For centuries electricity has been a challenge to scientists. They have longknown that it exists, and have discovered how to generate it on a large scale, but find it difficult to explain exactly what electricity is.Where did it all begin?Around 600 BC Greeks found that by rubbing an 'electron' (a hard Fossilisedresin that today is known as Amber) against a fur cloth, it would attractparticles of straw. This strange effect remained a mystery for over 2000 years, until, around AD 1600, Dr William Gilbert investigated the reactions of amberand magnets and first recorded the word 'Electric' in a report on the theory of magnetism.Benjamin FranklinFranklin was an American writer, publisher, scientist and diplomat, who helpedto draw up the famous Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution. In1752 Franklin proved that lightning and the spark from amber were one and thesame thing. The story of this famous milestone is a familiar one, in whichFranklin fastened an iron spike to a silken kite, which he flew during athunderstorm, while holding the end of the kite string by an iron key. Whenlightening flashed, a tiny spark jumped from the key to his wrist. Theexperiment proved Franklin's theory, but was extremely dangerous - He couldeasily have been killed.

Electricity completely surrounds us -- For most of us, modernlife would be impossible without it. Here are just a fewexamples:Throughout your house, you probably findelectrical outlets where you can plug in all sorts of electrical appliances. Most portable devices containbatteries, which producevarying amounts of electricity depending on their size.During a thunderstorm, there are huge bolts of electricitycalledlightningthat shoot down from the sky.On a much smaller scale, you can get a shock fromstatic electricityon dry winter days.It is easy to create electricity fromsunlightusing asolar cell; or you can create electricity from the chemical energy inhydrogen and oxygen using afuel cell.So what is this mysterious stuff that we call electricity? Wheredoes it come from, and why is it able to do so many differentthings?.
