An army in the broadest sense, is the land-basedarmed forces of a nation. It may also include otherbranches of the military such as an air force.Within a national military force, the word Armymay also mean a field army, which is anoperational formation, usually made up of one ormore corps.The current largest army in the world by numberof active troops is the People's Liberation Army of China with 2,250,000 active troops and 800,000reserve personnel.Western armies are usually subdivided as follows:Corps: A Corps usually consists of two or moreDivisions and is commanded by a LieutenantGeneral.Division: Each division is commanded by a MajorGeneral, and usually holds three Brigadesincluding infantry, artillery, engineers andcommunications units in addition to logistics(supply and service) support to sustainindependent action. Except for the Divisionsoperating in the mountains, all the Divisions haveat least one armored unit, some have even moredepending upon their functionality.
