Lo que inici como la primera vitrina para las residencias y propiedades ms lujosas del mercado inmobiliario costarricense es, en la actualidad, una publicacin de estilo de vida lder para quienes buscan exclusivamente lo mejor. Para la ocasin, nos dimos a la tarea de seleccionar 50 proyectos edificaciones residenciales o comerciales publicados con anterioridad en la revista. Estas construcciones destacan por su diseo arquitectnico, emplazamiento o propuesta esttica. El resultado final nos da una mezcla de influencias y estilos, y de usos y destinos, que refleja el viaje comprendido en estas 50 ediciones y que podr disfrutar en la pgina 54. A lo largo de estos aos, el contenido editorial de Casa Galera ha sido rico y variado, algo que qued en evidencia tras el repaso realizado en nuestro archivo. Un balance entre actualidad e informaciones atemporales ha sido la constante, pues procuramos alcanzar siempre el objetivo de generar un valor a nuestros lectores por medio de una buena escogencia de temas y un estricto manejo esttico. Esta introspeccin no hace ms que motivarnos a seguir adelante, no por 50 ediciones ms, sino por cientos ms. What started as the first showcase for the most luxurious homes and properties in Costa Rican real estate market is, today, a publication of leading lifestyle for those seeking the best. For the occasion, we took on the task of choosing 50 projects (residential or commercial buildings) that have been previously published in the magazine. These buildings stand out from the rest for their architectural design, location or aesthetic proposal. The end result gives us a mix of influences and styles, uses and purposes that reflect the journey undertaken throughout these 50 issues, which you can enjoy on page 54. Throughout these years, the editorial content of Casa Galera has been rich and varied; these aspects were evident after the review conducted in our archive. The balance between timeless news and current information has been constant, as we have always strove to achieve the objective of creating value to our readers through a good choice of topics and a strict management of the aesthetics. This journey has taken us through hundreds of environments around the world. We have experienced products and services for demanding consumers. Our projects and professionals are gaining attention and are leading us to analyze global trends for us to interpret in accordance to our local reality. This introspection motivates us to keep going, not for 50 editions more, but for hundreds of them. Marco Leiva, chef y cofundador del local, promete que su men fundamentado en el concepto farm to table se adaptar a lo que su apetito y humor le pidan. Le consultamos al cliente qu quiere para que pueda identificar el paladar y, de esta manera, pedir lo que realmente desea: sea algo cido, graso, tostado siempre podemos ofrecerle un plato para sacarle el antojo. Las personas somos moody y, dependiendo de eso y de la hora del da, no podemos recomendar lo mismo, explic Leiva. La comunicacin con el mesero, que transforma todo el restaurante a sus deseos y solicitudes, es parte de la vivencia Furca. Sienta la libertad de expresarse y su interlocutor escuchar muy de cerca y le transmitir las texturas, olores y sabores que experimentar con el platillo sugerido. La variada oferta de Furca se basa en el valor de sus productos por lo que son: sin trabajarlos dems, presentndolos en su mxima y ms simple expresin. Se compone de recetas con ingredientes locales y forneos; entre estas, destacan las aves de caza (faisn, perdiz y pato), la variedad de quesos 100 % nacionales y la exquisita seleccin de cortes de carne. We ask our customer what he or she would like, in order to identify their tastes and help them order what they really want: whether its acidic, oil-based, toastedwe can always offer something to curb a craving. People are moody, and depending on their mood and the time of day, we recommend something different, explained Leiva. Communication with the waiter, which transforms the whole restaurant to respond to your wishes and desire, is part of the Furca experience. Feel free to express yourself and the waiter will listen closely and describe the textures, smells and flavors that you will experience with the suggested dish. Furcas variety is based on the value of its products for what they are: without overworking them, presenting them in their best state and most simple arrangement. The restaurant includes recipes with local and imported ingredients, especially fowl (pheasant, partridge and duck), a variety of domestic cheeses and an exquisite selection of cuts of beef.

una experiencia irrepetible A Once-in-a-lifetime Experience

The first Starbucks in Europe opened in the vault of the historic Amsterdamsche Bank, an iconic building in the famous Rembrandt Plaza in Amsterdam. Measuring 430 square meters, it is the companys largest space in Europe. Its theatrical spaciousness offers a new experience to taste an inseparable equation: innovation in coffee, accompanying food and the design that surrounds you. This magnificent space takes Starbucks design strategy to the next level. It gives clients a chance to discover and connect with coffee and the local community. Conceptualized as a theatrical space with a 17-meter coffee bar its big stage its multiple levels act as different spaces for local bands, poetry readings and artistic activities. All of this is available to you while you taste some of the best coffees. More than 35 local artists and craftsmen transformed the vault into an architectural masterpiece under the direction of Liz Muller, the companys Design Director and manager of three conceptual designs at stores that Starbucks opened in its city of origin: Seattle. Like those other shops, The Bank is pure design and was built with sustainable materials and local accents. In addition to a mural representative of the history of Dutch coffee sellers covering one of the walls, floor to ceiling, the shops most remarkable characteristic is its sculptured ceiling made from 1,875 handcrafted blocks. In the end, and its most important aspect, the shop acts as a laboratory to taste exclusive coffees with innovative blends and new foods.

La primera tienda conceptual de Starbucks en Europa abri sus puertas en la bveda del histrico Amsterdamsche Bank, un edificio icnico en la famosa Plaza Rembrandt, en msterdam. Con 430 metros cuadrados, es el establecimiento europeo ms amplio de la compaa. Su espacialidad teatral ofrece una nueva experiencia para saborear una frmula inseparable: innovacin en el caf, en la comida que lo acompaa y en el diseo que cobija cada momento. Este magnfico espacio lleva la estrategia de diseo de Starbucks al siguiente nivel. Da a sus clientes la oportunidad de descubrir, interactuar y conectarse con el caf y la comunidad local. Una barra de caf de 17 metros de largo se convierte en un gran escenario y sus mltiples niveles funcionan como distintos espacios para bandas locales, lecturas de poesa y actividades artsticas. Todo sucede mientras usted degusta el ms esplndido de los cafs. Ms de 35 artistas locales y artesanos transformaron la bveda en una pieza maestra de arquitectura bajo la direccin de Liz Muller, directora de diseo de la empresa y encargada de los tres locales conceptuales que Starbucks ya haba abierto en su ciudad natal, Seattle. Como esos otros locales, The Bank es puro diseo y fue construido con materiales sostenibles y acentos locales. Adems del mural representativo de la historia de los comerciantes holandeses de caf, que cubre una de las paredes de piso a cielo, su caracterstica ms llamativa es el cielo escultural fabricado a partir de 1.875 bloques cortados a mano. Starbucks The Bank funciona, finalmente, como un laboratorio para degustar cafs exclusivos, con innovadoras mezclas y acompaados de nuevos conceptos de comida.

