September 8, 2013 - 23rd Sunday In Ordinary Time|3
From the Pastor:Stewardship, A Disciple’s Response
"’What are you looking for?’ Jesus asks (two of John’sdisciples). ‘Rabbi,’ they say, ‘Where are you staying?’ ‘Come and you will see.’ They spend the day with him, enthralled by his words and by the power of his per-sonality… The next day, encountering Philip, Jesus says‘Follow Me.’” (See John 1:35-50)
As you may already know, twenty students from bothour parish community and parishes around SouthernCalifornia have answered the call to begin their studies atthe Franciscan School of Theology at Old Mission San LuisRey. Last year, over 628 students and 71 teachers mettogether in our Religious Educa
on programs to spend
me ge
ng to know and love the Lord. Soon the halls of the parish and the Old Mission will
ll with people -- chil-dren, teens, young people, adults and seniors who aredoing something amazingly countercultural. They areanswering Jesus' call to discipleship. They are answeringhis invita
on to come and know him be
er.When I re
ect on Jesus' call to discipleship in my life, Irealize that, when my parents and my family, my teach-ers and mentors were calling me to do be
er, to sharemy gi
s with others, to try to live as Christ lived, it wasactually God calling me through all these people. I wasconstantly being called and challenged to follow Christ inbig ways and small ways. As an adult, I've learned thatthis call is the essence of Stewardship. We hear God's calland we do something to respond to it. We might chooseto learn more by reading the bible. Or spend
me inprayer. Or go to Mass. Or give our
me in service tosomeone else. Or serve lunch to homeless people. What-ever we choose to do, day in and day out, in our dailylives, that response is rooted in the challenge of being adisciple of Jesus.Over the next few weeks, I'd like to take this oppor-tunity to have a conversa
on with you about Steward-ship. Stewardship always begins with a radical call, to bea disciple of Jesus. It's the next thing we are moved todo, the response that comes right a
er the thought --"Yes, Lord. I do believe. I want to come and follow you."Like James and John, Peter and Andrew, Mary andMartha, Paul, St. Francis, and Mother Teresa, how werespond to the call to follow Christ is unique for eachperson. Some preach. Some care for the poor and thedying. What will your response be? Have you ever heardor felt Jesus calling?Let us all con
nue to pray for each other, our parishand our country.God bless,Fr. David Gaa, OFMPastor
The Call -- the Disciple's Voca
on
The voca
ons of all Chris
ans have elements in common. One of these voca
ons is the call to be a disciple. In fact, wemight say that to be a disciple – to follow Christ and try tolive His life as our own – is the common voca
on of all Chris-
ans; discipleship in this sense is Chris
an life.
Cateche

Opening the Door of Faith
This year, the United States Conference of CatholicBishops invites all Catholics to celebrate Cateche

September 15, 2013.
This year’s theme is
"Open the Door of Faith."
Those serving as teachers, catechists, aides and retreat leaders are invited to the

to be blessed andcommissioned for their ministry.Cateche
cal Sunday is a wonderful opportunity tore
ect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Bap
sm, in handing on their faith in Jesus Christ and be-ing a witness to the Gospel. With thanksgiving for thosewho hand on the faith as witness to the Gospel of JesusChrist, we pray that our parish family will always beblessed with those who have responded to the call toshare in Christ’s prophe
c mission as catechists. May wetoo be open to the universal call to service that Christaddresses to all of his disciples, contribu
ng our gi
s tothe communion of faith, the Church. For more informa
