This book chronicles a real-life David and Goliath success story. The "giant"was a multi-national corporation; the "David" was a small group of Maine citizens in the little towns of Newfield and Shapleigh, whose fierce determination stopped that corporation from extracting water from beneath their communities, as well as threatening other waterways and a wildlife refuge. At issue were not only preservation of an aquifer, but the principal that control of a resource so critical for all forms of life should not be sold as a commodity for private profit. Perhaps more importantly, this lively book stands as testimony to the enduring power of democracy in Maine. Here, the people's will, it reveals, can still prevail.