El arte deja su huella en Avenida Escaz Una estructura de bronce de ms de una tonelada y cuatro metros de longitud lleg a Avenida Escaz para dejar su impronta. Se trata de la obra Big Foot del artista Idan Zareski, representado por Klaus Steinmetz Arte Contemporneo y adquirida por Portafolio Inmobiliario S.A., desarrolladores de este proyecto urbanstico. La obra fue develada el pasado 9 de febrero y con ella se fortalece uno de los grandes objetivos de Avenida Escaz: dar un lugar preponderante al arte. Arts Leaves its Footprint on Avenida Escazu A bronze sculpture weighing more than a ton and measuring four meters long has arrived at Avenida Escazu to leave its footprint: it is Big Foot by Idan Zareski, represented by Klaus Steinmetz Arte Contemporneo. It was acquired by Portafolio Inmobiliario S.A., developers of this urban project. El arquitecto Joan Puigcorb decidi romper con los paradigmas de Wappa Fashion Boutique con un local sin puertas ni vitrinas. Un contenedor vaco, perfecto para circular entre piezas exhibidas en 360 grados. Mi objetivo era generar un espacio donde comprar fuera una accin diferente, explic Puigcorb, de la firma Costa Rica Natural Design. Como arquitecto, lo que intento es establecer un marco donde se haga la compra. El tamao de la tienda, en este caso, es lo que capta la atencin. La ausencia de fachada es un reclamo para que entres y puedas percibir el detalle de cada una de las piezas.
Architect Joan Puigcorbe decided to break with tradition with Wappa Fashion Boutique by creating a space without doors or window displays and using an empty container, perfect for 360-degree circulation among exhibited clothing. My goal was to create a space for shopping that was out of the ordinary, explained Puigcorbe, from Costa Rica Natural Design. As an architect, what I try to do is create a frame, in which you can shop. In this case, the size of the store is what captures your attention. The lack of an entrance is a tactic to get you to come in and observe the details of each piece.

El arquitecto reconoci que los malls, en Costa Rica, reemplazan los espacios pblicos ausentes. Partiendo de esta realidad, integr el local al mall; lo convirti en parte de ese recorrido, de ese bosque inexistente, representado por el centro comercial. Es importante el involucramiento total de los propietarios, quienes confiaron y tuvieron la valenta y coraje necesarios para transformar lo que ellos ya tienen (en otros locales de Wappa) y hacer algo completamente diferente, admiti Puigcorb. El diseo del establecimiento apela al realce de la ropa. Se dejaron a un lado los percheros tradicionales que ocultan las prendas una detrs de otra. En su lugar, se utilizan estructuras colgantes, a la altura del cliente, que permiten tocar, ver y detallar cada look. La ropa se alterna con pequeas repisas, colocadas estratgicamente, que exhiben zapatos y accesorios para acompaar. El rgido uso del blanco y el negro en el espacio incluyendo los ondulantes perfiles de hierro, la cermica blanca y porcelana negra del piso junto a la iluminacin con fluorescentes brinda el entorno ideal para los colores de la ropa que, como regla general, se cambia cada dos o tres das por otro tono fijo. Desde el punto de vista del cliente, como (Wappa) vende moda y sta cambia, voy constantemente a visitar la tienda porque siempre luce diferente. Si ese contenedor tiene un aspecto interesante y recorrerlo me activa los sentidos, el espacio trasciende el acto de la compra, aadi Puigcorb.
The Architect recognized that Costa Ricas malls replace missing public spaces. Based on that reality, she incorporated the store into the mall, making it part of the visit to this non-existent forest that is represented by the shopping center. The complete involvement of owners who trusted and had the courage necessary to take what they had (in other Wappa stores) and do something completely different is important, admitted Puigcorbe. The stores design appeals to the splendor of the clothing. Traditional stands that hide clothes one behind the other were not used. Instead, they use hanging structures at the customers height that allows them to touch and see every look. Clothing is separated by strategically hung small shelves in the store to display shoes and accessories. The strict use of white and black in the space including the wavy iron silhouettes, the black and white porcelain floor tiles, together with florescent lighting - creates an ideal space for the single color of clothing, which is generally changed out every two or three days. Since (Wappa) sells fashion, which always changes, as a customer I am going to visit the store frequently because it always has something new. If the container is interesting and, somehow, walking around it is going to be life-changing and awaken my senses, then the space transcends the simple act of shopping, added Puigcorbe.

Lo que generar la compra es una mezcla de la audacia de la vendedora y la curiosidad de quien ingrese al establecimiento. As, se crea una nueva relacin entre la clientela y el producto. El que adquiere la ropa o el accesorio es protagonista, real y vivo, de su propia decisin. Pudo palpar el material, percibir los pliegues y bordados, consultar acerca de ms colores para, finalmente, adquirir la pieza. El espacio es muy contundente. Es neutro en cuanto al color; por eso, acepta el cambio de tonalidades de la moda. En resumen, el buen gusto y la calidad permanecen. Los colores varan, profundiz el arquitecto.
The Wappa store in Plaza Lincoln is radically different from its competition: it does not show everything in a window display, rather it makes suggestions. It captures your attention and creates curiosity with just one color (our reflection, when visiting the store on a day when all clothing was red, we asked, is it available in blue?). The store does not have doors; rather, shoppers circulate in directly from the malls walkways.

What generates purchases is a mix of the salespersons audacity and the shoppers curiosity. The store creates a new relationship between its customers and products. The person who buys the clothing or the accessory is the protagonist, real and alive, of his or her own decision. She touched the fabric, glanced at the pleats and stitching, asked about other colors, and finally, bought the item. The space is very convincing. Its neutral in terms of color, thereby accepting the changing colors of fashion. Basically, good taste and quality permeate the space, while colors vary, added the Architect.

Bajo la filosofa de diseo de Costa Rica Natural Design, la tienda Wappa consigue activar los sentidos y hacer que la visita sea mucho ms rica. Based on the design philosophy promoted by Costa Rica Natural Design, the Wappa store seeks to activate the senses and make the visit richer. In this store, the emptiness is what represents Costa Rica Natural Design. This sensation in the container, organic and winding, speaks to what will happen inside, said Puigcorbe. Joan Puigcorb is an architect, graduate of the Universidad Politcnica de Barcelona. She founded PAAS puigcorb arquitectes associats and has done a variety projects, including libraries, schools, office buildings, group and individual residences, remodeling, urban design and furniture design. In the country she founded Costa Rica Natural Design in 2008, a company focused on the design, construction, and sale of unique homes, in addition to a variety of other architectural projects. El ideal democrtico de que el poder reside en la totalidad de los miembros de la sociedad, es decir, la horizontalidad de ese poder, es la idea predominante en el anteproyecto que ganara el concurso de diseo para los nuevos edificios que albergarn la sede de la Asamblea Legislativa.
The democratic ideal that power resides completely among members of a society, or horizontal power, is the main idea behind the proposal that will win a design contest for the new building that will be home to the Legislative Assembly.
he concept that the decisions of the countrys main power responds to the collective will of all inhabitants, the people, is no longer an abstraction now that it has become a horizontal building supported on the foundation of true democracy. That is how, by staying away from vertical design a concept that represents hierarchy and power of the few joining two Legislative Assembly buildings the Legislature and the Congress takes on new significance thanks to architecture. Progress, security, trust, honesty and connection to the Costa Rican people become more than adjectives in this design proposal. From an intellectual point of view, the first thing we did was to analyze the place, which is true heritage, said architect Javier Salinas, one of the projects directors. This area is one of the few remains of history because, unfortunately, our lack of culture has led to the demolition of buildings with historic value. So from the beginning, we were thinking about how to integrate the older part completely with the people, he added. Located in the heart of the capital in front of the National Park, an area that began to be consolidated as the countrys civic center a few years ago, each building has a clearly defined architectural design. Both buildings, for the Legislature and Congress, will rise up between Central Avenue and First Avenue and 15th and 19th Streets, on two central structures. That way, the old buildings that currently house the Legislative Assembly will be restored for other uses while maintaining their historical value and value as heritage. Likewise, the new buildings will be joined in the air by a large bridge, a symbol of the horizontal metaphor of democracy. The first building will house the plenary session hall, miniplenary session halls, administrative areas and the library, among other offices. The second will be home to the congressmen and womens offices, party leader offices, a caf and restaurant and technical areas.
l concepto de que las decisiones en el Primer Poder de la Repblica respondan a la voluntad colectiva de todos sus habitantes, es decir, del pueblo, dej de ser abstraccin para convertirse en una edificacin horizontal apoyada en los cimientos de la democracia real. De esta forma, al alejarse de la verticalidad concepto que representa la jerarqua y el poder de unos pocos y unir las dos edificaciones que completan el proyecto, la Asamblea Legislativa el Legislativo y el de los diputados adquiere un nuevo significado gracias a su arquitectura: progreso, seguridad, confianza, honestidad y conexin con el pueblo costarricense terminan siendo ms que adjetivos en esta propuesta. Desde el punto de vista intelectual, lo primero que hicimos fue analizar el lugar, que es absolutamente patrimonial, nos cuenta el arquitecto Javier Salinas, uno de los directores del proyecto. Esta zona es de los pocos vestigios histricos que nos quedan, porque nuestra falta de cultura ha propiciado, desgraciadamente, la demolicin de las obras de valor histrico. Por eso, se pens desde el principio en la parte patrimonial integrada completamente con el pueblo, aade. En el corazn de la capital, frente al Parque Nacional, zona que desde hace varios aos ha comenzado su consolidacin como centro cvico del pas, cada edificio tiene un programa arquitectnico claramente definido. El edificio legislativo por levantarse entre las avenidas Central y 1., y las calles 15 y 19 se apoya en el suelo mediante dos ncleos compactos. La otra edificacin, la de los diputados, se levantar entre las avenidas Central y 1., y las calles 11 y 19; al igual que el primero, se apoya sobre dos ncleos compactos. De tal forma, los edificios patrimoniales de la actual Asamblea Legislativa sern restaurados para cambiar de uso, pero mantendrn su valor histrico y patrimonial. Las nuevas edificaciones se unirn en las alturas mediante un gran puente, smbolo de la horizontalidad metafrica de la democracia. La primera de las edificaciones alberga el plenario, los miniplenarios, las reas administrativas y la biblioteca, entre otras dependencias. El segundo de ellos cobija los despachos de los diputados, las jefaturas de fraccin, la cafetera y restaurante, y las reas tcnicas.

