SPART*A Issues Statement Regarding Texas Military ForcesTurning Away Same Sex Spouses For DEERS Enrollment
Washington, D.C., September 3, 2013
Our National Guard brothers and sisters have madesacrifices in Iraq, Afghanistan, and in service during natural disasters and state emergencies. Therecent decision by Texas Military Forces (TXMF) to redirect its state service members withsame-sex spouses to federal installations for enrollment in DEERS (Defense EnrollmentEligibility Reporting System) isn't a mere inconvenience, it is a blatant act of state-sanctioneddiscrimination against those who serve and their families. SPART*A Co-Chair Jeremy Johnsonsaid this problem must be resolved immediately."The Department of Defense no longer discriminates against same-sex military families andinstead embraces them as an important part of the support structure for uniformed members. Thisannouncement by Texas Military Forces makes clear that that they are either unwilling or incapable of doing the same. If that is the case, the Department of Defense must ensure that thereis no question about the rights of same-sex military families and their ability to access the benefits to which they are entitled."SPART*A calls upon the DOD to ensure Texas and all states with discriminatory laws regardingsame-sex marriage honor the service and sacrifice of all military families by giving them equalaccess to all DEERS enrollment facilities.
