For Christians seeking a way of thinking outside of strict dualities, this guide explores methods for letting go of division and living inthe present. Drawn from the Gospels, Jesus, Paul, and the greatChristian contemplatives, this examination reveals how many of thehidden truths of Christianity have been misunderstood or lost andhow to read them with the eyes of the mystics rather than interpret-ing them through rational thought. Filled with sayings, stories, quo-tations, and appeals to the heart, specific methods for identifyingdualistic thinking are presented with simple practices for strippingaway ego and the fear of dwelling in the present.

Excerpt:A friend of mine once brought back a stack of photos froma monastery he visited in Tibet. In every photo, there was ayoung monk seated on the ground and an older one seem-ingly circling around him. During the young novice’s train-ing, he is presented with every one of the Buddha’steachings. During that time, he has to name all of the diffi-cult and problematic consequences that would follow fromobserving this teaching, and all the good consequences. After each answer, the older monks clap their hands inapproval, and they smile at one another. Here is the clincher. The only way you can lose the conse-quentialist debate is to stop smiling! Obviously, this callsfor a letting go of the ego. Have you ever noticed that inany situation, when your ego is invested, afraid, or needy,it’s very hard to smile? But when the truth is not your per-sonal possession, it is very easy to smile.Remember, Jesus never said, “This is my commandment, thou shalt be right.” Jesus said, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life” (John 14:6). I think the intended effect of that often misused line is this: If Jesus is the Truth, thenyou probably aren’t!

A poetic and accessible introduction to the method of CenteringPrayer, this guide explains its origins, theological basis, and psy-chology by drawing on the writings of important Catholic figures, such as St. Teresa of Avila and St. John of the Cross, and signifi-cant texts, such as
The Cloud of Unknowing.
Describing the theo-logical basis for the Centering Prayer while staying rooted in theheart of a practice that is very personal and intimate, the studyexplores how harmful attitudes and beliefs about God can distorta positive relationship with the divine. With a careful balance of both Christian and Buddhist philosophy, the volume also discuss-es the psychological barriers and levels of resistance that contem-platives must face and bolsters seekers with supportive practiceslike
Lectio Divina

Excerpt:It is not our attention that needs adjusting, because attention issecondary in Centering Prayer. We are not attending to a par-ticular thought or object, or even to the sacred word as would be the case in a mantric kind of prayer. Our attention is a gen-eral and loving awareness of the presence of God. The actual work of Centering Prayer is consenting to God’s presence and in doing so letting go of the present moment with its psycho-logical content. If a thought or feeling stirs unconscious pro- grams along with their commentaries, then before we “get onthe boat,” we return to the sacred word. With time, patience, and many failures, we develop the habit of letting go of thoughts promptly—not by thinking about the fact that we arethinking, but simply by returning ever-so-gently to the sacred word. If you find yourself on a boat, just get off. There should be no self-recriminations, no sighs, no annoyance that youhave had a thought. Any such reflection is another thought, another boat.