Conceptualizamos un proyecto patrimonial para Costa Rica. La democracia es horizontal. Tuvimos mucha discusin intelectual acerca de lo que debera ser este proyecto y la responsabilidad y oportunidad que planteaba el proponer una edificacin en esta zona. Este es un edificio para Costa Rica y el mundo, Javier Salinas, arquitecto. We came up with a cultural project for Costa Rica. Democracy is horizontal. We had many intellectual discussions about what the building should be and the responsibility and opportunity we had to propose a building for this area. Hacer ciudad
Adems de las reas propiamente ligadas al quehacer legislativo, el diseo propone liberar espacios pblicos para el uso de la ciudadana. Este urbanismo solidario, como lo han nominado los arquitectos, se logra al elevar los edificios mediante ncleos estructurales que renen al mismo tiempo la circulacin vertical y las instalaciones. Esta solucin libera plazas urbanas que conectan a su vez y de forma natural con la Plaza de la Democracia y el Parque Nacional. Con ello, surge un corredor verde con espacios para estar al cobijo de especies arbreas nativas. Se crea, en una palabra: ciudad, una ciudad verde y democrtica. Se generaron plazas y se trat de alguna manera de apoyar lo que se ha comenzado a hacer en San Jos desde hace algunos aos: plazas pblicas, bulevares y vas peatonales, nos dice Salinas. Las ciudades buenas, con espacios buenos, hacen ciudadanos buenos. Las ciudades donde no hay espacios pblicos, donde no se tiene la oportunidad de expresarse, provocan violencia y gente mala. Adems, el componente verde est tambin presente en la propuesta. La vegetacin llega a las cubiertas de la edificacin y genera, por ende, jardines en altura que ayudan a absorber la fuerte radiacin de nuestra franja tropical. La orientacin de la construccin le apuesta al ahorro energtico. A NEW CITY
In addition to the areas directly linked to legislative duties, the design proposes creating public spaces for public use. This encompassing urbanism, as architects call it, allows them to elevate the buildings using structural centers that also join with vertical circulation and the installations themselves. This solution frees up urban plazas that naturally connect to Democracy Plaza and the National Park. This will create a green corridor with spaces covered by native tree species. In a word, it will create a city: a green and democratic city. We created plazas and tried to support what San Jose has been trying to do for some years: public plazas, boulevards, pedestrian walkways, said Salinas. Good cities, with good spaces, make good citizens. Cities that lack public spaces, where there is no place to express yourself, create violence and misfits. Green design is also part of the plan. Vegetation will cover the buildings and create raised gardens that will help absorb the strong tropical sunlight. Construction also promotes energy savings. Open to the north and south, with sunshades at specific points to minimize sunlight, the design also minimizes surfaces on the east and west, which are most exposed to the sun.

Las oficinas y reas administrativas se orientan al norte, y se apropian de la luz clida pero sin radiacin directa. Esta fachada mira al Parque Nacional. Por otro lado, la fachada sur recibe un tratamiento totalmente distinto: elementos naturales tamizan la entrada de luz. Permeables al viento y la luz, pero no a la lluvia, ambas fachadas han sido protegidas por una segunda piel de madera reciclada en el cerramiento del edificio de diputados y el legislativo. As, el sol produce un juego de luces y sombras que cambia a lo largo del da debido al curso natural que su rbita dibuja. Ese mismo elemento refuerza la estrategia pasiva de control de temperaturas al interior de los edificios; esta caracterstica lleva al mnimo cualquier necesidad del uso del aire acondicionado. Asimismo, aprovechando el clima tropical josefino, la cubierta capta las aguas pluviales para almacenarlas en tanques especiales en el stano de las edificaciones. Ese preciado lquido se utilizar para el riego de la vegetacin y la limpieza de los espacios pblicos y para recircular en los inodoros. Adems, por la propia conviccin de los arquitectos, se toma la decisin del empleo de materiales tradicionales y nativos: desde el bamb, un material de rpido crecimiento y fcil extraccin, hasta madera reciclada de PVC. Se procur la utilizacin de materiales que se han considerado, en otro momento, desecho. Por su parte, la estructura para los ncleos es ntegra de hormign armado, mientras el acero se utiliza para salvar la luz entre ambos edificios. Madera reciclada, vidrio y agua son los otros componentes que integran el proyecto. Offices and administrative areas face north, to the National Park, taking advantage of soft light without direct radiation. On the other side, the southern faade includes natural elements that filter light. Permeable to wind and light, but not to rain, both facades have been protected by a second skin of recycled wood in the building structure covering both legislative chambers. There, sunlight will create a play of light and shadows that will change during the day as the sun moves. This same structure will reinforce the passive temperature control strategy inside the buildings, making the use of air conditioning minimal. Likewise, the cover will take advantage of San Joses tropical climate and capture rainwater to store it in special tanks in the basement of the buildings. This precious liquid will be used for irrigation, cleaning public spaces and recycled for restrooms. In addition, the architects decided to use traditional and native materials. From bamboo, a material that is easy to grow and grows quickly, to PVC recycled wood, they will use materials that would otherwise have been thrown out. The central structures will be made of reinforced concrete, while steel will be used to save light between both buildings. Recycled wood, glass and water are also incorporated into the design plan.

