Unit 2 – Sub-Task 1 - Mind Mapping the Essential Skills
Key Framing Questions
How do I prepare for new educational and work experiences?How can mind mapping strategies help in the career planning process?
Description and Purpose
This task is designed to address the Unit Big Question, “How do I prepare for new learning andwork opportunities?” It also introduces students to the concept of mind mapping as a means of summarizing and organizing ideas and information. Finally, the task prepares students for theunit summative task, which involves designing a personal action plan using defined criteria.
Prior Knowledge and Skills
Proper computer use etiquette
Computer skills necessary to use specific software, such as Inspiration, to organize their data

Planning Notes and Materials List
Planning Notes:
Review and discuss the mechanics of concept mapping (see Beyond Monet) using a samplemind map and How to make a mind map/Laws of mind mapping sheet
Have students complete a paper-based mind map using their lives as the data
Guide students through a sample mind map using
 Inspiration
software
Communicate clear expectations for computer use (Peel Board Policy) to students and ensurethey each have computer access and logins
Debrief students on the utility of concept mapping in brainstorming session, “What are the benefits of concept mapping in learning new material?”
Have students complete a Learning Log entry based on the question, “What are the benefitsor uses of concept mapping in organizing ideas and information?”
Materials List
:
computers, student logins, LCD projector, and activity handouts, Inspiration or other software,access to student Learning Log
 
Assessment for Learning
Teacher will formatively assess student’s practice mind map
Formatively assess the classes readiness to use Inspirations based on participation duringteacher presentation and class discussion
Print, collect and catalogue completed mind maps in student’s portfolio for later evaluation
Learning log entry, “What are the benefits or uses of concept maps in organizing ideas andinformation?”
