Jan. – August 2001Samford UniversityI began this business, which offers several types of supplementaleducation to middle and high school students. I managed thefinances and the administration of the business, tutored one-on-one, taught ACT/SAT preparation courses, designed alladvertisement materials, coordinated all marketing, as well asrecruited and trained new tutors.I taught several undergraduate mathematics courses, creating alllesson plans and testing material. I served on faculty boards thatchose textbooks, made curriculum decisions, and worked toimplement general study skills into the remedial math courses. Iheld office hours and study sessions outside lecture time toensure students were able to perform their best.Chosen during the pilot year of this program designed toencourage and empower inner city high school students toattend college, I created the mathematics curriculum (2003) andthe ACT prep curriculum (2004, 2005) for this program. Icollaborated with teachers in various fields to devise theconnected interdisciplinary curriculum. All math and ACT prepinstructors then implemented the curriculum I designed.This position requires the same responsibilities as an Instructor, just with lighter course load, allowing me to complete mymaster’s degree.I led both tutoring sessions and larger lectures for middle andhigh school students in chemistry, all levels of mathematics,Spanish, English, and biology, while also conducting preparatorysessions for the ACT, SAT, PSAT, GRE, and GED for thisbusiness located in Birmingham, AL.Comprised of six leaders, the team organized and implementedNew Student Orientation. We facilitated the selection andtraining of eighty fall orientation leaders, as well as all of theplanning for summer orientation sessions, a week of orientationleader training, and the weeklong fall orientation. In addition tomy team responsibilities, I personally arranged all communityservice hours with more than forty agencies and six hundredvolunteers for Birmingham Connections.