El nuevo conjunto de la Asamblea supone un acercamiento entre el pueblo que cada cuatro aos elige al nuevo grupo de diputados. La configuracin de los espacios urbanos posibilitar a los ciudadanos manifestarse de manera segura y en reas ideadas para ese fin. Del mismo modo, la plaza sobre el plenario est diseada de tal modo que puedan celebrarse conferencias y actos al aire libre. Esta plaza, gracias a su gradero, permitir la interaccin ms espontnea y libre entre el pueblo y sus representantes. El pueblo estar encima de los diputados, no al revs. El edificio ser patrimonio, ser parte de la historia, una historia que debemos proteger. Si hemos llegado hasta aqu en un proceso tan duro, y no lo digo por el concurso, que tambin ha sido difcil, sino por todo el tiempo que se ha sacrificado para llegar a este punto (el diseo de la nueva Asamblea Legislativa), deberamos tener la madurez de decirles a todos que este edificio es para toda Costa Rica. En trminos personales, dganme lo que quieran, pero este edificio no es mo. Nosotros vamos a desaparecer, vamos a morir; tal vez alguien se acuerde de quin lo hizo, pero eso no es lo importante. Lo importante es la democracia costarricense, nos relata Salinas con conviccin. Una vez que se construya la Asamblea Legislativa, esto agarrar mucha fuerza. No solamente en el centro cvico; incrementar, adems, el desarrollo urbano y arquitectnico de la ciudad. Ojal participe ms gente desde el punto de vista intelectual, que es lo que el pas necesita. Esta ser la imagen que tendr Costa Rica hacia el mundo, emanada desde el primer poder de la Repblica. Lo ms importante es lograrlo entre todos. Una vez que se construya debera generarse una reaccin en cadena. Estamos en el momento histrico ms importante para la ciudad de las ltimas dcadas, concluye.

The new Legislative Assembly complex assumes a closer relationship with the people, who elect a new group of leaders every four years. The configuration of urban spaces makes it possible for citizens to be in a safe place designed for them. Likewise, the plaza above the plenary hall is designed so that outdoor conferences and events can be held. This plaza, thanks to its steps, will create a more spontaneous and outdoor interaction for the people and their representatives. People will be above their representatives, not the other way around. The building is going to be part of our heritage; itll be part of history: a history that we have to protect. Since its been so hard to get here, and I dont mean the contest, although that was also difficult, rather the time weve spent waiting for this (the design of the new Legislative Assembly building), we should be mature enough to tell everyone that this building is for all of Costa Rica. Personally, tell me what you want. But this building isnt mine; were going to go away, die, and maybe someone will remember who built it, but thats not the important part. Costa Ricas democracy is the important part, said Salinas with conviction. Once the new Legislative Assembly building is constructed, its going to gain strength. Not only in the civic center. Its also going to increase the citys urban and architectural development. Hopefully, more people will participate intellectually, which is what the country needs. Thats going to be the image that Costa Rica will have in the world, emanating from the countrys main power. The most important thing is to achieve that with everyones support. Once its built, it should create a chain reaction. We are facing the citys most historic moment in the last decades, he concluded.

Una de las experiencias ms maravillosas de caminar por una ciudad es descubrir los asentamientos de los inmigrantes chinos, quienes han tomado, a fuerza de su nmero y su milenaria cultura, posesin de un trozo urbano y lo han convertido en suyo.
n dicho popular refiere que quien cave un hueco bien profundo en la tierra llegar a China. Tal vez no se requiera tanta perseverancia e imaginacin, pues con solo atravesar una pagoda en medio de una ciudad podra darse un paseo por China, la China de ultramar, la formada fuera de sus fronteras. Mgicamente, el concreto gris y el modus vivendi occidental se difuminan para dar paso a puestos callejeros que se desbordan hacia vendedores que susurran Rolex o Coach al paso de los visitantes, o escaparates que ofrecen hierbas que lo curan todo o restaurantes de dim sum escondidos en stanos. Qu fantstica experiencia! Estos barrios fueron en un principio enclaves para los inmigrantes de este pas asitico, quienes llegaban a trabajar en la construccin de obras de infraestructura como ferrocarriles, carreteras o, como en Panam, el canal. Con el tiempo, han pasado a ser una suerte de motor urbano donde turistas y habitantes citadinos se acercan por igual a experimentar algo de esa cultura fascinante. Hoy, a propsito de la reciente inauguracin del barrio chino en nuestra capital, quisimos hacer un recorrido por aquellos que consideramos los diez ms representativos del mundo. Acompenos!
One of the most wonderful experiences in walking around a city is discovering its Chinatown, a neighborhood of Chinese immigrants who, because of their number and ancient culture, have taken hold of a piece of the city and made it their own.
rban legend states that if you dig a whole deep enough into the Earth, you will surface in China. Perhaps such perseverance and imagination are not necessary. By just walking under a pagoda in the middle of the city, you can visit China: the overseas China created outside of the countrys borders. Magically, gray cement and the Western modus vivendi blur together to create alleyway stands with vendors whispering Rolex or Coach as visitors walk by, or window displays offering herbs that cure everything, or dim sum restaurants hidden in basements. What a magical experience! These neighborhoods were at one time the main enclaves for Chinese immigrants, who arrived to work construction, such as railroads, highways, or in Panama, the Canal. With time, they have become a type of urban motor that tourists and urban dwellers alike visit to experience a culture that has always fascinated. Today, because of the recent inauguration of Chinatown in our capital, we wanted to take a spin through the 10 most representative Chinatowns in the world. Come along!

El barrio chino ms famoso del hemisferio occidental ocupa un rea de dos kilmetros cuadrados del territorio de Nueva York. La mayor parte de sus colonizadores lleg tras la abolicin de la Ley de Exclusin, en 1943. La inmigracin venida fundamentalmente de Hong Kong y Guandong la convirti en una ciudad dentro de otra, ubicada en el Bajo Manhattan y con ms de 200.000 habitantes. Las calles Moth (origen del barrio) y Canal (boca del metro y arteria que lo separa de Little Italy) absorben la mayor parte del colorido de fruteras, restaurantes y tiendas de baratijas, pastas y especias. Two square kilometers of New York City form part of the most famous Chinatown in the western hemisphere. Most of its initial inhabitants came after abolition of the Exclusion Act in 1943. Most came from Hong Kong and Guangdong and created this city within a city in Lower Manhattan, today home to more than 200,000 people. Moth Street (the origin of Chinatown) and Canal Street (entrance to the metro and street separating it from Little Italy) include most of the colored variety of fruit stands, dollar stores, pasta shops, spice shops, and of course, restaurants.

La Puerta del Milenio, un regalo de la Repblica Popular China, da la bienvenida al tercer Chinatown ms grande de Norteamrica. Muy cerca de la entrada, entre las calles Pender y Keefer, un camino que circula por Carall Street conduce hasta los jardines del doctor Sun Yat-Sen, los primeros con caractersticas chinas creados fuera de China. A la salida de este oasis, el Museo del Centro Cultural ofrece la oportunidad de conocer la evolucin de la comunidad china en Vancouver. La calle Pender exhibe un singular edificio con el rcord de ser el inmueble de oficinas ms angosto del mundo: Sam Kee Building, que mide un metro y medio en su parte ms estrecha. Millennium Gate, a gift from the Peoples Republic of China, welcomes you to the third largest Chinatown in North America. Close to the entrance, between Pender and Keefer Streets, a path along Carall Street takes you to the gardens of Dr. Sun Yat-Sen, the first traditional Chinese garden outside of China. At the exit, the Chinese Cultural Center Museum offers a chance to learn about the evolution of the Chinese community in Vancouver. Pender Street has one building with the record of being the narrowest office building in the world: the Sam Kee Building. At its widest point it measures one and a half meters across.

In the summer you can often find acrobats or theater groups, while winter hosts the Chinese New Year festivities.

