands) and 13prohibitions (“Stop” Commands) were identified. These choices are:
VerseGoCommandsStopCommands
4:17 live no longer as the ungodly do22throw o your old evil nature and your former way of life23spiritually renew your thoughts and attitudes24display a new nature because you are a new person25be a truth-tellerput away all falsehood26 don’t sin by letting anger gain control over you28use your hands for honest workstop stealing28then give generously to others in need29let everything you say be good and helpfuldont use foul or abusive language30 don’t grieve the Holy Spirit b y the way you live31 get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as alltypes of malicious behavior32be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another5:1follow God’s example in everything you do2live a life lled with love for others, following the example of Christ3 let there be no sexual immorality, impurity, or greed among you4express your thankfulness to Goddo away with obscene stories, foolish talk, and coarse jokes11expose worthless deeds of evil and darknesstake no part in worthless deeds of evil and darkness15be careful to live as a wise persondo not live as a fool16make the most of every opportunity for doing good17try to understand what the Lord wants you to dodont act thoughtlessly18be lled and controlled by the Holy Spiritdont be drunk with wine
The challenge is to add each of these commands, these habits, these choices to the content of our character as we continue on thepathway to growing in the image of Jesus. However, the journey does not stop here. As we continue down this road of spiritual transformation we see that these choices, thesecharacter qualities are not lived out in isolation. For example, this morning we look at how we live these choices out in relationship toothers, in our family and in the family of God. This is the next step on the pathway to spiritual growth.
