Glenn Garnett, Vice President. Editorial
January 12, 2012Mayor Nenshi,I am Vice-President, Editorial, for Sun Media Corporation. I am writing on behalf
of
SunMedia
in
response to your letter to Gordon Norrie
of
January 10,2012 concerning thearticle "All Means All" published
by
our company in the Sun newspapers and somestatements made on the same subject on Sun News Network. The issue referred to
in
the article is well known to people in Calgary and elsewhere -thetreatment
by
the City
of
Calgary
of
bylaw and other legal offences
by
Artur
Pawlowski-
a Christian pastor in Calgary. It has been reported on and has been the subject
of
publicdiscussion for a considerable period
of
time in some cases even before you were electedmayor
of
Calgary. Mr. Pawlowski and others have recently been commenting andcomplaining that the City
of
Calgary has undertaken a more rigorous approach tobreaches
of
the law by him than it did in relation to many
of
the same alleged offences
by
the Occupy Calgary protesters earlier in 2011. Reports
of
such criticisms
of
the actions
of
the City
of
Calgary
in
relation to
Mr.
Pawlowski have been published in Calgary andacross the country.,Ezra Levant
of
Sun Media has voiced similar concerns and,
in
doing so, has used hischaracteristic style, force and thrust that are well known to his readers and audiences. The essence
of
his energies is to raise matters
of
public interest and to encourage the furthering
of
public debate on such topics. We support his effort to engage discussion
of
all matters
of
public interest and we encourage you to respond to
him
as
you see fit. To be clear, his allegation that you are a "bigot" is a comment that any reasonablemember
of
the audience will understand to be addressed to the actions
of
youradministration in calling in the police to deal with the pastor for doing things that theOccupy Calgary protesters also did -but in relation to which the police were not soquickly engaged. This is a matter
of
municipal politics and lends itself to comments
by
you in the press as well as a rebuttal in the same places that
Mr.
Levant made hisremarks. The comment is one that anyone is entitled to make lawfully in the context
of
any such public debate over the conduct
of
a municipal government.The title
of
the column "All means
aU"
is a reference
to
a statement
by
you to the effectthat the laws apply equally to all persons -both in terms
of
the obligations under the lawsand the benefit derived from them. That statement is open for challenge at any time andin this case it is the set-up for a criticism
of
the actions
of
your administration that appearto fall short
of
the standard you espoused.Continued