Dentro del universo multicultural que hoy habita esta ciudad y puerto, se encuentra el barrio chino ms antiguo fuera de los territorios de China. El hervidero de actividad comienza al alba, tras cruzar por el sur la Puerta del Dragn desde la calle Bush, muy cerca de la Grant Avenue. Es ineludible la visita a la plaza Portsmouth, donde el tai-chi y los tradicionales juegos de mesa ocupan el lugar que vio izarse por primera vez la ensea de Estados Unidos. Ahora bien, la calle ms interesante es Stockton, porque se aleja del tpico recorrido turstico y se adentra en la vida ms autntica del barrio. Lejos del bullicio de los visitantes, est la Chinatown de Oakland, al otro lado de la baha de San Francisco. Within the multicultural world of this port city, we find the oldest Chinatown outside of China. The throng of activity begins at daybreak after crossing south at the Dragon Gate from Bush Street, close to Grant Avenue. With a visit to the Portsmouth Square, where the United States flag was hoisted for the first time, you can see tai-chi and traditional board games. But the most interesting place is Stockton Street because it is removed from the typical tourist path and gets into the neighborhoods more authentic life. Far from the tourist hustle is the Oakland Chinatown, on the other side of the San Francisco Bay.

Los primeros asentamientos chinos en la ciudad-estado de Singapur se establecieron en el siglo XIX en la zona de la baha cuyas aguas pegaban a la calle Telok. Es uno de los barrios chinos ms peculiares del mundo, ya que su interior alberga tres mezquitas y un templo hind, el santuario indio Sri Mariamman, en South Bridge Road. The first Chinese settlements in the city-state of Singapore were founded in the 19th century near the bay whose waters reached Telok Ayer Street, an area that was drained in 1887 to create more land. It is one of the most peculiar Chinatowns in the world since it is home to three mosques and a Hindu temple, the Sri Mariamman Indian sanctuary on South Bridge Road.

The large Les Olympiades towers mark the entrance to Chinatown in Paris, home to Europes largest Asian community. It is located on the left bank of the River Seine in the 13th District, between Ivry and Choise Avenues and Tolbiac Street. Among is attractions are the store belonging to the popular Tang brothers, offering a gastronomical extravaganza of duck; the Olympiades towers Buddhist temple whose stairs lead visitors to a sanctuary full of incense and soft music; and a park where tai-chi and Chinese checkers form part of the landscape.

An se utilizan bacos para calcular precios y dar vueltos. The Sam Ching Chinese drycleaners was the store that started the oldest of six Chinatowns in the southern part of Toronto. That Chinatown, founded in 1870, has more than 500 restaurants and is famous for its enameled porcelain tea sets, jade necklaces, pearls and latest electronic gadgets. They still use abacuses to calculate total prices and give you your change.

Apenas se le ha empezado a nombrar barrio chino. El recin inaugurado bulevar que corre desde la avenida 2 hasta la 14 marca el eje alrededor del cual se han ido agrupando, en forma desordenada pero presente, varios negocios relacionados con la gastronoma y la venta de productos de China. Unos ms antiguos que otros, los hay desde restaurantes hasta pulperas administradas por don Carlos. La peatonalizacin de esta calle forma parte del Plan Director Urbano de San Jos, que desde hace 20 aos defini ciertos ejes estratgicos para el desarrollo del centro. Originalmente no se iba a ubicar sobre el paseo de los Estudiantes (calle 9), sino sobre la calle 11, que es ms ancha. Esto permita ms intervencin con mobiliario urbano y vegetacin. Pero, tras consultrsele al Ministerio de Obras Pblicas y Transporte (MOPT) cul afectaba menos el flujo vehicular, este respondi que la calle 9, explica Roye lvarez, coordinador del Plan de Regeneracin Urbana de la Municipalidad de San Jos. Como San Jos y Pekn son ciudades hermanas, se logr obtener la mayor parte de los fondos para la construccin de este bulevar del gobierno chino. Sin embargo, segn lvarez, el nombre de barrio chino no responde a capricho, sino que oficializa lo existente. Si uno quiere comprar productos chinos especializados, va a esta zona, no solo sobre calle 9, sino tambin en los 16 bloques que la rodean. Por su parte, el alcalde de San Jos Johnny Araya afirma que, en ese sector, existen ms de 60 patentes de establecimientos comerciales pertenecientes a ciudadanos de la colonia china. En el paseo de los Estudiantes, especficamente en el tramo donde se est construyendo el eje peatonal, de 66 propiedades existentes 21 pertenecen a chinos. This area has just begun to be called Chinatown. The recent inauguration of the Boulevard running from 2nd Avenue to 14th Avenue, marks the center of a disorganized, but apparent area where several businesses related to Chinese food and products have set up shop. Some older than others, they include restaurants and corner shops run by don Carlos. As part of the San Jose Urban Plan, which began defining certain strategic areas of the city to promote urban development twenty years ago, this street was recently made pedestrian. Originally, it wasnt going to be on the Student Walkway (9th Street), rather on 11th Street, which was wider, so there could be more integration of urban movement and vegetation. But after asking the Ministry of Public Works and Transportation (MOPT) about which affected vehicular flow less, they responded 9th Street, explained Roye lvarez, Coordinator of the Urban Renewal Plan for the City of San Jose. Since San Jose and Peking are sister cities, most of the funds for the construction of the street came from the Chinese Government. However, according to Alvarez, the name of Chinatown was not just given on a whim, rather, it made what already existed official. If you want to buy specialized Chinese products, you go there, not just on 9th Street, but also to the 16 blocks that surround it. Mayor Johnny Araya confirmed that in the area more than 60 licenses for commercial spaces belonging to Chinatown residents have been awarded, and just on the Student Walkway alone, in the area where the City is building the pedestrian sidewalk, of the 66 existing properties, 21 belong to Chinese residents.

o es Nueva York, pero, al menos, calienta el sol de diciembre. En otro tiempo, Miami fue un destino exclusivamente turstico: bolsas de compras, flamencos rosas apostados en Ocean Drive y bebidas teidas en tonos pastel. El paraso de la cursilera, de los chicos dorados de la playa y del caf cubano. Hace alrededor de una dcada, Miami sum a todo an ms. El porvenir cultural de la ciudad no poda estar desligado de su poder comercial. Por eso, los dueos de Art Basel (Suiza), la ms prestigiosa feria de arte del mundo, entendieron que este era tambin el paraso para el mercado del arte. Entonces, desde hace once aos, abre al pblico en la primera semana de diciembre una edicin de Art Basel Miami Beach (ABMB), la feria de arte contemporneo ms notoria del hemisferio occidental. Si usted es famoso, quiere ser visto en diciembre y adems pretende que su nombre est relacionado a la sensibilidad de las grandes figuras del arte de su tiempo (es decir: un plus intelectual que algunas celebridades no tendrn), debe nicamente acercarse a Miami. Puff Daddy, Chelsea Handler de Chelsea Lately, Will Ferrell, Demi Moore, Kim Kardashian, Beyonc y hasta ese genio de la literatura callejera que es Jay Z se dejan ver por Miami en poca de arte. Si bien el centro de este vendaval de arte radica en la Art Basel Miami Beach, no debemos obviar que ms de una veintena de ferias usa el paraguas de esta para proyectarse en ese tiempo. Art Miami, Art Context, Nada Art Fair, Just Mad Mia, Scope, Art Asia, Art Pulse y Red Dot, entre tantas otras, se ven beneficiadas del aura, los coleccionistas y el ambiente festivo de ABMB. El 6 de diciembre de 2012 dio inicio la ltima edicin de Art Basel Miami Beach, que cont con la presencia de 257 galeras internacionales del ms alto nivel, que presentaron la obra de ms de 2.000 artistas, entre grandes maestros del arte del siglo XX y artistas emergentes con prcticas punteras en el circuito del arte contemporneo global. Alrededor del 50% de la feria estuvo compuesta por galeras de Estados Unidos y Latinoamrica. Esta particularidad nos permite afirmar que la calidad de la produccin artstica de este lado del mundo se ve ptimamente representada en el evento ms clebre de su tipo.

