Grade StudentsA = ALTS = Student(s)H = Home Room Teacher J = Japanese Teacher of EnglishGreetingH started by reviewing what we’d covered last year, in “good, great, sad, etc.” and“good morning, good evening, etc.” Wasn’t part of the plan, but was a good idea.I am sure we talked about it before hand and I didn’t understand, but as opposed togreeting all the kids at the same time, they came up to me one by one for a greeting. Was unnecessary, and wasted a lot of time, especially considering that as it washappening the other kids were completely disengaged. That said, I was very impressed by the variety of responses I got from the students, asin “I am great … etc.” definitely the best results I’ve seen before I’ve taught a classthe “How are you?” song.ColorsIntroduced the colors by asking students to volunteer with what colors they knew. Was shocked that at least some kids already knew all the colors we hoped to teach thatday, including brown and purple. Some special students even went further, listing off gold and purple, which were not part of the plan.Reviewing the pronunciation of the colors, speaking really loud or softly got the kidsto listen more. Next we played color memory, which really didn’t work well. Kids didn’t understandthe rules, and many times were not saying the colors in English at all of the cards theyturned over. When I watched an individual group it was fine, but there were too manygroups to do that with. How are you? SongPlanned on doing this before colors, but H forgot and she apologized. Were able to plow through the song in 7 minutes or so and sing it through a couple times with theCD. Class was going kinda wild at this point. Speaking the actions softly really gotthem to relax.Evaluation

No. They required too much autonomy from the students
o
Were the procedures appropriate for the students?
 No.
Student Response
o
Did all students achieve the aims intended?
Yes, they knew colors and sang the song through. Granted theyalready knew colors before class.
o
Did they have a positive attitude toward communicating?
Yes.
o
Did they all take an active part in communicative activities?
Yes.
Classroom Management
o
Was the atmosphere of the class positive?
Overall yes, but 2 students were completely disengaged. Itdidn’t distract the class so much, but it made it difficult for meas they were distracting. Better approach would have been totry and more directly engage them with eye contact or something similar.
o
Were instructions and questions clear?
 Not for memory.
o
Did the two teachers interact effectively?
Yes.
o
Were AV and other aids used effectively?
Yes.Thoughts
When things don’t go exactly as planned in class in terms of what we aredoing as teachers [not the effectiveness of the activities] I really struggle torecover.Best Practices
Card games like karut and memory in big classes where you can’t watch whatthe individual kids are doing have never really worked well for me. Next Time
Be conscious of students who are not interested in English and just have lotsof energy. Try to think of ways to better engage them.
