Summer’s end isn’t all bad.

Despite the fact that time is passing far too fast for many of us, we
have so many great things to look forward to as we enter my favor-
ite season: fall. So, bring on the autumn foliage, the locally grown
apples and pumpkins, the reprieve from bugs, the fabulous game
of football and the comforting warm drinks!
As our outdoor environment goes through its wondrous trans-
formation and our lives return to a somewhat calmer, more struc-
tured flow after summer’s sweet chaos, some of us may be inspired
to make “adaptations” in our own lives. The peaceful, crisp walks
in autumn’s beautiful landscapes tend to encourage reflection and
reconnection with our “selves.” So what better time to explore the
many benefits of self-awareness and authenticity? Practicing this
mindfulness, from what I’m learning on my own personal journey,
can result in happier, healthier and richer lives.
Turning away from our “selves” for a bit now, September is packed
full of health awareness initiatives that deserve our attention. This
month, we focus on: pain, childhood obesity, traumatic brain
injury, alcohol and drug addition recovery, and ovarian cancer, to
name a few. Despite what each of us may be going through person- our bodies and aware of a particular area, the pelvic floor. These

Choosing
appropriate
chews for
your pet

C
hewing is a natural part of a dog’s life. Puppies chew just
about anything they find as they grow and explore their
world. Chewing can relieve stress and is important for
good dental health. Knowing how to choose the appropriate chew
is very important for your dog’s health and safety.
Use the following information to educate yourself about the
various types of natural chews.
• Rawhide: Rawhide products are made from the hide of an
animal, usually cattle. They come in chips, “bones” with knots
at each end and rolls. Chips may be appropriate for small
dogs, while the bones and rolls come in a variety of sizes for
small to large dogs. Chews with knotted ends should only
be provided while there is supervision, as the dog may try to
swallow the end whole. Rawhide treats should be made from
U.S. processed, thick cut, non-bleached hide.
• Bully sticks and tendons: These may also be called
pizzles, steer sticks or whizzers, among other things. They are a
tendonous part and are better digested by most dogs than hide.
Choose longer sticks for bigger dogs, as these may need to be
taken away as they get small enough to swallow. We

• Bones: Dogs with healthy teeth may love a raw bone to chew.

layan chews, fish skin chews, sweet potato chews, dried meat

The Himalayan chews are a type of very hard cheese that can
be long lasting. Fish skin chews are a lighter-weight chew full
of the goodness of fish oils. Sweet potato slices are a good alter-

meat jerky-style strips made in the U.S. may not last long with
hearty chewers but may be a nice quick treat. Tails do contain

Tracheas are a good source of glucosamine.
