First Federated ChurchSunday, April 6, 2008
By Polly Flug
The introduction o a two-service ormat andthe promise o the addition o a third servicethis summer marks another new beginning orour church body. “This building, with its 3,098-seat capacity, will not drive this ministry,” saysPastor Mike Rose. “Buildings are simply toolsor us to use in ministry.”Attendance statistics show that ater 20years o a one-size-and-one-time-ts-all serviceormat marked by decreasing numbers, it’s timeto make a change. A change that will ministerto people’s needs or dierent music styles anddierent times or services. “Our attendancenumbers and our conversations with peoplehave shown that one service does not t all,”Rose explains. “We want to create ministryormats that speak the same cultural languagesthat olks in our community speak and wouldlike to be a part o.”“The new ormat gives people choices, andsometimes choices are hard,” he says. “We haveto decide to give up something good to get something better.”And Rose says it will require us to be committed to one another,to work together and to have a can-do attitude, as change is otendicult. “The basis and ocus o this change is that we want tobe sold out to Christ,” Rose adds. There will be six to eight times every year when the threeservices combine to celebrate and worship together, which shouldhelp avoid the eeling o having two or three separate congrega-tions worshipping in the same building.Beore the contemporary service can begin, the chapel needsto be renovated. In addition to replacing worn pews and carpet, the room will take on a more contemporary look. “In 1980, whenFederated purchased Franklin Junior High School and renovatedthe school auditorium to make a worship center, most people whocame to services had some church background and were comort-able with a traditional church-like setting,” Rose says.“In 2008, that is not the case. Many visitors have no back-ground in church o any kind, and they may not be comortablein a worship center that looks like a traditional church,” heexplained. To appeal to today’s seekers, the renovations willinclude installation o theater seats, updated lighting, sound andsound booth modications, as well as some much-needed, but notvisible, work on the inrastructure o the room. The $290,000 needed orretrotting the chapel or thecontemporary service and orother core church unctions willbe covered by private dona-tions, not budgeted unds, andno debt will be incurred. When renovations are com-plete, the chapel will be usedon a regular basis or weddings,unerals and other smaller ser-vices. This will match the roomsize to the size o the event, providing a more intimate set-ting. And rom a stewardship – economic – standpoint it makesgood sense, as it’s much more ecient to heat or cool the chapelthan the main auditorium. The important thing to remember through this new beginningis that our mission has not changed. I we are committed to oneanother, work together, purposeully assume a can-do attitudeand are sold out to Christ, this transition will help us grow, not just in attendance, but spiritually.

alse modesty. There justwasn’t enough room tonish the quote.“Oh, that,” Currysaid. “It’s Philippians4:13: ‘I can do all thingsthrough Him whostrengthens me.’ It’salways been one o my avorite Bible verses. … I realize thatwhat I do on the basketball court isn’t a measure o my ownstrength. Having that there keeps me ocused on the game, aconstant reminder o Who I’m playing or.”Stephen Curry is an accomplished athlete. He is also anoutstanding spokesman or Jesus in his own unique way.It is helpul to realize that you too can be an outstandingspokesman or Jesus, and you don’t need to be an accomplishedathlete. Curry used the opportunities and tools available to himto share his aith. You can too.One simple way is to bring your neighbors, co-workers, amilymembers and riends to the Alpha Course. It is a simple and e-ective way to help others understand
Who you play for.
Alpha isa 13-week Monday evening group study that includes dinner anda video lesson ollowed by small group discussions. When youbring someone, we do the rest. The next Alpha Course begins on Monday, April 21. Beginnow to pray or who God would have you bring.

By-and-large, college athletics maintains a degree o puritythat proessional sports has lost. I you are not a sports an, stick with me as this is not a story about sports per se.Especially during the college ootball bowl season and theNCAA basketball tournament, there are a number o humaninterest stories that transcend the athletic competition.I’ve been moved by stories o athletes escaping war-ravagedhomelands to achieve academic and athletic success along withmuch valued reedom or o young men who have lost bothparents due to drugs and gang violence and have successullytaken on the responsibility o raising their younger siblings whileattending college and excelling in sports. This past week, another inspiring story has risen above theexcitement o athletic wins and losses.Stephen Curry is a 20-year-old sophomore basketball playeror Davidson College. Davidson is a 1,700 student liberal artscollege near Charlotte, North Carolina. Curry played remarkablywell and led his team to unprecedented success in the 2008NCAA Basketball Tournament. While his accomplishments arerecord-worthy, what has gained signicant notice are his eet—orwhat is on them.On Curry’s NIKE basketball shoes is a handwritten quote, “Ican do all things…” Oten this type o writing would be a suresign o bravado or cockiness. That requently happens in sports.Curry is dierent. He has exhibited a humility that’s perectly atodds with the statement he penned on his shoes.“It’s easy to give a lot o glory to yoursel when you have a loto success,” Curry said in an ESPN.com interview. “And I couldget into the mind-set that everything I’m doing is because o me.But I just can’t think like that.”So it seems the writing on his shoes is not the product o ame-rst mentality or an overblown ego lurking beneath a shell o
