Drop in for a quick bite at
Sri Monisha Fast Foods in
Triplicane to see an entire
family engaged in
different chores.
ine years ago when R. Yuv- araj, a manager with Tamil Nadu Minerals, retired the
first option that crossed his mind was to start a small ea- tery. And that was the beginning of Sri Monisha Fast Foods on Venkatachalapathi Street in Trip- licane. The joint serves home- made South Indian delicacies
and is run by sexagenarian Yuv- araj and his entire family. While his wife Y. Saraswathi takes care of the kitchen, his son and son- in-law take care of the service section.
“Post-retirement I found this an easy option as the food busi- ness could be started with mini- mum capital,” says Yuvaraj. “I couldn’t manage alone, so I roped in my son and son-in-law. They both are graduates and
were employed in private sectors but quit to devote themselves full-time to this venture.”
The eatout only opens for breakfast (7 a.m. to 10.30 a.m.) and dinner (7 to 10.30 p.m.). It, however, makes up its afternoon business from its second outlet and coffee shop on Big Street, where variety rice is served from 11.30 a.m. to 2 p.m. This is a kai- yendhi bhavan, so customers are expected to hold their plates in their hands. The difference, though, is the fact that this is an indoor restaurant, not a roadside cart. Takeaway is also available.
What we like about this eat out is the hygienic environment, plus the food is much cheaper. The joint is also equipped with an in- dustrial version of Aquaguard.
“Pongal, chappathi and parotta are the fast-moving items,” says Yuvaraj, adding, “We cater to around 700 customers per day. We charge 60 per cent of the ac- tual cost of other hotels and pro- vide hygienic home food. This is our USP which brings us many customers.”■

Chain-snatchers
and their
ingenious ways
scalating cases of chain-snatching incidents in the city have put the city police on the hot seat. While police are working hard to curb the crime,
Conventional methods of robbing on the pretext of enquiring about an address and snatching the chain and zipping away on two-wheelers are passé.
On June 6, 40-year-old Bhuvaneshwari of Thiruvalluvar Nagar in Kodungaiyur had gone to her relative’s house a few streets away.
While she was walking back home around 7.30 p.m., a motorcycle with two men wearing helmets halted a few metres
The rider of the vehicle put on the high beam of the headlights, temporarily blind- ing Bhuvaneshwari. In the meantime, the pillion rider snatched her gold chain weighing 6.5 sovereigns and the duo rode away quickly.
Bhuvaneshwari lodged a complaint with the Kodungaiyur police, who are now in- vestigating the incident.
Police sources say cases of blinding women with high-beam lights and robbing them of their gold chains have occurred in T. Nagar, Teynampet, Anna Nagar and Ve- lachery in the last two months.
Facilitating these crimes are halogen lamps fitted on motorcycle headlights, which are capable of blinding a victim for a few seconds when the light hits the face.
“These lights have very powerful beams compared to the regular ones that come fitted on the two-wheelers.
The whitish blue high beam from these lights can blind the human eye for close to five seconds,” said Muneer Basha, an auto- mobile spare parts dealer on Harris Road, Pudupet.
Traffic police personnel have been di- rected to apprehend motorcycles fitted with halogen lamps and extra powerful headlights and do a background check on the rider, police sources add.
Some culprits have started to use autor- ickshaws for the crime and the case of a 41-year-old homemaker being robbed of her 4.5 sovereign gold chain is an example. Pondy Bazaar police identified the victim as Madhavi Rao, a resident of Pondy Ba- zaar who was heading for work around 9 a.m. on June 4. “An unidentified autorick- shaw driver who was pretending to be working on the vehicle snatched the vic-
Similarly, Julia Shifa (34) of Ashtalaksh- mi Koil Street in Velachery was robbed of her 5.5 sovereign gold chain by two men in an autorickshaw when she was returning from work near Velachery.
Police say vehicles used for crime mostly flaunt fake registration plates, making in- vestigation difficult.
In many chain-snatching cases in the city involving the theft of gold chains worth three sovereigns and above, police suspect that the culprits have used X cut- ting pliers to cut the gold chains with ease. An example was the recent theft of a wom- an’s 10 sovereign gold chain in Anna Na- gar, where the victim didn’t even realise that the chain was removed off her neck before the culprits bagged the chain.■
