MAKING TIME: FELT PRETTY WARM
Felting jerseys and making things out o themis certainly not new, but this is my take oncreating wearable items rom old woollens.I like the uncertainty o never being quite surehow jerseys are going to elt — how muchthey’ll shrink and how much stretch they’llhave let. I irst elt my jerseys, then see what Ican make rom them. Here are two quick andcosy projects that are perect or winter.
FELTING YOUR JERSEY
The best jerseys or elting are 100% wool ones. I you nd agorgeous wool blend jersey that you want to elt, try, but dependingon the blend it may or may not work. Look or a high percentage o wool, like 80%. Cotton and acrylic will not elt.
1.
Throw the jersey in a hot wash with detergent. You can elt morethan one jersey at once, just make sure the colours are the same.Top loading washing machines provide more agitation and eltbetter than ront loading washers. The combination o heat, detergent and agitation will cause the wool bres to knit togetherinto elt. I you plan to do a lot o elting in your washingmachine, put each jersey in a lingerie/mesh bag to keep the bitsthat come o rom causing your washing machine indigestion.