If you are famous, want to be seen in December and also want your name to be associated with the greatest artists of your time (in other words: an intellectual plus that some celebrities do not have), you just have to go to Miami. December 6, 2012, was the opening of the last Art Basel Miami Beach show, which had 257 renowned international galleries presenting pieces by more than 2,000 artists, including artist greats from the 20th century and emerging artists with cuttingedge pieces in the global contemporary art industry. Close to 50% of the show were galleries from the United States and Latin American, which confirmed that the quality of artistic production on this side of the world was optimally represented in the most celebrated event of its type.

La seccin de Art Galleries estuvo ubicada en el espacio central del Centro de Convenciones de Miami Beach y en ella se pudo accesar a 201 galeras entre las ms famosas del mundo. Clsicos como Marlborough Gallery, White Cube, Wallspace o Bernard Jacobson Gallery acompaaron la escena latinoamericana representada por la Kurimanzutto (Mxico), Luisa Strina (Brasil) y Ruth Benzacar (Argentina), entre otras. En cuanto a la presencia de maestros del arte latinoamericano, destaca la presencia de Luis Tomasello, Carlos Cruz Diez, Roberto Mata, Toms Snchez y Lygia Pape. Por otro lado, las secciones Art Positions y Art Nova se enfocaron en las prcticas contemporneas y se convirtieron, por ende, en centros de inters para los asistentes ms jvenes y los coleccionistas a la caza de nuevos talentos. La primera invita a cada galerista a presentar la obra de un artista en profundidad; en otras palabras, constituye una suerte de Artist Project, que permite un acercamiento ms completo a la obra de los elegidos. Art Nova tiene como fin exhibir obras realizadas en los ltimos tres aos; por esta razn, la seccin impone la novedad y rene curatorialmente una suerte de Top Ten de lo mejor de la prctica artstica contempornea, donde el performance, la instalacin y la obra ms interactiva se fortalecen.

The Art Galleries section was centrally located at the Miami Beach Convention Center. There, visitors could access 201 galleries, including some of the most famous in the world. Classics, such as Marlborough Gallery, White Cube, Wallspace or Bernard Jacobson Gallery, accompanied the Latin American scene, represented by Kurimanzutto (Mexico), Luisa Strina (Brazil), Ruth Benzacar (Argentina), among others. Latin American art masters included Luis Tomasello, Carlos Cruz Diez, Roberto Mata, Toms Snchez and Lygia Pape. The Art Positions and Art Nova sections focused on contemporary techniques and became a main point of interest for the youngest attendees and collectors scoping new talent. Art Positions invited each gallery to present the work of an artist in depth: a type of Artist Project that allowed attendees to have a more complete picture of the selected artists. Art Nova exhibited art made in the past three years; thus, it was the most innovative section and often had a type of Top Ten of the best in contemporary art, highlighting the most interactive performances, installations or works of art.

Art Kabinet form parte de la seccin de galeras y propuso pequeas exhibiciones curadas dentro de sus espacios concertados en la feria. Esta seccin tuvo como fuerte la exhibicin de importantes figuras del arte latinoamericano como el cono brasileo Helio Oiticica. Art Video y Art Public se tomaron la esfera pblica. Art Video cuenta con dos sedes, la primera dentro del mismo Centro de Convenciones de Miami Beach y la segunda, al aire libre, en el SoundScape Park. Aqu la serie de veladas al aire libre (Art Video Nights) present la obra de Julieta Aranda, Guy Ben-Ner, Daniel Arsham, Theaster Gates, Jesper Just, Mauricio Lupini, Rashaad Newsome, Ryan McGinley, Robin Rhode, Sam Samore, Adam Shecter y Hu Xiangqian. La nota especial fue la proyeccin de 12 horas de Bliss de Ragnar Kjartansson, en colaboracin con el MOCA North Miami y el New World Center. Art Public fue producida en conjunto con el Bass Museum. As convierte el Collins Park en un espacio de exhibicin de esculturas de gran tamao, videos, instalaciones y performances. Para el pblico nefito, es abrumadora esta invasin de arte. Sin la debida orientacin sobre lo que se busca o espera de esta fiesta de la produccin artstica universal, se corre el peligro de perder lo esencial, distrados en la cantidad de actividades colaterales, fiestas, presentaciones, performances y ferias aledaas. En cambio, el pblico especializado, ese que se resista a Miami como destino, ahora lo abraza, consume por igual los colores del arte y de los ccteles, se fotografa a la par de un Warhol, de una celebridad o de un artista latinoamericano que recin acaba de conocer y le dedica canciones a lo Roisin Murphy: Dear Miami. Art Kabinett was part of the gallery section and included miniexhibits curated within set spaces at the show. This section exhibited works from important Latin American artists, such as Brazilian icon, Helio Oiticica. Art Video and Art Public were exhibited in public spaces. Art Video had two areas, the first within the Miami Beach Convention Center and the second, outdoors at SoundScape Park. There, a series of outdoor showings (Art Video Nights) presented works by Julieta Aranda, Guy Ben-Ner, Daniel Arsham, Theaster Gates, Jesper Just, Mauricio Lupini, Rashaad Newsome, Ryan McGinley, Robin Rhode, Sam Samore, Adam Shecter and Hu Xiangqian. The highlight was the projection of 12 hours of Bliss by Ragnar Kjartansson in collaboration with the MOCA North Miami and the New World Center. Art Public was hosted together with the Bass Museum and converted Collins Park into an exhibit of large-scale sculptures, videos, installations and performances. For the novice attendee, this art invasion can be overwhelming. Without a proper orientation on what this show was all about in terms of universal artistic expression, you could run the risk of missing out on the essential by becoming distracted by the amount of collateral activities, parties, presentations, performances and neighboring shows. For those specialized attendees, those who resisted Miami as a destination, now embrace it. They consumed both the artistic colors and cocktails, took pictures next to a Warhol, celebrity or Latin American artist who they just met, and dedicated songs to Roisin Murphy: Dear Miami. We got it all, the empire ever falls, we got all control, untold power too, do what you want to do.

uin lo iba a imaginar. Primero, que el henequn, el oro verde que reverdeciera la economa yucateca como nunca antes un siglo atrs, se marchitara al cabo de unas pocas dcadas y dejara desperdigadas y en ruinas cientos de haciendas a lo largo de la geografa de esa vasta regin. Y, despus, que a la vuelta de un siglo, aquellas mismas haciendas la fraccin que sobrevivira al xido del tiempo se levantara para ser, de nuevo, orgullo de las planicies de la pennsula. Ese es el caso de Bacoc, cuyo casco fuera construido entre 1880 y 1910 para dedicarse a la produccin de la fibra de henequn, cuyos cultivos en toda la provincia cubran cientos de hectreas y eran exportados sin descanso a pases como Estados Unidos, Inglaterra y Francia. Tras ser abandonada a mediados del siglo XX, una historia que se repeta a lo largo de Yucatn tras la cada de las exportaciones henequeneras, la hacienda sera convertida en un modesto rancho rstico dedicado a la ganadera y apicultura. Su nuevo uso propici su acelerado deterioro. Cuando fue adquirida en 2006 por sus actuales propietarios, la casa principal estaba arruinada; conservaba una construccin antigua de mampostera de piedra sin techumbre. Donde otros vieron nada ms que el ruinoso despojo de un ayer dorado, ellos auguraron un futuro propiciatorio.

ho would have imagined it? First, henequen, the green gold that greened Yucatans economy like never before, would fade after a few decades, leaving behind hundreds of farms scattered in ruins throughout this vast region. Then, just a century later, those same farms the small number that had survived the test of time would become the pride of the peninsulas plains once more. This is Bacocs story. The main part of the farm was built between 1880 and 1910 to support the production of henequen fiber, whose crops covered hundreds of hectares in the province and were exported regularly to countries, like the United States, England and France. After being abandoned in the middle of the 20th century, a story that would be repeated throughout the Yucatan after henequen exports fell off, the uninhabited farm was converted into a modest rustic ranch for livestock and apiculture, use that accelerated its further decline. When the farm was acquired in 2006 by its current owners, the main home was in ruins, with old stonework and missing a roof. Where others saw nothing more than the ruins of days gone by, they saw a bright future.

