This week, blogger El The Man takes us to Penang Streetfor some interesting Indian snacks.

THE Madras New Woodlands Vegetarian Restaurant is one of the better vegetarian restaurants in Penang Street. But what’sso special about this place, you ask? It’s because you may notbe able to find some of the items on their menu elsewhere inPenang. They have the Pani Puri, Shev Puri, Bhel Puri and afew other snacks.Pani Puri literally means “Water in a Crispy Fried Dough”.Pani is a Hindi word for water, and puri is somewhat like afried chapati. It’s a hollow, crunchy shell stuffed with specialspicy potato-based filling and dipped in masala water to fill upthe puri. The stuffing is prepared separately and a small hole ismade on the top at the centre of the puri to insert thepotato-based filling into the dough-shell.When you get this stuffed dough, you either dip it in themasala water, or just pour the masala water into the puri’s holeusing a spoon and then enjoy it.The restaurant prepares the snacks right outside therestaurant’s doors. It serves as a good notice to passers-byabout the availability of the snacks.Nevertheless, the snacks are only served on weekends (Fridaysto Sundays) and from evening onwards.For beginners, perhaps you should try the Dahi Puri as it issweet. The Pani Puri has a watery spicy taste. These arepopular Indian snacks that have not been picked up here.Generally, those who have been to India are much morefamiliar with these types of snacks.Woodlands also serves usual fare like Chenna Bhatura whichis chick peas with fluffed bread, tosai and other hearty Indianmeals. My wife says that the tosai is also not to be missed.Madras New Woodlands Vegetarian Restaurant is at No.60,Penang Street, Penang. Opening hours: 8.30am to 10pm.
