 The Aloha Foundation2008 Annual Report

I
have discovered that if you want to increase the pace of your life, just becomePresident of The Aloha Foundation Board of Trustees. It was a little more thanthree years ago that I took over the helm of the Board and now, suddenly, it’sover. What a ride! Each year was memorable, but in 2008 the momentum seemed to build exponen-tially, culminating in a series of outstanding achievements. The residential campsenjoyed record attendance, and Ohana Camp opened after Herculean efforts led byWin Ameden, Andy Williams and, of course, Jim Zien. The Centennial Campaignclosed at year-end with resounding success, as you will read later in this report. Byway of perspective, we raised FIVE TIMES as many dollars as in our previous capitalcampaign. It is truly humbling to reflect on the generosity of our constituents andthe superlative efforts staff and trustees made to reach out and connect.Congratulations to all!On the policy front, trustee Mark Zvonkovic led a behind-the-scenes effort torevise and adopt governance documents and practices that comply with recentchanges in federal laws concerning corporate oversight. He also drafted guidelinesfor modernizing our Board committees and meeting procedures. Kudos to Mark notonly for seeing the need for these changes, but also for the countless hours he devot-ed to their implementation. I also want to thank longtime Board members JamesBone and Jo Ann Silverstein for their many years of service. Both retired as trusteesin 2008, and they already are missed. It has been a singular honor for me to have served as President of the Board. Iappreciated the opportunity and I want to thank my fellow Trustees for their encour-agement, wisdom and expertise. In addition, the many outstanding members of theFoundation staff have provided remarkable support and assistance. Thank you all. Finally, I’m pleased to turn the role of Board President over to Sally Reid, who weall know is uniquely qualified to provide leadership and direction to the Foundationgoing forward.Bob WhitePresident, Board of Trustees2005-2008

hank you, Bob,for that vote of confidence. I am notentirely sure what uniquelyqualifies me to lead theFoundation in what promisesto be interesting times, but Iknow that as a community andan organization we are strong. Just look at the commitmentthe Aloha family demonstrated in supporting our enor-mously successful Centennial Campaign. Look at MarkZvonkovic’s project to bring our governance practices andpolicies into the 21stCentury—a labor of love made allthe more remarkable by his success in melding modern“best practices” with the Foundation’s historic culture of close collaboration between Trustees and management. This is an organization prepared to meet the challengesof our next 100 years. But when I think about the Foundation and howproud I am to lead it, I don’t focus on fundraising, orgovernance, or dwell on economic uncertainties. I thinkabout “those green-clad hills,” the safe haven they haveprovided to children for decades—in good times andbad—and the unique opportunity for growth and joythat they have afforded us, our children and our grand-children.I close my eyes, smell the smoke from the campfireand hear the voices singing of Aloha. And then I know:whatever the challenges ahead, I do not have to meetthem alone; we will meet them together, as we alwayshave. That’s the Aloha way.Sally ReidPresident, Board of Trustees 2008–2010
I
t’s inevitable in an annualreport to view the yearpast through the lens of the present. Looking back at 2008from the vantage of early 2009, wecan see clearly now that The AlohaFoundation reached new plateausof activity in several dimensions ata critical time in our community’sdistinguished history. How fortunate we are to have topped up theCentennial Capital Campaign as the national economybegan running on empty. How good it is that we hostedmore campers in 2008 than we’ve seen in decades, estab-lishing a strong position in these chilly economic windsfor weathering possible swings in enrollment. Where elsecould financially buffeted families find a little help tokeep their children coming to camp, than right among us,through the generosity of alumni who continue to havemeans to give the gift of summer, and readily do? What awonder that we put the finishing touches on our fine newfamily camp just in time to make simple, natural andaffordable vacations available to mom, dad, the kids, acouple of grandparents, and a few aunts, uncles andcousins, pooling their resources. All these benefits accrue to the Alohas through ourstrength as a community enriched by diversity in all itsforms and meanings. This 2008 Annual Report explores
Our Community, Ourselves
from a variety of points of view: the diverse people we serve, the varieties of experi-ence we provide, the means we offer to make themaccessible to all, and the benefits they deliver to everyone.I hope you will enjoy reading these pages for the stories of community they tell, as well as the financial indicatorsthey present of our fundamentally hale condition, and thethanks they extend to all who support us in being so. Jim ZienExecutive Director