Aquella adquisicin resultara en el renacer de Bacoc. Formalmente, la nueva volumetra, las dimensiones de sus espacios, las alturas de los techos, la proporcin de los vanos y la orientacin y disposicin de las ventanas se convertiran en una recreacin contempornea de la arquitectura de las antiguas haciendas henequeneras de Yucatn. A su vez, el conjunto reinterpretara tambin en lenguaje moderno la tipologa arquitectnica caracterstica. De esta manera, el vnculo pasara a ser testigo vivo y corazn de la nueva residencia de descanso. El concepto de diseo arquitectnico parte de conservar y consolidar la preexistencia histrica sin reciclarla como espacio construido, nos cuenta Salvador Reyes, arquitecto encargado de la nueva cara de Bacoc. Se propuso darle un tratamiento de objeto-espacio aislado, rodeado por jardines acuticos y la nueva construccin que la contiene. Funciona, adems, como vestbulo abierto de comunicacin a la nueva construccin y articula, a manera de bisagra, la lectura de conjunto entre lo nuevo y lo antiguo, nos revela. De esta forma, tras subir los peldaos de la escalinata de acceso, pareciera que cruzramos un umbral en el tiempo. Las ruinas de lo que fuera la casa principal, demarcadas por espejos de agua y jardines, son la puerta a otra dimensin. Tras ellas, el espacio se abre a la estancia y el comedor, dos sitios integrados en una planta libre cubierta con una losa masiva pero abiertos a la brisa; la clsica solucin que la arquitectura yucateca centenaria encontrara al inclemente calor de la pennsula. Estamos en el corazn de Bacoc, desde donde, prcticamente de manera simtrica, la nueva construccin se extiende de este a oeste.
A NEW SPLENDOR
Their purchase would result in Bacocs rebirth. Formally, the new volume and dimensions of its spaces, as well as its high ceilings, the size of its openings and the direction and number of its windows would make it a contemporary recreation of the architecture belonging to Yucatans former henequen farms. At the same time, the complex would also reinterpret its architectural characteristics in a modern way. As such, this link to the past would become a live witness and the heart of the new home. The architectural design concept attempts to conserve and consolidate the pre-existing history without recycling it as built space, said Salvador Reyes, the architect in charge of Bacocs new face. We tried to give it an isolated object/space treatment, surrounded by aquatic gardens and its new construction, articulating the relation between the new and the old, like a hinge, he said. After going up the entrance steps, it seems like we cross over a threshold of time. The ruins that were the main house, outlined by water pools and gardens are a door into another dimension. Behind them, the space opens up to the living and dining rooms, two areas integrated into one outdoor space covered with a massive slab, but open to the breeze. This was a classic solution in Yucatans architecture to deal with the peninsulas heat. We are in the heart of Bacoc, from which, almost symmetrically, the new construction extends from East to West.

La propuesta rescata y actualiza el uso de tcnicas tradicionales de acabado. Las fachadas se recubrieron con estuco a base de la resina del rbol endmico Chukum de color natural, nos explica Reyes. Los muro-placa de concreto son colados en sitio y utilizan como agregado la tierra roja Cancab proveniente del sur de Yucatn. Ambos con caractersticas nicas de identidad con el lugar, agrega. Al este, la cocina se llena de luz a travs de la ventana chaparra que recorre toda la longitud del mueble de cocina y la luz indirecta que baa una de sus paredes. A su lado, la sala de estar, con sus pisos de madera y sus tres puertas-ventana que se confinan dentro de sus gruesos muros para dejar pasar la brisa en cualquier momento, nos invita a regocijarnos con su amplitud y comodidad. Unos pasos ms all, donde apenas llegan los murmullos de otros aposentos, el estudio se convierte en el sitio perfecto para la contemplacin de los jardines que limitan a lo lejos con los aosos muros de la hacienda. A la izquierda, en el ala privada, tres dormitorios esperan al lado de un espacio que hace las veces de vestbulo. Amplios, llenos de luz, adornados con pisos de patrones ajedrezados y mobiliario de lneas sencillas, propios de los diseos que Reyes Ros + Larran han convertido en su sello, cada alcoba se descubre a la brisa de los jardines circundantes. Otra puerta, que abre al oeste, lleva a una terraza externa al lado de la piscina, reminiscencia de las pilas de abrevar de otras pocas. Es casi de noche y las luces de Bacoc se encienden an tmidas. A lo lejos, el sol ya comienza a despedirse con sus ltimos destellos mientras una solitaria palmera pareciera ser lo nico que rompe la simetra de la escena. Bacoc, como hace ms de un siglo, ha recuperado su altiva pero simple elegancia.
The design rescues and updates the use of traditional finishing techniques. The facades were recovered with resin stucco naturally dyed from a local Chukum tree, explained Reyes. The concrete walls and blocks are cast in place and use the Cancab red dirt from southern Yucatan. Both of these are unique characteristics that identify with the local area, he added. To the East, the kitchen fills with light through its dwarf window running the entire length of the kitchen counter, and indirect light bathes its walls. Next door, the living room, with its wooden floors and three window-doors fit within its thick walls to let a breeze through at any time, invites us to enjoy its amplitude and comfort. A few steps away, where you can barely hear whisperings from the bedrooms, the study becomes the perfect place to view the gardens that run to the aged farm walls in the distance. To the left, in the private wing, three bedrooms are found to the side of a space that acts as a hallway. The spaces are large, full of light, decorated with checkerboard patterned floors and furniture with simple lines, all part of Reyes Ros + Larrans signature designs; they are open to the breeze coming from the surrounding gardens. Another door that opens to the West, leads out to an outside terrace next to the pool, which is reminiscent of fountains of days gone by. At dusk, Bacocs lights timidly start to shine. In the distance, the sun has begun to sink below the horizon with its final rays shining, while a lone palm tree seems to be the only thing breaking the symmetry of the landscape. Bacoc, like more than a century ago, has recovered its proud but simple elegance.

Qu es lo mejor de tomar vino?, pregunto. Hacerlo acompaado de una buena comida, responde suavemente Alfonso Larran, quien a sus 75 aos sabe de lo que habla. No solamente porque desde joven qued atrapado por la llamada bebida de los dioses, sino, especialmente, porque hablamos con el presidente de una de las empresas vitivincolas ms grandes del mundo: Concha y Toro, con un segundo lugar en plantaciones al sumar unas 10.390 hectreas y exponente mximo de esta industria en Chile, pas que figura como uno de los principales productores de este elixir para la buena vida. Chile y Australia representan los denominados vinos del nuevo mundo, al ser los ms exitosos en exportaciones dirigidas al mercado masivo. En la actualidad, los vinos de Concha y Toro se consiguen en 135 pases, con un crecimiento importante en Asia. La travesa internacional de esta marca de vinos se dispar con la popularidad alcanzada por Casillero del Diablo, el nombre unido irremediablemente al pegadizo anuncio que contaba la leyenda de don Melchor de Concha y Toro, fundador de la empresa all por 1883, quien, para evitar el robo de sus botellas, divulg el rumor de que el diablo habitaba en su cava.

