DROBNEY 1
Amanda DrobneyEnglish12 June 2009Same story different name: Does it change it?Both “Mine” and “Little Things” are essentially the same story. Both were written byRaymond Carver. “Mind” was written in 1977. In 1981, Mr. Carver rewrote the story with someminor changes and renamed it “Little Things”. These small changes do make a differencethough. I will describe both how the stories are the same and also how they differ. It’s theseslight differences that make, in my opinion, the newer “Little Things” the better version of thisstory.I believe the genre for both stories would be considered gothic fiction. This is because theyeach have elements of both horror and romance. The romance is in the past however, as thecouples relationship is now coming to an end. Mr. Carver also describes the setting as the end of winter or early spring, with snow melting and the water running off to make everything dirty. Healso describes how it is both dark outside and inside, giving you the idea right from the first paragraph that the story will have a dark side to it.Most parts of the two stories are the same. “Mine” and “Little Things” both have the samecharacters, same settings, and same timeframe. The characters include a man and woman andtheir baby. Their relationship is coming to an end and the man is packing his belongings toleave. The argument that takes place is over who is going to take the baby.
