Hello...
By Greg Volz, Incoming PresidentI want to share a quick story. My wife, Kelly, and Idecided we needed a bigger house so we started to lookat homes from Potomac to Annapolis. I loved the space, the big yards and of course the garage!! What guydoesn’t love a big garage. However, we always cameback to our 1,700 square foot, garage-less home andour terrific neighbors, the restaurants, grocery stores, coffee shops, dry cleaners, metro stop, and on and on.We came to the realization that we have everything weneed right here in East Bethesda. We are so fortunateto live in this great community.Which brings me to why I chose to take on the roleas President of East Bethesda Citizens Association. Iwant to help make this an even better place to comehome. My goals for the next year are pretty simple andinline with our objectives as stated in the EBCA By-laws:1. Unite residents and promote the bettermentof our neighborhood2. Get people involved in our organization3. Operate within the framework of our By-laws.My focus will be within the physical boundaries of EBCA: Jones Bridge Rd to Columbia CC to East WestHighway and Wisconsin Ave.: approximately 1300homes. This is a list of ideas to help get the ballrolling:
Develop a closer relationship with BCC HighSchool and promote school events such as sportingand theater. We can include the school eventscalendar on our website and have an EBCA nightat a football game.
Tie the various neighborhood block partiestogether in a way that we can broaden ourhorizons a bit and get to know others in our

By Ilaya Hopkins, Outgoing PresidentThe May general membership meeting coveredimportant topics but the theme was clear: we allbenefit when we look out for one another. Fromcleaning up standing water in our yards to help abatethe mosquito problem in the near by area, to pickingup extra newspapers at houses that are unoccupied, towatching for suspicious activity and reporting it to thepolice—all of these actions help to keep ourneighborhood clean, safe and a great place to live. As for the issue of delivery of the Examinernewspaper, when contacted the paper says that theydo honor an individual’s request to stop delivery. Therefore, we will not pursue stoppage of delivery forthe neighborhood. To stop delivery at your address, call 703 560-4000 or go online towww.dcexaminer.com. If you have problems with that, you can contact the Montgomery County Office of Consumer Protection atConsumerProtection@montgomeryCountymd.gov orwww.montgomerycountymd.gov/consumer. As forpapers left at homes that are unoccupied, it is helpfulif we can all pitch in and add them to our recycling tokeep our streets clean and our storm water pathsclear. On a personal note, the meeting was also importantbecause we were able to pass the torch to the nextgroup of residents who are keen on strengthening ourcommunity. I am very excited about the energy andideas they bring to the organization. Obviously, thisdoes not happen without the support of a number of people. I’d like to use this opportunity to thank somany volunteers who have been involved over the lasttwo years; to Dave Saltzman and Tori Hall who havebeen fantastic VPs, each pursuing issues of importanceto them and the community; to Dorian Patchin andCarmen Abrams who brought our website up to the

Explore the possibilities of building a neighborhood pool.
Re-energize our neighborhoodwatch program.
Continue to strengthen andpromote the communicationtools we have available like thewebsite, newsletter, and othermeans. I would like to createan opt-in neighborhood phonedirectory or listing on thewebsite too.We need to get more peopleinvolved and increase thepercentage of dues payingmembers which right now ishovering at around 30%. We have alot of talented, creative andenergetic people in thisneighborhood. We need to tap intothese resources to help us achievethese goals.I’m excited about thisopportunity. I look forward toworking with the executivecommittee and meeting morepeople in this great neighborhood. Iencourage you to contact me withyour ideas and, more importantly, how you plan to execute your idea! Finally, I want to thank IlayaHopkins for her two years of dedicated service to EBCA. Sheand her team have taken on a lot of issues facing our community. Oneof the most important efforts, inmy opinion, is developing ourwebsite. You need to check it out if you haven’t already, www.ebca.org.In addition, we have been wellrepresented on the Purple Line,BRAC and school choice issues, notto mention the social events suchas the Halloween parade and laborday picnic. We are fortunate tohave a great voice for EBCA asIlaya focuses her efforts on a largercounty scale.
