Utility-connected installations can be set up either to use all poweron site, supplementing your electrical use with utility power asneeded, or to eed excess production back onto the grid in a netmetered arrangement. Dierent connection standards and electricalsaety considerations apply to each option.United States Federal law (specifcally, the Public Utility RegulatoryPolicies Act o 1978, or PURPA) requires utilities to connect with andpurchase power rom small wind energy systems. Many utilities oer“net metering,” allowing the excess energy rom a small wind system atany given time to spin your meter backwards at ull retail value or allenergy produced. Your frst step will be to contact your utility and askor an “interconnection agreement”. This is a contract with your utilityto use their meter and allows you to run excess power into the grid.

This guide is intended as an overview or the consumer who wantsto understand the process o permitting and connection or a utility-connected wind generator. People have been connecting renewableenergy systems into their electric grid or many years. This type osystem does not require batteries as the electric grid will store yourenergy when excess is produced. Additionally, your home will still bepowered by the utility when the wind system is not producing power.Recent advances in technology have allowed more ease and simplic-ity in use o utility connected small wind systems. Southwest Wind-power encourages you to work closely with a Southwest Windpowerauthorized dealer to help you with all aspects o your installationincluding permitting and interconnection. Many utilities have a simple interconnection agreement or smallsel-generators. I they do not have one, a sample interconnectionapplication orm is available at: www.skystreamenergy.com. You maywish to oer this as a guide or them to develop an interconnectionagreementInterconnection agreements vary rom each utility or co-op, but allwill most likely require specifc saety inormation about the windgenerator and should outline the type o net-metering agreementyou have with them. Southwest Windpower products that connectto the grid are UL listed and comply with anti-islanding laws thatrequire the system to shut down in the even the electric grid goesdown. You may be the frst person within your utility asking or aninterconnection agreement or small wind. It is advised that you workwith your Southwest Windpower authorized dealer to ensure youhave the support you need should questions arise. Most utilities will require an on-site inspection at the completion oinstall. By developing your relationship with the utility early, you willbe ready at the time o install to “Flip the Switch.”Just as when you detmermine i your site is right or a wind genera-tor (see our Siting Guide at www.skystreamenergy.com), SouthwestWindpower wants to ensure that wind is right or you. Please takethe time to review all aspects o your installation, including permittingand utility connection with your dealer prior to purchase. This guide will start you on the road to successully permitting andinterconnecting your Skystream in FOUR easy steps:
1.
Interconnection with utility
.
Apply or a permit
3.
Tell your neighbors
4.
Sign up or Incentives (where applicable)

But i you live in an agricultural area wherecrop dusting is common or within 20,000 eet o an airport or sea-plane base, you should review regulations or air trafc notifcation.Unlike most wind generators that produce power at lower voltages, the Skystream’s 220-250 VAC output allows you to locate theturbine urther away rom the circuit breaker without the expenseo a larger wire. Sample electrical drawings and PE calculations areprovided in the Skystream manual at www.skystreamenergy.com.

 Asking about sound level limits
How you ask about noise ordinances may be sensitive.I you are installing a Skystream you should stress thatthe Skystream is designed to be nearly silent, but youare only trying to cover all possible questions in theapplication process.