It is a main player in Chiles wine industry, a country that is one of the major producers of this elixir for good living. Chile, together with Australia, represent the so-called New World wines and are some of the most successful in wine exports to the mass market. Today, Concha y Toro is sold in 135 countries and has experienced major growth in Asia. The international journey of this brand of wines was jump-started with the popularity of its Casillero del Diablo. The name was inevitably linked to its catchy commercial, which told the legend of don Melchor de Concha y Toro, founder of the company in 1883 who, in order to avoid theft of his bottles, spread a rumor that the Devil lived in his wine cellar. His name baptized the companys first ultra premium wine: Don Melchor, a Cabernet Sauvignon with 22 awarded harvests. The brands 2003 harvest received 96 points from the 2006 edition of the specialized magazine, Wine Spectator.
Con su nombre fue bautizado el primer vino Ultra Premium de la firma: Don Melchor, un cabernet sauvignon que posee 22 cosechas premiadas; dentro de estas, destaca la de 2003, que obtuvo una calificacin de 96 puntos en la revista especializada Wine Spectator en su edicin de 2006. Don Melchor es un vino que se produce en el mejor terroir, ubicado en Puente Alto en el Valle del Maipo. No lo decimos solamente nosotros; hemos recibido reconocimiento mundial de los entendidos y de los consumidores, quienes son al final los compradores del vino, apunt Larran. En palabras del presidente de la firma, cada cosecha por ejemplo Cabernet, Carmenere, Syrah, Merlot y Malbec, entre los tintos, o Chardonnay y Sauvignon Blanc en los blancos resulta con caractersticas nicas. A eso se aade el gusto de cada persona. La mejor cosecha de Don Melchor fue 2003; sin embargo, yo no sera tan categrico, pues depende mucho del gusto. A m, en lo personal, la del 2005 me encanta y la del 2007 la considero espectacular.

Como tal, es un conocedor y coleccionista de vinos. En su cava personal resguarda unas 1.000 botellas, donde la ms vieja data de 1967. Ocup ese lugar luego de que un Casillero del Diablo de 1965 qued vaco. Estoy atacando los ms viejos, bromea. Tuve ms (botellas) de distintos vinos y pases, pero me las he ido tomando.
This jewel, stored in the best French oak barrels, was part of a vertical wine tasting in Costa Rica a few months ago, one of Central Americas oldest wine markets. The company has been sold in the market for more than four decades. The tasting included four harvests (2003, 2005, 2007 and 2008), and both collectors and wine-lovers participated in the event. Participants could buy a special case with a selection of the 1989, 1990, 2003, 2006, 2007 and 2008 harvests. For Larrain, the success of these activities depends not only on the wine, but also on finding and offering the best combination of foods to go along with them, or in terms of connoisseurs, the marriage. A great wine can improve great food, he added. He prefers to combine his favorite Don Melchor with different types of meat. The most complex the food, the better, because it is a very complex wine, he explained. En esta casa se establece una relacin ntima, cosida, directa con la topografa y con la vegetacin existente. En un paseo descendente atravesamos el paisaje interior, dejando atrs el mundo cotidiano, en un camino-paseo de transicin en el que se van articulando las diversas estancias, entre patios de agua y vegetacin, hasta llegar a la sala, que en un solo gesto se convierte en un gran porche, sin solucin de continuidad entre el interior y el exterior. Ingresamos, pues, en un mundo de contraste entre el artificio y la naturaleza, que se va percibiendo a medida que nuestra vista se adapta. Encontramos una atmosfera cambiante, con luz diferente, percibindose as las diversas cualidades del espacio. Espacios inesperados, aparentemente ocultos, que vamos descubriendo en el deambular interno. Cada dormitorio, dispuestos escalonadamente, tiene su propio mbito exterior, jardn, protegido e ntimo, y al mismo tiempo vinculado al exterior comn. Estos espacios marcan lmites, indican caminos y enmarcan vistas. La piscina acta como charnela entre el espacio construido y el jardn. Jardn protegido de las vistas externas y orientado a las vistas del oeste, con un horizonte visual que nos permite apreciar todo el valle del ro Virilla, despus Trcoles, hasta el mar, el golfo de Nicoya.

Los materiales de paredes, suelos y techos sern los elementos que contribuirn a crear una atmsfera interior singular, segn la pretensin inicial de envolver a sus habitantes y hacerlos partcipes de una experiencia de habitar nica. Bajo la marca Costa Rica Natural Design, se encuentra una compaa que se dedica al diseo, construccin y venta de casas singulares, as como al diseo de todo tipo de edificios, que uno a uno, en base a su formalizacin y materialidad, son nicos, diferentes, pero siempre con una misma filosofa y sensibilidad en el tratamiento de las herramientas bsicas del quehacer de la arquitectura. Como aplicacin concreta de lo anterior, encontramos en esta casa que la articulacin de los diversos espacios a travs de patios interiores y la elevacin de los mismos sobre el terreno permite una ventilacin natural cruzada que evita el uso de aire climatizado, contribuyendo conjuntamente con una total iluminacin indirecta con leds a una reduccin notable del consumo de energa. Todos los sanitarios de Corian han sido diseados y fabricados en Barcelona expresa y exclusivamente para esta casa. Se han instalado un inodoro de bajo consumo 3L automtico-invisible y 4 inodoros diseados por D.Chipperfield. Todas las mesas de granito negro absoluto se han construido en voladizo permitiendo as una mayor optimizacin en su uso. En definitiva se trata de un diseo que abarca la globalidad de los elementos que componen el paisaje domstico, consiguiendo, por tanto, la sublimacin del hecho cotidiano y diario.

between reflecting pools and vegetation, until one approaches the great room, which in only one gesture turns into a great porch with seamless continuity between the interior and the exterior. Every bedroom, arranged step by step, has its own private exterior space and garden, protected and intimate, and at the same time links to a common open pathway through the landscape. The swimming pool acts as hinge between the built space and the garden. The garden is protected from external views inward and the views of the west, with a visual horizon that allows us to appreciate the whole valley of the river Virilla, and beyond, the Trcoles, up to the sea. The materials of wall, floor and ceiling will be the elements that will help to create a singular interior atmosphere, enveloping its inhabitants and to make them participants of a unique living experience. Under the brand Costa Rica Natural Design emerges a company dedicated to the design, construction and sale of unique homes, as well as the design of all building types. Each design, being singular and based on formalization and materiality, is unique and different but always with the same philosophy and sensitivity in dealing with the basic tools of the work of architecture. As a specific application of the above, we find in this house the articulation of the various spaces through courtyards; the elevation of these spaces off the ground allowing natural cross ventilation that avoids the use of conditioned air and the contribution of indirect LED lighting through out resulting in a significant reduction in energy consumption. All the Corian sinks are from Barcelona and were designed and manufactured specifically and exclusively for this house. Installed is a low consumption (3L) automatic invisible toilet, and 4 toilets designed by D.Chipperfield. All the tables of Absolute Black granite have been made to cantilever allowing greater optimization of use. In short, this is a design that encompasses the totality of the elements of the domestic landscape, resulting in the sublimation of the daily rituals of life.
