Overview
This Strategic Doing Pack is designed to guide discussions in the Strategic Doing Workshop.: Interagency Work Session for Planning andCoordination: ETA, EDA, and MEP June 12, 2009, 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM at Lansing Convention Center, Rooms 203-205It represents a set of exercises that can help you keep your discussions focused. These exercises are tied to Strategic Doing, a practiceof thinking and acting strategically in open networks.At the end of the workshop, you should have touched on all of the topics needed to compile a Strategic Action Plan. The facilitators forthis session include professionals all experienced with implementing Strategic Doing as a process to develop new collaborations quicklyand keep them on track.The Purdue Center for Regional Development and the Edward Lowe Foundation have supported the development of Strategic Doingas a new practice for developing and implementing strategy in open networks.

11:00-12:00: Scenarios for expanded collaborations (60 minutes)The agency representatives and participants will break into tables organizedaround topic areas. Each topic area will include two tables.Each table will continue discussions about innovative ways to assist to helpaffected communities, companies,
 
and workers. Each table will be asked tocomplete one scenario for expanded collaborations. (What could we dotogether?)

At this point, we will break into groups to explore how federalresources could be combined to address the challenges facingIndividuals, companies, and communities.
Our Purpose:
We want to Identify promising collaborationsin which federal resources can be “linked and leveraged” tocreate new investments in people, businesses and places.
Pick a topic area where you can contribute:
We havedivided the challenges into five topic areas. You should selectone topic and move to that table. If there is a topic area thatwe’ve missed, we can create another table.

There is no easy way to categorize all the challenges andopportunities facing auto communities. We have created fivelarge “buckets” to explore how federal resources can supportnew solutions.

explores the challenges of usingfederal resources to help companies caught in the downturn.
Expanding companies
looks at meeting the needs forsmaller high-growth companies that are emerging.
New career pathways
how federal resources can bettermeet the needs of displaced workers.
Renewable energy and green jobs
addresses howfederal resources the support these promising strategies forindividuals, companies and communities.
Transforming regions
looks at how federal resourcescan meet the physical planning challenges faced bycommunities that are shrinking.
