When you look at the market, there isn’t much competitionfor the 3 Skypephone except for maybe the Google enabled phone by HTC touch known as‘dream’ which is due to released in November later this year. There are many other companiesoffering services based on VoIP like Venon, Budgetsip, VoIP phone etc but they are all computer based i.e., users need a pc to make calls over the internet, it maybe a pc to pc call or a pc tonormal phone call. These services however don’t come free of cost. Then there are the chatclients like yahoo messenger and Google talk which provide free VoIP based voice chat service.Technically there isn’t much difference in the way Skype or Yahoo/Google voice chat works asall three works on the same VoIP principle. But again these clients also work on a pc. Finally wehave the Skype enabled Wi-Fi phones (Netgear and Belkin) which enables its users to connect toSkype from the phone much like the 3 Skypephone itself but having to be inside a Wi-Fi network in order to connect to Skype comes as a drawback for these phones. The advantages 3Skypephone has over other VoIP based services are as follows
1.
The Skype client works on a phone which you can carry around with you and you don’thave to be in front of a computer to use VoIP.
2.
It uses a 3G spectrum which essentially means more bandwidth for the Skype clientreducing latency issues to a minimum and provides more clarity on voice sessions (Thisis exactly the reason why Skype is not a popular add-on feature for normal GPRS enabled phones). The Skype client is available on a variety of products likePlay station portable from Sony, Philips cordless phones, Nokia internet tablet and windowsmobile devise. But none of these products are cell phones which makes the 3 Skypephone a better option.
