Are You EatingGRAS?
Do you look at the labels of any processedfood and not know what certain ingredientsare? Are you aware that the list you arereading is not telling you everything that isadded to the package? Processed foods areproducts that are produced or manufactured, come conveniently packaged in a can, plastic, etc., it keeps forever, instant results, artificially flavored (or added “natural”flavor), always the same, dull, bland, an noconnection to land or culture. What are missing from some of theingredient lists are ingredients that areGRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe). Thismeans that the FDA has allowed theseingredients of that compound not to be listedon food labels. The manufacturers do theirown research on the safety of their productsand you can now see that there are manyingredients that may not be as safe as youmay believe.Consider this list of what some may call“natural” strawberry flavor as an ingredient:
Amyl Acetate, amyl butyrate, amyl valerate, anethol, anysyl formate, benzyl acetate, benzylaisobutyrate, butyric acid, cinnamylisobutyrate, cinnamyl valerate, cognacessential oil,

diacetyl, dipropyl ketone, ethylbutyrate, ethyl cinnamate, ethyl heptanoate, ethyl lactate, ethyl methylphenylglycidate, ethyl nitrate, ethyl propionate, ethyl valerbate, heliotropin, hydroxyphrenyl-2butanone (10%solution in alcohol), a-ionone, isobutylanthranilate, isobutyl butrate, lemon essentialoil, maltol, 4-methylacetophenone, methylanthranilate, methyl benzoate, methylcinnamate, methyl heptine carbonate, methylnaphthyl ketone, methyl salicylate, mintessential oil, neroli essential oil, nerolin, neryisobutyrate, orris butter, phenethyl alchohol, rose, rum ether, y-undecalactone, vanilin, andsolvent
Does that sound at all “natural” to you? Here are some Points on Processed Foods.

If you can’t pronounce the name of theingredient, don’t eat it – your liverwon’t like it.

The more money that is spent tomarket a food product, the worse itgenerally is for you.

Never eat anything with“hydrogenated” or “partiallyhydrogenated” oils in it

The longer the shelf-life, the worse itis likely to be for you. (The exceptionto this are seeds, nuts, naturally driedfruits, high-quality jerky and somelacto-fermented foods.)

If it wasn’t here 10,000 years ago, don’t eat it.

If it won’t keep your pet alive, don’teat it.

Avoid all fortified or enriched foods. These are foods that have been brokendown and damaged so much that themanufactures have to put vitamins andminerals back into them

Avoid processed foods in generalStudies show that many diseases are dietrelated. You can improve your health andvitality by eating fresh organic produce, high quality meats and fish, and by avoidingprocessed foods.
