The Independent Inquiry into sexual harassment at the University of Witwatersrand herebysubmits its final report. The findings, recommendations and conclusions are contained inthis report.The members of the Inquiry have had absolute cooperation from all involved in thisprocess. The University Community as a whole has taken a unique and unprecedentedinvestigation. The inquiry has brought us into contact with deep sadness but we concludewith hope for effective change.We applaud the courage of the students and staff who told us their stories and contributeddirectly and indirectly to our recommendations.
Terms of Reference
The terms of reference of the Inquiry require the Committee to establish:1)
Whether sexual harassment and quid pro quo relationships are common place atthe
University of Witwatersrand’s ("
Whether staff and students are aware of the policy and procedures on sexualharassment and whether they feel comfortable reporting sexual harassmentincidents; and3)
Whether the process of addressing incidents of sexual harassment at theUniversity (this includes the manner in which incidents of sexual harassment arereported and investigated) is fair, robust, effective and sensitive.
