Annual Report
2006

The Museum o Science sits at a pivotal moment: Extraordinary successes o thepast year were signposts to its uture as the science and technology center o the 21stcentury. We will achieve this goal through our strategic initiatives, or “pillars.” We willenhance our core exhibits and programs, illuminate the lie sciences—the theme o this report—champion engineering and technological literacy, and ultimately renewour physical presence. The institution’s nancial strength is a result o the year’s banner achievements. Most notably,
Star Wars: Where Science Meets Imagination,
developed with LucaslmLtd., our rst major interactive exhibit to incorporate engineering lessons, garneredcritical acclaim. Actor Anthony Daniels (C-3PO) emceed its gala premiere, with specialguest George Lucas and catering by Wolgang Puck. Last year, over 1.6 million visitorsexperienced the Museum, while Star Wars attracted record crowds and beat attendanceprojections by 23 percent.Treasured in Boston, the Museum is also respected nationwide or its visitorexperience and accessibility. As partners joined us, we orged ahead with our strategicinitiatives. The National Center or Technological Literacy
®
is working with 28 statesto introduce engineering into schools and lielong learning centers. Rhode IslandGovernor Donald Carcieri calls our eorts the “beginning o a movement to breathenew lie” into math and science education.Meanwhile, we made strides in lie science education. A major git rom GenzymeCorporation established the Genzyme Biotechnology Education Initiative. Throughthe Barbara and Malcolm L. Sherman Fund or Adult Programs, we are enrichingour nearly 30 adult-learning programs. In addition, a Hayden Foundation grant willenable us to acquire the latest Zeiss Starmaster projector, providing a cutting-edgeplanetarium experience. As we gained momentum in ullling our strategic vision, we established theChairman’s Circle to recognize the Museum’s most generous beneactors, such ascharter members Sophia and Bernard M. Gordon, whose leadership and vision enrichlives and advance the Museum o Science. The Gordons’ git endowing the Museum’sengineering initiatives opens a new door to inspire tomorrow’s engineering leaders.Last year saw denitive steps towards the Museum’s transormation rom a belovedlocal landmark to a national leader in science and technology education—thanksto the critical support o our partners and beneactors. This book is a tribute to ourcontinuing work together.

is changing our lives.New knowledge inuences our decisions,uels discourse, and drives societal change. In response to the dramatic growth in thebioscience world, the Museum o Scienceis expanding its ocus on lie science andthe technology behind it. We are creating new, permanent exhibits and programsas well as strengthening the presence o the lie sciences in temporary exhibits,Omni flms, orums, and other ormats.
This li sin initiativ
also reects theMuseum’s championship o technological literacy across America by incorporatingcutting-edge technology into interactive exhibits and programs at the Museum andin classrooms. By expanding our engagement with lie science and technology, theMuseum honors its past as a natural history museum while connecting to the uturethrough technological innovation.
Or goal is to rat th sin an thnologyntr o th 21st ntry.
People will make that happen, and we are ortunate tohave knowledgeable, dedicated experts and deeply committed donors who bringcompelling and innovative exhibits and programs in lie science to the Museum. Wehope you will enjoy meeting a ew o them in the ollowing pages.
