The lamps for attraction

Choosing the right lamp
To help you to achieve the most effective spread and level of illumination for your particular application, we include a range overview in this catalogue. This overview shows the power, beam angle, cap, voltage and life.

Cost of light
Cost of light is very important when replacing a lamp. To upgrade a lamp from standard to energy saving, for example can give a significant saving over the lifetime of the lamp.

Light, Life & Voltage

For any particular lamp, the light output and life depend upon the voltage at which a lamp is operated. For instance, as approximations, the light output varies as the 3.6th power of the voltage and the life varies inversely as the 12th power of the voltage. The chart and tables below illustrate the effects of overvoltage or undervoltage applied to lamp on its current, life and light output. The values given (except for long life lamps) are reasonably valid between 95% and 110% rated volts. Beyond this range the indicated characteristics may not be realised because of the increasing influence of factors which cannot be incorporated into the chart. The chart applies only to D. C. or sine-wave A. C. current. The data may differ particularly for lamp operation on halfwave rectified voltage, semiconductor dimming devices of constant operation. Tungsten Halogen Principle

The tungsten filament is enclosed in a gas filled quartz bulb, together with a controlled quantity of halogen. At the operating temperature some tungsten vapourizes and migrates to the cooler areas of the bulb wall where before it can be deposited, it combines with the halogen to form a tungsten halide. This circulates until it comes near the filament where the halide dissociates and deposits the tungsten back on the filament. This cycle continues throughout the operating life of the lamp. As the bulb wall remains clean the bulb size can be reduced considerably by the use of quartz which can withstand the high wall temperatures. The small bulb and strong materials withstand much higher working pressures, this reduces filament evaporation, thus offering increased performance either as more light or longer life.

Tungsten Halogen Lamps & UV Radiation

Potentially harmful high energy UV- C and UV- B radiation emitted by the filament are absorbed by the wall of the capsule which is produced with specially developed UV Control quartz. The use of UV control quartz together with an optically neutral front cover glass allows the lamp to fully comply with the latest stringent requirements of IEC60357.

The application of GE Thin Film Technology is designed to maintain consistent colour throughout life. The durable tantala and silica oxides can withstand temperatures of 500 C without degradation over a rated life of 5000 hours on 20, and 35W lamps, 6000 hours on 50W lamps and 4000 hours on 71W lamps. This coating will not degrade over life, a high level of lumen maintenance is achieved throughout lamp life. Normal dichroic coatings can lose as much as 50% of lumen maintenance over life as non-durable coatings degrade. The ConstantColorTM coating ensures that light colouration is the same from lamp to lamp. As the coating is applied to the inside and the outside of the reflector, a reduced quantity of light is wasted out the back of the lamp. The light that does escape through the reflector is a consistent hue which will not vary from lamp to lamp through life ensuring replacements do not appear different from existing lamps. The ConstantColorTM interference film still allows 66% of the infra-red heat to pass through the back of the reflector to ensure a cool beam is achieved while reflecting forward almost 100% of the visible light.

IEC Standards
GE tungsten halogen lamps comply with the following international standards where applicable: IEC 60357 Tungsten Halogen Lamps, IEC 60061 Lamp Caps & Holders.

Low Voltage Lamps

The value engineered solution

Precise Standard MR16 & MR16 Start

Precise Standard MR16 and MR16 Start lamps are low voltage tungsten halogen reflector- mounted lamps popular for downlighting and accent lighting applications. The Cover Glass (closed) versions incorporate an integral clear lens to ensure that both bulb and reflector are protected from dust and dirt during installation and operation. The cover glass effectively eliminates UV- C radiation and greatly reduces UV- B radiation. The closed versions use the same reflectors as the open versions and hence have the same dimensions, allowing users to interchange lamps at will. Small size Precise beam control High efficacy Excellent white light

Low Voltage Lamps

TAL 50 & TAL 100 ConstantColorTM comprise a small halogen low voltage filament capsule permanently cemented into a one-piece, dichroic coated all glass reflector. The reflector is ellipsoidal in shape. The filament is precisely aligned along the optical axis of the reflector during the manufacturing process to achieve the required beam pattern. The Twist And Locks tough mechanical bond and greater electrical contact between lamp and base means: featuring ConstantColorTM coating tecnology no retaining springs or rings to fit or release - offering faster lamp installation and replacement no risk of arcing - improving electrical reliability and safety.

Mains Voltage Lamps

GE Halogen PAR lamps run on mains voltage, so you no longer need transformers or extra wiring to enjoy the crisp white light. These lamps are direct replacements for Incandescent lamps. Computer designed faceted reflector ensures maximum output with high beam control. The clear front glass and the reflectors intense sparkle produce livelier accent lighting. Colour temperature of 2900K enhances colours and mixes admirably with low voltage dichroic lamps. 2500 - 3000 hours life 150 - 200% longer than Incandescent Cool white light

Customer talking

The major fabric retailers, Rosebys, has been giving its stores a fresh look with GE Lighting lamps. A combination of GEs Polylux XLTM and Precise ConstantColorTM lamps have been installed in order to create a more natural atmosphere. With the help of Orchard Electrical, who carried out the design and installation of the GE lamps, Rosebys now has a high quality and cost effective lighting system.

The main reason for selecting these GE lamps was their excellent colour rendering, explained Ray Crookes, from Orchard Electrical. We did not want a customer to buy an item they thought was brown only to find when they took it outside that it was red. Reliability and long life were also important and by working with GE Lighting we have also been able to offer Rosebys cost savings in terms of revisits and maintenance.

Although it measures just 12 feet by 16 feet, one room at the Cakebread Cellars Winery is of particular importance. Because it is here visitors to the family-owned vintner can examine, taste and enjoy Cakebread wine.

"The owners, Jack and Dolores Cakebread, wanted the illumination in the Tasting Room to be respectful of the architectural form and rural setting of the winery," said Ivan Hawtof, principal Hawtof Associates, Lighting Consultants. "Both they and I wanted to create an environment where the visitor's five senses were in balance." 17

Helpful Hints

Can halogen lamps be dimmed in the same way that GLS lamps are dimmed?

Yes, halogen lamps can be dimmed in a way similar to GLS lamp dimming. However, if the halogen lamp is operating at substantially below rated voltage the lamp may go black. If the bulb wall of the halogen lamp running at under voltage does not exceed a certain temperature chemical reactions cannot prevent the deposition of tungsten on the bulb wall. Therefore it is important to operate the halogen lamp without dimming from time to time.

Is there a distance to be considered in between the lamp and the lit object?

Its cca. 50- 100 cm but it also depends on the wattage of the lamp and the actual object how heat sensitive it is.

Why has the halogen bulb gone dark?

a) The lamp is defective; b) Lamp is overheated or overcooled; c) Lamp surface was not clean when installed; d) Has been dimmed for a prolonged time
