Preface to Meeting
I want to welcome each of you to the 2012 annual meeting of the Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine. Consistent with our theme, Impact of Trauma on Teens: Building the Safety Net, we are offering a number of outstanding sessions on combating the effects of trauma, including but sadly not limited to trauma resulting from natural disasters, dating violence, sexual exploitation, bullying, family conflict, devastating illnesses, parental loss and foster care placement. These sessions are geared toward helping health professionals, advocates, researchers and educators identify novel methods to reduce the impact of trauma on adolescents and young adultsthrough clinical care, intervention and prevention efforts, research, advocacy and policy-setting. The more than 100 sessions, research presentations, workshops, institutes, hot topics, professional development luncheons and plenary sessions will also address a variety of other adolescent-health related issues, such as identifying and treating overweight and obesity, identifying and preventing cardiovascular disease, new research on adolescent risk behaviors, health policy and advocacy; and will include a series of sessions offering professional development for both the new and established adolescent and young adult health professional. Our Gallagher Lecture will be presented by Brian Flay, DPhil, a social psychologist and international leader on issues related to adolescent risk and trauma prevention and positive youth development. Dr. Flays work focuses on the role of mass media in health promotion, drug abuse prevention and smoking cessation, and youth AIDS prevention. He will be discussing, Preventing Violence and Bullying Through SocialEmotional and Character Development: Theory and Results from Randomized Trials. Our dynamic plenary presentations will include Ronald Feinstein, MD, and his panel who will present on Disaster Planning: Earl J. Soileau, Robert E. McKinney, Jr., LCSW, and Keith Perrin, MD; and an international panel of speakers, including George Patton, MD, Russell Viner, MD, PhD, Shanthi Ameratunga, PhD, and Richard Catalano, PhD, who will provide a global perspective on injury and violence. In addition to our formal educational sessions, we offer a number of social activities that we hope you will enjoy. All students and new members are invited to a Welcome
Ne
Breakfast on Wednesday, March 14. In addition, new members and those requesting mentors should meet up with their assigned meeting member host during the Welcome Breakfast, lunch, or prior to the Opening Reception at 7:00 p.m., all on March 14. We are also continuing the SAHM Fun Walk and invite you to join us on Thursday, March 15. This event is not only fun and healthy, but it provides an opportunity for participants to contribute to SAHMs Edie Moore Student Travel Scholarship initiative. Runners are welcome too! Please, even if you dont want to join in formally, consider donating to this worthy endeavor. I want to thank the Program Committee, who worked extremely hard to help make this 2012 program outstanding. First, I must highlight the tremendous contributions that Laura Richardson, Associate Director of Programs, made to this program. Meeting Objectives
As a result of this meeting, participants will be able to: Describe the current epidemiology of trauma affecting adolescents and young adults in the United States and across the globe. Identify intervention and treatment programs aimed at reducing the effects of trauma. Restate examples of how to integrate prevention efforts into everyday clinical practice.
Meeting Information
Overall Meeting Evaluation
The Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine needs your input to enhance future meetings. An online meeting evaluation survey will be e-mailed to you shortly after the SAHM 2012 Annual Meeting. Your participation in this survey is greatly appreciated.
Educational Need
SAHM members help to plan and coordinate professional adolescent health education programs in all regions of the United States and across the globe. These programs are directed at specialists in the field, as well as to other interested health professionals aiming to acquire skills to meet the important needs of adolescents. At SAHMs Annual Meeting, innovative research, clinical workshops and discussion forums are presented for attendees of diverse disciplines. From natural disasters to dating violence, family conflict to devastating illnesses, parental loss to foster care placement; every day adolescents and young adults in the United States and around the world experience and witness profound traumatic events. Sometimes these events affect entire cities, other times just schools or an individual are affected; but, regardless of size, each of these events has the potential to profoundly change the lives of the youth who experience them. Many adolescents traverse these experiences with strength and resilience, while others find it more difficult to recover from the impact trauma has on their lives. As health professionals, we have a critical role in identifying avenues through clinical care, intervention and prevention efforts, research, advocacy, and/or policy setting to help mitigate the impact of trauma on teens.
Badges
Attendees must register and receive a name badge. Your badge will permit entrance to presentations. You may be stopped if you enter sessions without wearing a name badge.
