The Myth,Magic, andScience of theRainbow
by Cedar Stevens
T
he Arc of the Rainbow has evercaptured the joy and imagination of thehuman spirit.
From the Greek Goddess Iris tothe Rainbow Serpent of the Aborigines of Australia to the Gay Pride Flag, the Rainbowhas been a symbol and tool of perception andthe gentle power of diversity and creativeenergy. In this essay I will attempt to link, explain, and expand upon the available magic, science and mythology of the Rainbow.
The colors of the Rainbow weredescribed as numbering seven by SirIsaac Newton, no doubt building from andexplicating his studies of classic naturalhistory.
Newton's color wheel is:Red,Orange, Yellow,Green,Blue,Indigo, andPurple. On more modern painter's color wheels, the Rainbow is usually divided into six colors,

omitting Indigo, which is a tertiary color. All of the other colors of Newton's Rainbow areprimary: Red, Yellow, and Blue, or secondary:Orange, Green, and Purple. Why is Indigoincluded in this system? Newton probably hadother, very good reasons to define theRainbow as a function of the favored magicalnumber of seven, and far be it from me toargue with Isaac Newton on that account.
I hereby propose that the NewtonianRainbow be relieved of the anomalousIndigo color, which does not even managea scientific definition
(expressed as a rangeof frequencies of vibrations of light) in anordinary college dictionary. I recommend thatwe preserve the magic number seven of theRainbow by including "Clear," as thecombination of all the colors. Allow me toexplain. The natural, undissected Rainbow is knownto us by two phenomena: the appearance of the Rainbow Arc in the Sky, and the division of white light by the art of the Prism. Both arereally expressions of the same basic reality of perception. Visible light, perceived and oftendescribed as white light, is a combination of particles of energy which express themselvesin a cyclical nature, known as waves. Atriangularly shaped transparent solid which isthe prism, or a drop of water, by the processof diffraction, has the power to separate thecolors hidden within white light, according tofrequency of the waves. This is then very easy

to measure experimentally, and todemonstrate with ordinary graphics.
It bears mentioning that white lightitself is just one small fraction of thekinds of electromagnetic energy thatcommunicates through the universe
.Others are radio waves, infrared radiation, etc. When we speak of the Rainbow, or white light,we are speaking of: that subset of electromagnetic radiation which is discernibleby the eyes of human beings. It is known thatother waves of energy are perceived by otherliving beings, such as magnet fields bypigeons, or ultraviolet colors by many kinds of insects. Other forms of this wave type of energy transformation are sensed by hearing,or by tactile sensation of vibrational motion. Inbetween the high frequency vibration of visuallight and the relatively low frequency of soundwaves, there is a lot of room for imagination. Therefore, the Rainbow colors are one subsetof energy that is especially applicable anduseful to humans. The other, lower octave of energy waveswell known to humans are known as soundwaves, and Sir Isaac Newton and others haveattempted to correlate the two phenomena.(graphic of Isaac's do re mi with colorscoming soon)
