JUN21,200908:28A.M.  Ihavealwayslikedhobgoblins.WhenIwasyoungerandmakingmyfirst  foraysintotheworldofDungeonMastering,Ilatchedontotherace.I  thinkpartofthereasonIdidwasbecauseeveryonewasusingorcsand   goblinsandIwantedtousesomethingdifferent.AsIgrewolderandmy   campaignschanged,Istillusedhobgoblins.  Inmylongrunning

MortaktheSilentKnife   
Eversincehewasayounghobgoblin,Mortakknewhewasdifferent.He   hatedtakingorders,andhefeltthatheshouldonlylistentohimself.  Growingolderhecametotherealizationthatverylittleofthewealth   thatthetribelootedactuallystayedwiththetribe.Mostofitwenttothe   chieftain,andashegotricher,thetribegotpoorer.   Anagileandsneakyhobgoblin,Mortakwasalsogiftedwithakeen   intellect.Tiredofthelifeofpoverty,andriskinghislifeforsolittle,he   hatchedaplantoquietlystealfromhistribe.Atfirstnoonerealized    whatwasgoingon,sinceMortakwascarefultotakeonlysmallitems.   Witheachitemhestole,Mortakwantedmore,andbeforelongbecame   addictedtostealing.Onedayhisgreedgotthebetterofhimandledtoa   lifechange.  Developingthehabitofsneakingintothechieftain’stent,Mortakwould   helphimselftowhateverhewanted.OnedayMortakgotcarelessand    wasnotpayingattention,whenhewasdiscoveredbyoneofthe   lieutenants.BeforehecouldraisethealarmMortakkilledthelieutenant  andfled.Realizinghewasnowanoutlaw,andthatnotribewouldgive   himsanctuary,Mortakenjoyedhisoutlawstatusandthefreedomit   broughthim.Hehadbrokenfreeoftheshacklesoftribaltraditionand    vowedthathewouldonlyanswertohimself.Thiswaswhatledhimto   thehumancityOmatet.  Knowinghumansarewealthy,Mortakreasonedthatahumancitycould   makehimwealthyaswell.ItwaseasyforahobgoblinofMortaksskillto   sneakintoOmatetundetected,andhidefromtheguards.Onceinside,he   stayedtotheshadowsstealingwhatheneededtosurvive.Hisstealing   ledhimtobeginaccumulatingagreatdealofwealth,andthemorehe   hadthehappierhebecame.Afterlivinginthecityforayearathiefby   t  henameofOregorKalssspottedMortak.Suspiciousandextremely   curious,OregorshadowedMortakashebrokeintoajewelersshopand   successfullystoleanumberoflargegems.Seeinghowadeptthe   hobgoblinwasatthieving,OregorapproachedhimandtookMortak   underhiswing.  Thetwobecamepartnersincrime,andweresoonknownforbeing   extremelytalentedandlucky.Nojobwasimpossibleforthepair,and   theirdaringdeedsbecamelegend.ItwastheywhorobbedKalvinthe   Moneychanger,anditwastheywhostoletheMoonsEye(adiamond   rumoredtohavebeenaslargeasMortak’shead.)Slowlywordspread

throughoutOmatetsunderworldaboutthehobgoblin,andatfirstpeople   eitheravoidedhimortriedtokillhim.EveryattemptonMortakslife   metwithdisaster,andsoonnoonedaredtocrossswordswithhim.Then   oneday,Mortak’sandOregor’spartnershipcametoanend.   Asmuchanavidgamblerasanavidloser,Oregorneverseemedableto   holdontomoneyforverylong.Thegamblingdebtsbeganpilingup,and   asluckwouldhaveitallhismarkscamedue.Nothavingenoughmoney   topaythedebtsandknowingthelocationofMortakshorde,Oregor   tookeverythingandpaidhiswayoutofhistroubles.Thenextnight  Mortakdiscoveredthathismoneywasgone,andthathispartnerwas   missing,sohesearchedeveryalleyandbarlookingforOregor.  Findinghiminabrothel,anddrunkfromthreedaysofpartying,it  seemedthatOregortookmoremoneythenheneededandspenttherest  onbooze,drugsandwomen.WithoutbattinganeyeMortakkilled   Oregorwherehelaid,andthisiswhenMortakstroublesbegan.  Unknowntohim,itwasacrimeamongtheguildtokillafellowthief.By   killingOregor,Mortakbecameawantedoutlawoftheguild.The   punishmentforhiscrimewasdeath,andonceagainMortakwentinto   hiding.  Mortakhasmanagedtostayalivebyfoilingallattemptsonhislife.The   guildisgrowingincreasinglyembarrassedbynotbeingabletodealwith   aproblemmember.Mortakisseenasasignofweakness,andeveryday   helives,isanotherdaytheprestigeoftheguildfades.Mortak,onthe   otherhand,considersallofthisabothersomeinconvenience.The   hobgoblinhasbiggerplans—tooverthrowtheguildandreplaceitwith   hisownorganization.  Mortakisatalentedthiefandadeadlyfighterwhoreliesonthe   reputationofhisrace.Thoughhepretendstobestupidheisnot.Mortak   enjoysbeingunderestimatedandlullingopponentsintoafalsesenseof   security.Aprivateindividual,Mortakdoesnotsaymuch.Heisconfident  inhisabilities,aswellasbeingverygreedy.Thereisnothingthathe    wouldnotdoformoney.Mortakisloyaltonoonebuthimselfandthe   onlywaytogainhisloyaltyisbypayinghim.

TheguildisangrythatMortakisstillbreathing,andareembarrassedby   theirnumerousfailures.Realizingthatbiggergunsareneeded,theguild   setsupacoveroperationandcontactsthePCs.ThePCsaretoldthat  Mortakisaserialkillerandaworshiperofdarkanddepravedgods.They   spinataleofthehobgoblinkillingchildrenanddrinkingthebloodofhis   manyinnocentvictims.Promisedaverylargebounty,thePCsareasked   tofindtheblack-heartedhobgoblinandkillhim.Trackinghimthrough   thecitythePCsfinallyencounterhiminhislair.Muchtotheirsurprise   MortakisnotthedepravedkillerthePCswereledtobelievehewas.Do   theykillthehobgoblinordotheylistentohisoffer?   Mortakhasslowlybeenbuildingapowerbaseamongthecriminalsof   Omatet.Hisgoalistodestroythecurrentguildandreplaceitwithhis   own,andthePCsareapproachedtohelpMortakdestroythecurrent  guild.Iftheyagreetojoin,thePCsfindthemselvesfightingasecretwar   inthealleysandslumsofOmatet.Theculminationofwhichisafinal   battleintheheadquartersofthecurrentthievesguild.Therisksarehigh,   buttherewardsmorethanoutweighthedanger.
