ine years ago when R. Yuv-araj, a manager with TamilNadu Minerals, retired thefirst option that crossedhis mind was to start a small ea-tery. And that was the beginning of Sri Monisha Fast Foods on Venkatachalapathi Street in Trip-licane. The joint serves home-made South Indian delicaciesand is run by sexagenarian Yuv-araj and his entire family. Whilehis wife Y. Saraswathi takes careof the kitchen, his son and son-in-law take care of the servicesection.“Post-retirement I found thisan easy option as the food busi-ness could be started with mini-mum capital,” says Yuvaraj. “Icouldn’t manage alone, so Iroped in my son and son-in-law.They both are graduates and were employed in private sectorsbut quit to devote themselvesfull-time to this venture.”The eatout only opens forbreakfast (7 a.m. to 10.30 a.m.)and dinner (7 to 10.30 p.m.). It,however, makes up its afternoonbusiness from its second outletand coffee shop on Big Street, where variety rice is served from11.30 a.m. to 2 p.m. This is a kai- yendhi bhavan, so customers areexpected to hold their plates intheir hands. The difference, though, is the fact that this is anindoor restaurant, not a roadsidecart. Takeaway is also available. What we like about this eat outis the hygienic environment, plusthe food is much cheaper. The joint is also equipped with an in-dustrial version of Aquaguard.“Pongal, chappathi and parottaare the fast-moving items,” says Yuvaraj, adding, “We cater toaround 700 customers per day. We charge 60 per cent of the ac-tual cost of other hotels and pro-vide hygienic home food. This isour USP which brings us many customers.”

scalating cases of chain-snatching incidents in the city have put the city police on the hot seat. While policeare working hard to curb the crime, the criminals seem to have turned to in-genious methods.Conventional methods of robbing onthe pretext of enquiring about an addressand snatching the chain and zipping away on two-wheelers are passé.
High-beam robbing
On June 6, 40-year-old Bhuvaneshwariof Thiruvalluvar Nagar in Kodungaiyur hadgone to her relative’s house a few streetsaway. While she was walking back homearound 7.30 p.m., a motorcycle with twomen wearing helmets halted a few metresin front of her.The rider of the vehicle put on the highbeam of the headlights, temporarily blind-ing Bhuvaneshwari. In the meantime, thepillion rider snatched her gold chain weighing 6.5 sovereigns and the duo rodeaway quickly.Bhuvaneshwari lodged a complaint withthe Kodungaiyur police, who are now in-vestigating the incident.Police sources say cases of blinding  women with high-beam lights and robbing them of their gold chains have occurred inT. Nagar, Teynampet, Anna Nagar and Ve-lachery in the last two months.Facilitating these crimes are halogenlamps fitted on motorcycle headlights, which are capable of blinding a victim for afew seconds when the light hits the face.“These lights have very powerful beamscompared to the regular ones that comefitted on the two-wheelers.The whitish blue high beam from theselights can blind the human eye for close tofive seconds,” said Muneer Basha, an auto-mobile spare parts dealer on Harris Road,Pudupet.Traffic police personnel have been di-rected to apprehend motorcycles fitted with halogen lamps and extra powerfulheadlights and do a background check onthe rider, police sources add.
Autorickshaw chain-snatchers
Some culprits have started to use autor-ickshaws for the crime and the case of a41-year-old homemaker being robbed of her 4.5 sovereign gold chain is an example.Pondy Bazaar police identified the victimas Madhavi Rao, a resident of Pondy Ba-zaar who was heading for work around 9a.m. on June 4. “An unidentified autorick-shaw driver who was pretending to be working on the vehicle snatched the vic-tim’s gold chain and fled in the autorick-shaw,” said an investigating officer.Similarly, Julia Shifa (34) of Ashtalaksh-mi Koil Street in Velachery was robbed of her 5.5 sovereign gold chain by two men inan autorickshaw when she was returning from work near Velachery.Police say vehicles used for crime mostly flaunt fake registration plates, making in-vestigation difficult.
The X cutting pliers
In many chain-snatching cases in thecity involving the theft of gold chains worth three sovereigns and above, policesuspect that the culprits have used X cut-ting pliers to cut the gold chains with ease. An example was the recent theft of a wom-an’s 10 sovereign gold chain in Anna Na-gar, where the victim didn’t even realisethat the chain was removed off her neck before the culprits bagged the chain.
