Lab 2. Forced Oscillation, Multiple degrees of Freedom and State Space Representation Provide all screenshots, graphs and workings, explanations as necessary to support your answer the following questions in a report format. Part 1. Forced Oscillation. Consider a Spring / Mass / Damper system, with the mass subjected to an oscillating force, as shown below. k is the spring constant, c is the damping coefficient, is the amplitude of the driving force and is the angular frequency of the driving force.

Q1. Derive the equations governing the motion of the system. Q2. Use Xcos to diagram the system. Q3. Generate test vectors to simulate the system. Use lab 1 as a guideline to generate non-trivial scenarios. Q4. Write down the analytical solution found in your lecture notes. (Chapter 3 part 1) Q5. Compare with the numerical simulation. What assumptions are made in the analytical solution?

Part 2. Multiple degrees of Freedom Here we will attempt to model a system with 2 degrees of freedom. Consider 2 masses, m and 2m connected with springs of spring constant k. The free body diagram is included below as a reference.

Q6. Derive the equations governing the motion of the system. Q7. Use Xcos to diagram the system. Q8. In the simulation context, set the value of m=1 and k=1. Simulate the System Q9. For the initial conditions of m and 2m, experiment with the masses m and 2m pulled in the same direction, and in opposite directions. Investigate the effect of magnitude and direction of the initial displacements. What can you conclude? Q10. Does the period of the oscillation of the masses vary with the magnitude of the displacements? Q11. Does the amplitude of the oscillation of the masses coincide with the initial displacement? Suggest a relationship between the oscillation of the masses.

Part 3 Linear State Space Representation (Optional / Bonus) What if the system has many degrees of freedom? We can represent it compactly using State Space Representation.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/State_space_representation for more information. Q12 Model Part 1 and Part 2 using State space representation. Use the CLSS block above. Derive the matrices A, B, C, D for each part. Q13 Model the 3DOF spring mass system below in Xcos using the CLSS block above.

The End.
