hat fun would it be tolearn a new sport, im-mediately form yourteam and play a tourna-ment in a month’s time? That’sthe spirit of Ultimate Frisbee—a worldwide sought after sportthat has caught the craze of Namma Chennai youngsters forthe last two years. The ChennaiUltimate Club will be organising a tournament—Agni Nakshatrafor newbie on June 27 and 28 atBesant Nagar beach.Tournament coordinator andexperienced player Lekhamith-ra Shanmugam says, “We want-ed to popularise the sport andincrease the number of peopleplaying it and hence this tour-nament was organised. Our ex-perienced players brought in atleast fifty newbies for the train-ing camps."There are also teams fromcolleges—KRMMC and Cres-cent College of Engineering andHindustan Engineering College.But the common aspect is thatall of them are genuinely inter-ested. In a week’s time Lekha-mitra and her teams havemanaged to form ten teams forthe tournament. Ajay John whois training a team from ValmikiNagar says, “Unlike other com-plicated sports, this is simpleand only needs coordinationbetween players. New playershave picked up the skills very fast and all the players are genu-inely interested in the game.They do stand a chance of win-ning the game.”The scorching heat has notdeterred these youngsters fromlearning this sport. One can see40 enthusiastic energeticplayers being trained on theforehand throw, backhandthrow and cuts at the ValmikiNagar beach every morning andat the Elliots beach, Besant Na-gar on Saturday evenings.Megha Radhakrishnan (23) whohas been playing the game fortwo months says, “Initially ittook few days to get the tech-nicalities, but in a month’s time we got the feel of the game andit generates a lot of positiveenergy. We formed our teamtwo weeks back and we hope tohave a perfect chemistry by thetournament.”
