How My Brother Leon Brought home a wife.

Group 1 Asia: Leon and Maria arrived at Nagrebcan at is currently waiting for Baldo to pick them up Ervin: Hello? Hey Baldo where are you? Me and my wife has just arrived here in the bayan. Cedric: Dont worry Im almost there and I brought someone who missed you so much. Ervin: really? Who is it? Anyways well just talk when you get here. Asia: not long after the phone call Baldo arrived riding in a bull. Nicole: Oh! You must be baldo. Ive heard so much great things about you. And I presume that this is Labang of whom I have heard so much. Cedric: youre right! Its nice to finally meet the lady my brother has been talking about. Ervin: So baldo where are we going to ride? Why didnt you bring the Kalesa? Cedric: father said to bring labang instead. I hope you dont mind Maria? Nicole: oh of course, I dont mind t all. Asia: what baldo and leon didnt know was that, Even though Maria came and touched Labang's forehead with her long fingers she was a little hesitant in riding the big animal with long curving horns. Ervin: Maria! Nicole: Yes Noel? Asia: for a second there Baldo got confused on who Maria was referring to as Noel and pondered silently amongst himself thinking Father might not like it. But it was only the name of my brother Leon said backward and it sounded much better that way. Ervin: "There is Nagrebcan, Maria," Asia: She moved close to him and slipped her arm through his. And after a while she said quietly. Nicole: "You love Nagrebcan, don't you, Noel?" Asia: at that moment Ca Celin drove away hi-yi-ing to his horse loudly. At the bend of the camino real where the big duhat tree grew, he rattled the handle of his braided rattan whip against the spokes of the wheel. And Labang made an unusual sound. And Baldo found it funny. Ervin: "Hitch him to the cart, Baldo," Nicole: "Why does he make that sound? I have never heard the like of it." Ervin: "There is not another like it, I have yet to hear another bull call like Labang. In all the world there is no other bull like him." Nicole: "If you continue to talk about him like that, either I shall fall in love with him or become greatly jealous." Asia: leon and maria looked at each other and it seemed to me there was a world of laughter between them and in them. Baldo climbed into the cart over the wheel and Labang would have bolted, for he was always like that, but kept a firm hold on his rope. Leon started stacking the trunks at the back of the cart placing the smaller on top. Ervin: "Give me the rope, Baldo, Maria, sit down on the hay and hold on to anything." Cedric: okay. I will help you in securing the trunks Asia: as leon and baldo were working with the trunks, Maria sat up straight on the bottom of the cart, legs bent togther to one side, her skirts spread over them so that only the toes and heels of her shoes were visible. her eyes were on Leon's back. When Labang slowed down, Leon handed baldo the rope. Baldo knelt on the straw inside the cart and pulled on the rope until Labang was merely shuffling along, then made him turn around. Ervin: "What is it you have forgotten now, Baldo?" Asia: Leon didnt get any answer from baldo. he sun had sunk and down from the wooded sides of the Katayaghan hills shadows were stealing into the fields. High up overhead the sky burned with many slow fires. When baldo sent Labang down the deep cut that would take them to the dry bed of the Waig which could be used as a path to our place during the dry season, Leon laid a hand on baldos shoulder and said sternly: Ervin: "Who told you to drive through the fields tonight?" Asia: and again he received no response from baldo. Ervin: "Baldo, you fool, answer me before I lay the rope of Labang on you. Why do you follow the Wait instead of the camino real?" Cedric: "Father, he told me to follow the Waig tonight, Manong."

Ervin: "And I suppose Father also told you to hitch Labang to the cart and meet us with him instead of with Castano and the calesa." Asia: Without waiting for baldo to answer, he turned to maria and said, Ervin: "Maria, why do you think Father should do that, now? Have you ever seen so many stars before?" Nicole: "Look, Noel, yonder is our star!" Ervin: "I have been looking at it. Do you remember how I would tell you that when you want to see stars you must come to Nagrebcan?" Nicole: "Yes, Noel, Look at it, It is so many times bigger and brighter than it was at Ermita beach." Ervin: "The air here is clean, free of dust and smoke." Nicole: "So it is, Noel," Cedric: Ill just climb down, and light the lantern that hung from the cart between the wheels. Ervin: "Good boy, Baldo," Asia: Now the shadows took fright and did not crowd so near. Clumps of andadasi and arrais flashed into view and quickly disappeared as we passed by. Ahead, the elongated shadow of Labang bobbled up and down and swayed drunkenly from side to side, for the lantern rocked jerkily with the cart. Nicole: "Have we far to go yet, Noel?" Ervin: "Ask Baldo, we have been neglecting him." Nicole: "I am asking you, Baldo," Cedric: "Soon we will get out of the Wait and pass into the fields. After the fields is home--Manong." Nicole: "So near already." Asia: All the laughter seemed to have gone out of her. baldo waited for Leon to say something, but he was not saying anything. Suddenly leon broke out into song and the song was 'Sky Sown with Stars'---the same that he and Father used to sing. Cedric: I see youve taught her the song. She knows all the words to it. Ervin: why yes indeed baldo. "You miss the houses, and the cars, and the people and the noise, don't you Maria?" Nicole: "Yes, but in a different way. I am glad they are not here." Ervin: "---you seethe camino real curves around the foot of the Katayaghan hills and passes by our house. We drove through the fields because---but I'll be asking Father as soon as we get home." Nicole: Noel, Ervin: Yes, Maria? Nicole: "I am afraid. He may not like me." Ervin: "Does that worry you still, Maria From the way you talk, he might be an ogre, for all the world. Except when his leg that was wounded in the Revolution is troubling him, Father is the mildest-tempered, gentlest man I know." Asia: Soon enough they have arrived at their home and met the twins. Cedric: Hoy urong! Hoy Celin! Cams: hey baldo are you with leon and his wife? Ervin: Hey there sis! Where is mother? Camille: Mother is there inside waiting for your arrival. Asia: as leon and maria entered the house. His first words when he met his mother was .. Ervin: "Father... where is he?" Mother: "He is in his room upstairs His leg is bothering him again." Asia: Baldo came straight up to his fathers room to report of the days happenings Pat: "Did you meet anybody on the way?" Cedric: "No, Father Nobody passes through the Waig at night. She is very beautiful, Father." Pat: "Was she afraid of Labang? Cedric: "No, Father, she was not afraid. On the way She looked at the stars, Father. And Manong Leon sang." Pat: "What did he sing?" Cedric: "---Sky Sown with Stars... She sang with him."

Asia: moments passed and father didnt say anything not long after that he dismissed Baldo to go and water Labang. THE END
